^mos.def. plus cmon the scene in hte book where thompson is at the drive thru getting hte 25cent taco burgers and they ask the tellar for hte americn dream"uh could be in that building over there lots of things go on there"(that is paraphrased obv.)one of the few books tha ti casay was read in a mtter of 3 hours. that engaging

The first time I watched the movie I was sober. I enjoyed it, but it didn't make much since. Every time I have seen it after that (probablly hundreds of times) I have been fucked up on some kind of drug. And it was when I was watching it really stoned that suddenly the whole movie made perfect since and I could understand it and follow it just fine. Yup. It's a fab movie.

too weird to live, and too rare to die...

two thumbs up.. I always find myself watching pink floyd the wall right after it.. if you could figure out how to use the dvd player;)

I agree very very much with you on that. But I thought the guy that played Dr. Gonzo was better in that one. But it certainly was not the visual feast Fear and Loathing is. Still a good movie, but I guess I just love Hunter S. Thompson.

Did anyone catch the Conan O'Brien interview with Hunter Thompson a few months back? Johnny Depp lived with him for a while to be able to "be" Hunter Thompson for the movie (Which he was in every way. He gained a whole new respect from me once I saw the real Hunter Thompson. He captured him perfectly.) Anyhoo, Conan asked Hunter about him and he had to think about it and said "Ah yes, that is the guy that slept in my basement for a while on a cot next to the dynamite." Conan asked why he needed dynamite, and he responded very slowly as if Conan was just an idiot, "to make bombs". Ha, just too great.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vagas

I saw this movie recently and was highly amused. I was just wondering what other BLers thought of this comedy?

Peace,
Robert

As usual, ChemicalBeauty is right on track. His quote from the book was the best, and most relevant part (of the movie as well). These are words to live by, people. Read them, memorize them, take them to heart. I only wish my generation had half the balls Thompsons's did.

Adios,
Steve

i watched fear and loathing today... :) i'd read the book which was fantastic, and the movie... woooah... fucken awesome.
and spaced0ut, i don't know if it's meant to be a comedy or what... but i think you can't help but laugh at the extreme situations they find themselves in....hehe

So many people (in general) make it sound like fear and loathing is just a crazy fun acid trip of a movie. Personally i think it is one of the darkest movies i've seen, it's got some really fucked up nasty shit in it, and actually i don't think i'd enjoy it tripping. There is virtually no insight into the positive things that can be taken out of psychedelics (apart from the line about vegas being a bad place to trip on peyote, too many crazy energies).

But yeh they totally abuse every drug under the sun, include the more sacred ones, and thompsan seems to generalize his fucked up use to truths about the drug. He gives the impression that all you can take out of psychedelic use is a messy head and a faded sense of insight.

Anyway despite saying that i love so much about this movie, the filming, the ability to make such a fucked up concept alive, the dialouge!...

I've read the book too, but Hunter.S Thompson is just to much of a fucked up pesimist for me, who projects his own lost states onto the entire psychedelic community/ hippy era.

peace

Agreed. I watched this movie for the first time today and while it was funny I see the darker side as well...

I have never tried hallucinogens and this movie didn't exactly make me want to run out and try them...

I am of the opinion after reading other peoples posts in this thread that the main character is actually the author of the book which would make this a true story? If so then that is fucked what they did to the poor girl played by Christina Ricci...

Great movie though...

heh, i loved this. ^^^ yes, hunter s. thompson is the man - go read his book. i'm sure it's embellished somewhat, but the guy *is* pretty fucking crazy, so i'm sure much of it is true.

i really enjoyed the way gilliam filmed this. i too have never done acid (though i've done some very mild other hallucinogens), but i imagine that you couldn't get much closer to the experience, filmically, than this.

the performances of depp and del toro are brilliant as usual, and the road trip aspect made for some great entertainment. as you'd imagine, the dialogue (pretty much *straight* from the book) is fantastic.

i really love this :D

(has anyone got the criterion dvd btw? the commentary looks great, but it's *very* expensive and i'm poor :)).

I will definately read the book, and any others he has now that I know to look out for them... Although I'm poor as well at the moment so it will have to wait :(

look at my posting about Breakfast with Hunter - im downloading it now a documentary featuring benicio del toro and johnny depp and a few other actors and people that have become friends with Hunter...

looks awesome!!

Yes I do, and I must say that after near 100 viewings in my first year and a half of college, I thought I was done with this movie. The gilliam commentary track, however, revitalized it for me. He is really a fantastic director.
