*** NFL Playoffs ***

that said, football handicappers seem to be eerily good at setting the line.

Football "handicapers" (aka, "bookmakers") couldn't give a rat's ass about what they think is a "fair" or "accurate" point spread.

Their goal, as entreprenuers, is to ask themselves:

"What line should I set, so that 50 percent of the money that will be wagered on this game is placed on each side?"

In other words, even if the best predictor of football games in the universe thought that Seattle would beat Washington by the exact twenty-one points they ended up winning by, it still would have been foolish if he had set the line in that game anywhere NEAR 21 - even though he turned out to be right on the money with his PREDICTION in this particular game, paradoxically, the bookie's job is to MINIMIZE risk, and the best way to do so is to predict NOT what the final result will be, but rather, to predict what line will attract approximately equal amounts of wagering on each side.

Because if a bookie can do this consistently, for every 110,000 he'll collect from the losers, he'll pay 100,000 to the winners, GUARANTEEING him (barring a push) a 10,000 net gain on that particular game.

Often, the bookies do a relatively good job at predicting the approximate final score (which, again, is NOT their function), but sometimes, as in the Jax-PITT game, in which the line moved from (+1 1/2) to (-2) in a mere four days, the bookies end up taking it on the chin BIG TIME.

i understand that - they still get much closer at predicting the results than i do :)

p.s. talking of betting, any intention of making good on our bet? this will be the last time i'll ask :)

Man, all I keep hearing about is friggin' Tony Romo and how he is distracted from football by having Jessica Simpson's big ass titties in his face all day...if you can't block out outside shit like relationships and the media and get it done on game day, you aren't a real pro. Wilt Chamberlain used to bang 5 bitches before every game and would drop 50 with 20 rebounds. ;)

PLAYOFFS?!?!

Wow, big upset with the Chargers over the Colts. No surprise with the Packers, though how they came back from those two TDs off fumbles was amazing. The Pats did what I expected.

Now how about this Dallas v. New York game? Eli is having another good game, special teams is exceptional... but I am a little worried about the D. That injury to Aaron Ross is going to hurt us if we make it to the next round. I'll be back to congratulate and cry or crow victoriously after the game...

Dallas vs Giants is a great game I hope new york can hold on so green bay gets another home game.

OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Big props to the Cowboys and most especially Barber for a great game. I swear I almost had a heart attack!

Eli, you are now the toast of the town. A big fuck you to all the tabloids who tried to run him out of NY.

Can't wait to see my boys lining up against Favre and the Pack next week.

Cant beleive the giants pulled the upset next week we got
Packers vs Giants
Patriots vs Chargers

Im hoping for Packers vs Patriots in the super bowl

Giants fans, don't get your panties wet just yet.

Eli Manning will come down to earth eventually and you'll all be back to saying he has Down Syndrome.

Although, if he pulls off a great game playing at Lambeau Field, I'll give him some props.

excellent weekend of football. I will congratulate Eli Manning for playing exceptionally well - to be honest I was simply waiting for him to choke, and he wouldn't do so. that Giants offensive and most especially defensive line is superior! they really got everything done in the trenches in a hostile environment.

Tony Romo is 0-2 in the playoffs. I think Eli Manning successfully passed his loser's crown-of-roses off.

i'm so glad the giants won. i was kind of nervous about the packers playing in dallas next weekend. they've been known to choke big time down there.

I second this. I'm from Wisconsin, but I'm originally from Rhode Island so I'd be rooting for NE, and they'd most certainly be the favorite to win as far as bets go with Tom Brady tearing it up on the field.

you Fail Me Romo.

Did you see how he didn't throw it away when he needed to, and then threw it away when he didn't need to and got an intential grounding called on him? He did that just for you.

romo was throwing a serious temper tantrum when passes weren't connecting for him. until he learns to keep his cool and stay calm under the pressure, he shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as favre and brady.

His receivers did drop a couple of very important catches, but he still has to maintain composure.

it probably was hard to maintain composure with Michael Strahan all up on Romo's grill.

this ain't no barbecue, Big Mike. step off.
