Olympics - Beijing 2008

on the matter of the chinese using underage girls in gymnastics....yeah, they're cheating, but shouldn't some credit be given for what appears to be a 12 year old competing on the same level as like a 16 or 17 or however the fuck old the US competitors are?

also, i just watched the gold medal match in women's volley ball.
i've got three words on the matter: china. is. shady.

first, you've got the one girl that "likes drama in her match" meaning, she'll fake ailment to get 5-10min in the medics tent and throw off the other team's rhythm.

they showed her doing that in a past match and then she did it AGAIN in this match.
also, they looked like they were taking advantage of the reworked scoring system.
china scored on the US like 3 or 4 times by hitting the ball directly to the top of the net, and letting it just roll over. i wouldn't be surprised if she'd practiced doing that.

and finally, misty may and that other chick were TOTALLY hot, until they won, we turned the volume up on the tv, and we heard them talk.:\

misty may's ass is still awesome though.

Bolt is a fucking beast. World records in both the 100 and 200 at the Olympics? That is unheard of. The 200 is especially impressive because a lot of people thought the Michael Johnson's 19.32 was untouchable and Bolt ran into a headwind while Johnson ran with the wind. As a fan of track and field, I really hope the guy isn't on any sort of performance enhancing drugs.

They're all on drugs at that level

They're allowed a 6:1 ratio of testosterone to epitestosterone and HGH is still undetectable (what Phelps is probably on to be able to recover to full strength between races)

But this doesn't take anything away from their achievements, simply because they're all on them

Yes, but this is different, its the host nation, and this particular host nation is particularly covert in its wrong doings

On another note, Russia are just 1 gold medal behind Great Britain.. and I know they can easily over take us with the wrestling.. but what sports remain for us Brits to pick up some more golds? I really want Great Britain to come 3rd :D

It's not like this hasn't been done before because of enhancement drugs etc.
But it's never happened in the case of underage gymnasts. I think there's only been one case where any penalty was handed out (but medals were kept), but never for the Olympics. The IOC and FIG simply don't really seem to care about age all that much.

cheers to the US womens soccer team for beating the brazlians today for gold!!!

they've come a long way since mia hamm and i'm happy they captured a world title since her's and the others' departures. just goes to show that the team wasn't the mia hamm & co show. :)

Doubtful. There is very little margin for error. Anyone using that strategy would be shooting themselves in the foot by hitting the ball into the net and it not going over......many times.

What's with everyone crying foul? :|

I had never seen rhythmic gymnastics before, that stuff is amazing!

Well, if the mass media didn't pick up on the Chinese Gymnastics coverup before, they certainly will now. With the whole "Hacking" element in there now Tech blogs will eat this story up which means the rest of the media will be eating it up within a few days. China's fucked.

You really think China's fucked? You think this under age thing and/or the bad scoring/judging will be uncovered???

I think it won't be proved but ya never know. It will be interesting to see how it all unravels.

RPG

Once Digg, Slashdot, CNet, and all the other nerds of the world get ahold of the story it's not going to go away. I'd bet money the IOC ends up taking action.

well it happened so many goddamn times.
i'd find it hard to believe that the second best team in the world would accidentally hit the net that many times.

i think the announcer even commented on it at one point.

I think Keri Walsh said that she didn't believe they did it on purpose. I think she said the reason it kept happening was because the rain made the ball heavier.

I agree with Sticky Green. It just wouldn't make sense to hit the ball at the net because it could easily work against you.

they're only cheating themselves...

They're cheating their teammates, they're cheating their fans, and most importantly of all:

THEY'RE CHEATING THE SPORT!

How much less beautiful does an artform become, once its is discovered that it is, in essence, a fraud?

I hear you there but......

How much less beautiful does an artform become, once its is discovered that it is, in essence, a fraud?

Being under an age limit does not discount the performance itself.

So, rules are rules. Everyone has to play by them. And if fraud is found, then shame on those who committed it. (those who actively faked documents and attempt to conceal the truth)
