The Alcohol thread...

^^ Most definitely, that was nearly always my pattern, although recently am getting better. If I have any beer in the house it will be gone before the day is through. This often led to stupid situations where you would have what was only meant as a couple of quite drinks with friends on say a Sunday afternoon, and it turns into a binge.... completely unnecessary.

Socially I still can't limit myself very well which means 7-10 beers in a session (fortunately I only do this only once every 2 weeks), but can now appreciate having just a couple of brews (and leave it at that) on my own to relax. I also find if you buy really good quality beer, then you're a lot less likely to smash it down all at once.

Beautiful afternoon = a four-pack of Hoegaarden (or maybe 2x500mL Schofferhoffer) while watching some good documentaries on YouTube :D

^^ Oh sorry I missed your post before that, yeah it's only if you do it for years on end.

That's very strange about you having trouble sleeping though. Personally I sleep incredibly well after a few beers.

Maybe check this out: http://pubs.niaaa.nih.gov/publications/arh25-2/101-109.htm

"... studies found that in nonalcoholics who occasionally use alcohol, both high and low doses of alcohol initially improve sleep, although high alcohol doses can result in sleep disturbances during the second half of the nocturnal sleep period. Furthermore, people can rapidly develop tolerance to the sedative effects of alcohol. Researchers have investigated the interactive effects of alcohol with other determinants of daytime sleepiness...."

Thanks for that pollued_mind, great info!

But anyone know why Im getting trouble sleeping because of my daily drinkin? Can't really understand it and it's pretty annoying.

I have trouble sleeping too if I don't go to bed while I'm still plastered, if I wait until it wears off a little bit then I can pretty well forget sleeping. I used to be a heavy drinker from 15-20 then took a pretty much complete break from 20-25, and for the past 2 years I have been drinking pretty regularly, not daily, but over the last 6 months or so I have begun drinking daily again. Averaging 6 stubbies at night and a couple of long necks over the course of the day. The sleeping issue has only become apparent recently since I have been drinking daily. No clue. :\

Ash. <3

Same here, about the sleep also first recently or the last couple of weeks have been like this. I just woke up (I do that all the time), guess it whens the alcohol has left my blood? Dno, but can't sleep now,and only have got a few fuckin hours :|

So I feel ya Ashley!:)

I find alcohol really disturbs my sleep too. It makes me restless, as if I can't fall into a deep enough sleep. I also tend to wake up early feeling quite anxious and restless and not be able to fall back asleep. I read something somewhere about this, and this is non-scientific as fuck, but it was something about a stimulating hormone or neurotransmitter alcohol inhibits, and your body over compensates for that by producing more, so when the alcohol wears off you have more than you need of this chemical that makes you feel anxious. I'm curious now, I might do some reesearch on that ;)

Same...this is the reason I only buy 6 packs, and not slabs. If I buy a slab, I'll drink it all during the one day.

I don't find that about sleeping after getting drunk, but a friend used to say he used to find it hard to sleep after getting stoned, which I couldn't relate to either.

The other part about having beer at home I can relate to tho, if I have it in the fridge I'll drink it, but not to the extent of a whole case, maybe a half a case at most. Sometimes I'll just buy a couple of long necks after I have been out somewhere and had a few schooners. Having a full recycle bin of bottles out the front each fortnight sux, so sometimes I go a week or 10 days or so with no alcohol, I just drink water and juice and sometimes soft drink.

if its in the fridge il drink it

i sleep easy if im drunk so long as im hydrated. the only time i get up during the night is to leak or drink h20.

always try to scull a coupley glasses of h20 before bed.

is it just me or does red wine give the worst hangovers?

it's not just you laugh, it really can give some pretty bad hangovers, but I almost never drink it anymore.

i dont keep any alcohol in the house anymore either. i just started doing this recently. like some of you have said, i'll be at a lunch or something, have 3-4 brews, then kick on too hard when i get home. or i'll intend to just have a couple quiet ones at home and just keep going. i have such little self control when wrt stopping myself drinking while drinking.

alcohol wasnt feeling good anymore. its one of my least favorite drugs, but given its high accessibility and social acceptance, and the inaccessibility and social acceptance of the drugs i do like, i found myself rarely going 10+ days without a drink. this is another reason to not keep alcohol in the house.

so far it is working. if i have a quiet weekend with no party's or anything like that on, i easily go 2+ weaks without a drink. my tolerance has dropped and am experiencing a more enjoyable intoxication. binge drinking ftw.

I think it might increase cortisol levels.

Alcohol abuse has definitely been linked to fatigue and disrupted sleeping patterns. Might take a while for them to return to usual apparently. I find myself regularly waking up in the middle of the night if I drink too much.

alcohol is still one of my favorite drugs, atleast in the top 3... although I prefer the whole 'first beer buzz' apposed to the sloppy drunk.. bit hard to maintain when you got a tolerance although mine has been pretty low recently

drinking probably 3 days a week at the most, as of late..

I'm pretty sure the Northern Territory takes the cake for drinking stats. They probably don't have the same kind of "entertainment areas" that we have down south though. I'm not sure if a night out in the long grass counts. No Brisbane in that study either?

Agreed this is not news. I'm sure just as much harm if not more is done by the people that don't go to Northbridge.

booze & absinthe

I dont know if pricing discussion is legal? But where I live in Reservoir, there is a bottle shop run by a nice vietnamese family that has an entire shelf of random locally produced brands of 700ml spirits, ranging from $20-25 per bottle for rum, bourbon, scotch, several different vodkas in that price range, etc.
They have this one Vodka with a russian sounding name starting with V that is $22 which I prefer to Vodka O.

On another note, I am about to use the above cheap vodka to then distill further making stronger (~60%) using a home made double boiler and condensator.
So that then I can suspend (1) absinthe extract and (2) homemade wormwood extract, both purchased online from a well known australian shamanic website.
I will post my results if anybody is interested?

I am also thinking of adding another step in the above process, and making a charcoal filter to further refine and purify my higher strength vodka (since I am buying $22 bottle shit) before combining as a solution with my extracts to make the "absinthe".

Someone must have done this before? Any tips?

Hopefully if i get the amount of Thujone right ill be meeting the green fairy this weekend, Woo!

(( Can somebody confirm that this is legal to d in Victoria, I assume it is since you can buy absinthe containing thujone in victoria?))

Cheers all xoxo

This is an area I'm interested in and would love to hear your results when you finish.

Just wondering when you say you're going to 'suspend' the extracts, what you mean by that?

Also what does the 'absinthe extract' contain? Is it just an extract of the botanicals generally used in absinthe production? And you're using extra wormwood to increase thujone levels? What kind of thujone content are you aiming for?

RE thujone: There is thujone in store absinthe but there are food & health standards about how much thujone allowed. However, I do not think this applies to personal use.

RE distillation: Distillation of alcohol without a licence and owning a still for the distillation of alcohol without a licence are both illegal even for personal use.

Hey thanks for the info friend.

Yes i purchased 10mls of an australian sourced absinthe concentrate "la Fée" which contains the other usual botanicals found in absinthe. I used about half of the 10ml bottle. I am not totally sure of all ingredients but it says "A delicious blend of essential oils needed to make authentic Absinthe. Includes wormwood, fennel, hyssop and about a dozen other oils." Then i also purchased a further 60gm wormwood chips which were ground up, and then extracted and this was also put into the vodka along with about half of the green concentrate.

I had to use 60-70% alc so that everything would be completely suspended within the vodka solution.
Apparently if I used stock standard 35% vodka then there would have been visible green droplets of the extracts suspended throughout the solution, so I needed to increase the Alc % to get everything completely dissolved. does that make sense?

I have not tested it properly yet, I have a litre stored away for a rainy day and ~100ml excess that i will drink tonight!
It ended up being a fairly expensive exercise, and for most other people it would be cheaper and better to buy some govt regulated absinthe from their local store (but mine will be way stronger). 3 $22 700ml bottles of vodka were used, The 10 ml essential oils was $12, and the 60g wormwood was $18. Total spent for 1L hobo-sinthe $96
