There were some studies in the US over the past few years that clearly demonstrated that people just above the poverty line don't give a shit about people below it, and think that they somehow deserve to be there. That somehow it's their fault, and that "we got where we are through hard work". Similarly, middle-class people (in American terms) think that those people just above the poverty line also deserve to be there, and they couldn't give a shit about them either.
I suspect that the same thing is in effect here too. Working class people don't care about poor people. Poor people don't give a shit about even poorer people. That's how the mainstream media and governments going back to - how long? - have trained the masses to think.
That's why we have a fucking Tory government.
