I do wonder when our government will think long and hard about drugs before making decisions, not just reacting as they always do.
Synthetics; Effects and Outcomes
As an addiction specialist I was particularly intrigued by these new synthetics such as the JWH line and its other relatives.
I have been smoking cannabis now for 12 years and I can say I love the stuff.
Yesterday I purchased a product which I wont name but its title is the same as what a burnt piece of wood, etc, leaves behind after it is burnt.
I did not use a water pipe instead I rolled a joint mixed with white ox tobacco (the best of course). I used approximately 1 cones worth which is probably equivelent to 0.2 grams.
Firstly I must say I loved the taste of this stuff especially mixed with ox.
After 3 draws of the ciggarette I immediately felt a high. Its onset was much quicker than its natural couterpart.
Now I have heard reports that this "herbal insence" is laced with products such as DMT, Tryptamines and even ketamine. I can easily say that the product I sampled did not contain any of these.
Once I reached full blood concentration I experienced a huge sense of euphoria along with pleasant hallucinatory effects. I felt like I was as light as a feather and found it extremely easy to fall into a meditative state (I recommend this product for any meditation practices).
I walked to the mirror and inspected my eyes and found that they were as red as smoking 2 cones of good Cannabis Indica X.
The effects lasted a good 40 minutes which makes me see why people may think it is DMT or Salvia. It is not.
This product is brilliant and I will be stock piling before the government gets their grubby hands on it and bans it.
A warning though. If you have never taken any hallucinogens or smoked THC make sure you are in good company as this product is intense and may cause paranoia or panic. Have a Xanax or Valium on hand just in case.

I bought some from a sex shop in fyshwick. Smoked in a joint. Felt pretty good / stoned for about 20 minutes then the it just completely wore off. Definitely prefer the real stuff.

Police target 'synthetic drugs' in Mount Isa
Queensland police say the north-western mining city of Mount Isa has become the state's synthetic drug capital.
Synthetic drugs are chemical compounds designed to mimic the effect of substances like amphetamines and cannabis.
Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Brad Phelps says synthetic drugs are not picked up by routine testing in the mining sector.
"We have a number of young men involved in the mining industry where they are frequently undergoing drug testing, and they also have a fairly large disposable income," he said.
"The region has probably had more seizures than any other area in the state of Queensland."

Sophie, I think that state law is also federal law in this regard, so, in theory, none of us can smoke weed, ummm, isnt lake geneva in the US?

The "legal high" story in Australia is fascinating. The synthetic "weeds" have been around for years, and then in 2010/11 really took off by demand created in response to media stories about the July 2011 ban. Since then the "industry" has exploded. And in recent months we have seen "investors" move into the manufacture and distribution.
Is this another lesson about prohibition? While we (rightly) should have concerns about what goes into these products, other countries like the US move towards increasingly " legalising" mj.
I think the legal high is here to stay. While some Aust governments talk about blanket bans on the chemicals used, there are many other legal highs that do not mimick the mj affect. There is no way in the Internet age, that the governments will catch up.
So what do we do?
I would love to see good independent research.
No I do not like synthetics personally.

If you get the right brand and product then it is a lot stronger than natural Cannabis but has far more side effects and a horrible addiction potential if abused. Head over to the incense forums as we are not allowed to advertise here. They have reviews and the like on all the products. Be careful over there though as a lot of the forum members are the definition of loose cannons. Please read up on the side effects and addiction potential also as some of the products when abused can be devastating.
My honest advice is to find a better source for natural Cannabis and never go back to the incense. If you are thinking of importing the pure powder then I'd advise against it as it being well watched by customs.

I'm gonna spend today reading up about side effects. I'm in the UK so getting powder is possible.
I've heard and read horror stories about people getting totally fucked up(in a bad way) on the incense stuff.
I'm paying like £20=aus$30 a day on average weed.

I didn't realise that you are in the UK. There are incense forums over there though. You will find them on Google.
Be really careful with the powder. When your tolerance builds you just add more powder and make your mix more potent. Some people ended up just smoking the pure powder when it was legal here. If you end up doing that be careful not to let anyone else use your cone as the residual gutterhash in the cone has been known to make people freakout. The gutterhash from the stem is very active also. If can stomach that then you can get very stoned again from the gutters.

I think this shit will be with us for a while most of the new generation synthetics are totally new chemicals, forget AKB48 etc now we are probably being sold herbal material laced with 5F-PB22, QUPIC, SDB-001 or some other substance previously unknown or unreported in any scientific or patent literature according to wiki. Nice state of affairs.

SYNTHETIC cannabis and other ‘‘fake’’ drugs will be banned under fair trading laws, police given simplified powers to seize them and retailers fined up to $220,000 if a NSW parliamentary committee’s recommendations are adopted.
The committee, which focused on the Hunter as an ‘‘epicentre’’ of a crisis in the dangerous yet legal drugs, handed its recommendations to the government yesterday.
Committee chairman and Liberal MP Dominic Perrottet said their status as so called ‘‘legal highs’’ and availability even in ‘‘sports stores’’ had lead people to believe that the drugs were safe – ‘‘when that’s proven not to be the case’’.
The drugs mimic the effects of prohibited drugs such as cannabis and cocaine, but are chemically different enough to be technically legal, and are sold in tobacconists, service stations, other stores and over the internet.
Different chemical variants are developed by manufacturers to get around prohibitions.
Fellow committee member Cessnock MP Clayton Barr said the measures would send a ‘‘powerful message’’ to users who think they are taking a legal approach to recreational drug use, in particular miners wanting to avoid detection from traditional workplace tests.
And they would make retailers more accountable.
It was stories in the Newcastle Herald over the last two years that alerted the parliamentary committee to the rapid rise in the use of synthetic drugs, and their danger to health, including psychosis and addiction.
Just this week the Herald reported a man armed with a large knife stormed a Muswellbrook store and demanded staff fill a bag with synthetic cannabis.
The committee’s 13 recommendations could drive the sale of the drugs underground ‘‘but so what’’, Mr Pettottet said.
‘‘You’ve got people who would otherwise never embark on a path of drug abuse doing so because they think that the drugs are safe,’’ he said.
Under the recommendations, the Minister for Fair Trading Anthony Roberts would issue interim bans, potentially for up to six months, on synthetic drug products sold in stores.
Provisions for police to seize synthetic drugs they suspect are harmful would be simplified, and retailers of the banned products could be fined up to $220,000; and corporations $1.1million.
The committee, which also included Wallsend MP Sonia Hornery, was told the long-term health impacts of the ‘‘new and largely untested’’ drugs were not known.
But police reported encountering people with adverse reactions to synthetic cannabis that included psychological episodes.
Incidents have included the death of truck driver Glenn Punch, who died last year after he went on a naked psychotic rampage at Tomago after suffering the effects of injecting synthetic cocaine.
The committee recommended NSW incorporate into its drug control laws a national schedule of medicines and poisons set by the Therapeutic Goods Administration.
That would prohibit broad categories of synthetic substances, in an effort to counter the practice of manufacturers tweaking the composition of products to circumvent existing bans on specific chemical compounds.
The government should also introduce a system where the Minister of Fair Trading issued interim bans of up to 90 days on the products under laws to protect consumers.
NSW should write to the federal government seeking amendments to federal laws to permit it to impose six-month interim bans that would enable proper testing of drug products.
Permanent bans on products found to have dangerous compounds could also be requested.
The inquiry heard the current rules for police to seize possibly illegal synthetic drugs from retailers were too technical to be clearly understood.
Provisions should be simplified and training given to police to ensure they felt confident about which drugs could be seized.
Retailers would be educated on the make-up of drugs, on which were illegal and about the potential health consequences for customers.
Retailers would also be more accountable for the sale of the drugs, he said.
Mental Health minister Kevin Humphries said the regular appearance of new and different substances on the drug market – a ‘‘constantly changing environment’’–required action ‘‘at both state and federal levels’’.
‘‘The government will now consider the committee’s recommendations and what action can be taken to deal effectively with this very concerning drug issue,’’ he said.

So now the government is potentially trying to ban anything that;
a) They think has the potential to cause harm
b)They think can be used as a drug
c)Does or doesn't have psychotropic effects (?!?!?)
Banning things that don't get you high. Thats new. Hopefuly they'll start legalising the things that do!

If they had a safety thresh hold for cannabis like they do for alcohol perhaps the miners and other employees that get drug tested would leave the synthetics alone. I cant see that happening any time soon though. They should be interested in impairment levels not in detection of recreational use.
