In the beginning duke pulls over the car to retrieve the bag in trunk, when duke first arrives to the hotel and thinks hes surrounded by a fucking reptile zoo, the part where they are watching the movies with the cops and find out how mislead the cops are, the flashback to club matrix and the bathroom scene lickin the lsd off the sleeve hopefully scarring that man's life.

"I was right in the middle of a fucking reptile zoo, and somebody was giving booze to these goddamn things. Won't be long now before they tear us to shreds."

- Raoul Duke

The scene at the drug convention is classic, where they're sitting in the middle of a room full of cops, snorting bumps of cocaine, lol.

The bathroom scene where the guy licks LSD off Duke's sleeve is brilliant, i thought it was done so well.

The book is so much better than the movie tho, but reading while on psychadelics is less enjoyable.

Ya know I watched the movie about 50,000 fucking times........im sure some of you have too so my advice to you watch "Where the Buffalo Roam" ok cmon

exact same thing happened to me once. instead of watching the movie... i went to take a piss... but was sent off track when my other friend convinced me that HE was the one that had to piss, not me... to make a long story short... 3 of us wound up sitting on the stairs from the attic to the 2nd story trying to figure out why we were sitting on the stairs from the attic to the 2nd story. :)

...i eventually went to the bathroom. :)

that made me laugh :)

3/4 because the book is SO much better! As good a job as they did trying to capture the book's essence, it just can't be done.To anyone who hasn't read the book, do your self a favor and read it. Also read the Electric Koolaid Acid Test by Tom Wolfe. I'd love to see a movie made out of that!

i watched this movie many a time, but the first time i watched it on acid was insane. alone 4 in the mornign in my room laughing my ass off tripping my face off. then it became tradition for me and my buddies to watch it everytime on acid in my basement.

Be here now.

I wouldn't sit through this trash again for a hundred dollars.

Depp was great, as usual, and Del Toro, was excellent, as well, but there was no plot, and the "dialogue" could have been written by a drugged up 90-IQ sixteen year old.

Among the most overrated movies EVER, in my opinion.

Watching this now, i love it. I love Depp's narrated thought patterns, so trippy.

Does anyone know what those little cylinder shaped things are that they snap in half and snort?

I think it was Amyl Nitrite aka "poppers".

READ... THE... BOOK!!! The"plot"-- is insanity fueled by drugs and the American pioneer spirit. The movie can't touch the book.=D 8o

THE BOOK IS AMAZING, i second that.

the movie i'd give a 65/100 (rotten tomato style rating).

the book i'd give a 97/100

the dialogue comes almost directly from the book. a lot of sections are word for word. i thought the movie was great and did a really good job of capturing the spirit and vibe of thompson's sort of insane ambiance. i love a lot of his other work, one of my favorite books is "the great shark hunt" which collects a lot of his shorter work.

my question is... when is the damn "rum diaries" supposed to come out?

No offense, but I wouldn't think it'd be much a hit with the hip-hop crowd anyway. The movie doesn't do the book justice, however Deep and Del Toro make it worth watching. Thought it was worth buying the DVD though, and I'd like a directors cut too.

I loved this film, it inspired me to buy the book and other HST books, (this all happened about 1 year ago)
it actually eventually lead to me coming to this site, bluelight.
It also lead to me gaining interest in psychadelics.
Whoever said that "Media can't influence the use of drugs" didnt know what the hell they were talking about.

and for what reason is that? we don't get it cause we're not all groovy?

"music! music! put that tape on, man."

my fav part's probably when Duke's sweating balls at the hotel lobby or
when Gonzo's crazy paranoid in the elevator with the knife. Del Toro's
sick in that movie.
