^^^ Yeah fingers crossed.

I don't mean to doubt him but Benicio will have to do an extraordinary job to even compare with Terry Gilliam's creative talent.

well, the book isn't really the same as fear and loathing anyway. I think rum diaries calls for a straighter narrative, but more attention paid to the writing and storytelling, rather than the lush visuals.

I think you're bound to be disappointed if you compare the two films closely... Del Toro is a first time director (as far as I know) and there's no way in hell he will be able to "match" a veteran like gilliam on any level.

Just look at it as another HST adaptation and don't expect anything like the visual feast that was Fear and Loathing.

Actually Rum Diary will be Del Toro's second movie. His directoral debut being Submission in 1995. Your right though if you try to compare the two films(or books for that matter) you will be disappointed, there just totally different but The Rum Diary is a GREAT book one of my favorites actually.

As far as Del Toro not being able to match Gilliam I dont know, Gilliam hasn't really impressed me. Fear and Loathing was probably one of the easiest books to adapt and having talent like Depp and Del Toro doesn't hurt either.

Personally, I think Del Toro will do a great job directing. The Rum Diary is set in Puerto Rico in the 50's, and I think Benicio being from PR, will be able to convey its atmoshere really well. And, with Johnny signed on as Kemp(Thompson) Del Toro as his nutty sidekick Sala and Nick Nolte as the lunatic Lotterman how bad could it be?

As I was writing this I heard a rumor that Del Toro was backing out of directing but I couldnt find anything to confirm it so lets just hope its not true.

Yeah, "Fear and Loathing..." is a fucking kick ass movie. One of my very favorites along with "Blow" and "Another Day in Paradise."

My favorite part of the movie is where they first check into the hotel when they're tripping acid and the carpet designs are crawling up peoples legs and shit.

Anyone and everyone who loves acid... will love this movie. I think it's funny when he sees birds that aren't really there... because it reminds me of myself... and once again I'll state that Johnny depp is my favorite actor!!

I love the part where they are driving down the road and he opens the coke and the wind blows it away!!! It just strikes me as something that would happen during my old drug enduced frenzies!

"I knew you were a fucking narcotics agent!" :)

Read the book and it was great... There is a few things I would have liked to have seen in the movie that weren't but it is definately one of the best book to film conversions I have seen...

Johhnie Depp is the man...

"Godamnit man, I'm a doctor of journalism"

(Yeah I was quoting from memory, not from the script, so I'm sure I'm a few words off :))

3 stars. It was about half an too long. By the end of it I was starting to feel pissed off about these two mash-heads. But it has some really great moments though.

yeah but you conveniently forgot to add one of the best quotes of the movie that occurred in that scene: "did you see what GOD just did to us, man??" ;)

i didn't like this movie when i first saw it because i had never tripped and couldn't really relate to all of it. after i tripped a couple times, it became the movie of choice while getting high in college. i've watched it a few times in the past 5 years and it just keeps getting darker and darker. the really funny parts still are funny, but i'm generally bored with the movie now.

anybody recognize the "hitchhiker"?: toby macguire, spiderman. i thought it was joaqin phoenix the first several times i saw it, but now it definitely is not him.

So many people (in general) make it sound like fear and loathing is just a crazy fun acid trip of a movie. Personally i think it is one of the darkest movies i've seen, it's got some really fucked up nasty shit in it, and actually i don't think i'd enjoy it tripping. There is virtually no insight into the positive things that can be taken out of psychedelics (apart from the line about vegas being a bad place to trip on peyote, too many crazy energies).

But yeh they totally abuse every drug under the sun, include the more sacred ones, and thompsan seems to generalize his fucked up use to truths about the drug. He gives the impression that all you can take out of psychedelic use is a messy head and a faded sense of insight.

Anyway despite saying that i love so much about this movie, the filming, the ability to make such a fucked up concept alive, the dialouge!...

I've read the book too, but Hunter.S Thompson is just to much of a fucked up pesimist for me, who projects his own lost states onto the entire psychedelic community/ hippy era.

peace

i could not agree more

Have you even read the book???
Yes i did read it.
No doubt that is where it all came from, but i prefer the movie by far. The reason is because I never experienced the US in the early 70's. The book takes for granted that the reader is of the era, when the movie has it spelt out in the beautiful backgrounds and costume design.

Hunter S. Thompson/Fear and loathing in las vegas

I recentlly watched fear and loathing in las vegas, i was just looking into the movie as i was curious about it. I was checking out ether on the internet and i came across Hunter S. Thompson, i also found out that the guy in the movie was supposed to represent him. So was this movie based on a true story or what?

Don't think so. By the sounds of all the drugs though, my best guess is, (sure a reporter and his attourney missioned together) but the drugs are exhagerated.

"Duke and Gonzo are ostensibly headed to Las Vegas to cover the Mint 4000 off-road race, as did Thompson and his real-life associate Oscar Zeta Acosta, for whom Duke and Gonzo serve as barely veiled alter egos. Thompson initially planned to publish his unedited journal of the trip, but fictionalized his account following Faulkner's advice that fiction could get closer to the truth of a situation than journalism."
