It that in victoria? It looks like a place we used to visit behind a restaurant up the hills.
It is in Victoria. I don't know where you are referring to though.

shorza: yes, they where found in the eastern suburbs but there was no water present at the site. About 100 meters away was a lake though, however it was the top of a hill where the photo was taken.
The last couple of years I have found the same huge chunky mushrooms at this location in great numbers. They never flatten out like their slender counterparts, always have a concave cap and generally a short stem as thick as a finger or thicker. I suspect this behavior is to trap moisture and avoid wind getting under the cap and drying out the mushroom by passing through the gill structure (gills=huge surface area->greater water evaporation)

I was thinking outer east, close to that steam train, but further up the hills.

When do the subs usually stop growing in vic? There must be surely a few more weeks left at least?

Season stops mid to late august. Its highly variable, completely dependant on weather conditions. It could go til bloody december if the temps stayed in teens and we had consistent rainfall.

mushies in nsw

hi guys
im going to start reading up on mushies and maybe go for a pick soon, but i was wondering can someone help me with some names of the most common poisonous mushrooms in australia that get mixed up with psylocybe mushies, just so i can do a specific search, there is not too much on poisonous mushies that look like psylocybe mushrooms.

also has anyone used a mushroom grow kit in australia?, how do they go, are they worth it? are the spores counted as plant material? are they even legal in oz? ive read places that its not illegal because it doesnt accually contain psylocybin, but just to be sure, i dont want customs giving me a call.thanx
waterboy:)

Not sure about other states but in Tasmania, Psilocybin is a controlled drug but the mushrooms are not a controlled plant. From what I have read of the Misuse of Drugs Act, you could legally grow magic mushrooms. As by the given definition, you are not manufacturing Psilocybin and it is not a controlled plant. You could also not be charged with “Possessing thing intended for use in manufacture of controlled substance for sale” or “Possessing thing intended for use in cultivation of controlled plant for sale” as you are not manufacturing and it is not a controlled plant.

As long as the mushrooms are growing and not picked or dried, you could not even be charged with possession as you must posses a controlled drug and "controlled drug" is defined as “a substance, other than a growing plant…”.

I have no legal experience what so ever so maybe I am reading it wrong, but it appears that I could have a grow operation and at most, be charged with possession when I go to pick them. Psilocybin does not have a listed trafficable quantity so I’m not sure how many you could grow before you could be charged with trafficking. It also appears that I could sell “live” shrooms legally, as long as it was below a trafficable quantity.

If anyone is interested you can read the Tasmanian drug laws here: http://www.thelaw.tas.gov.au/
Just do a search for misuse of drugs. For some reason I can't put a direct link.

Excuse my ignorance, but are there federal drug laws like in the US? If so, where might I find them online?

What do you think? Can I grow some shrooms? Maybe someone a bit more intelligent than me can figure it out.

I pretty sure know exactly where you are talking about. I have found the normal variety and this type there. First time i saw them, it freaked me out, i thought they were a mutant.

In australia the Federal government's power to make laws wrt grugs is limited by the constitution. Thye can only make legislation regarding drugs if they are bound by an international treaty to do so.

So far drug laws have remained the realm of state govts.

shorza: hm Imagine that, I will say hi next time I see someone looking through the area in a peculiar way. It really is strange how much a P. Sub. can vary in physical appearance isn't it!

Pics of Psilocybe Semilanceata - In Melbourne, Australia?

As unlikely as it is, does anyone have any images of Psilocybe Semilanceata (aka Liberty Caps) picked within Australia? Erwoid/ Shroomery/ Shaman Australis searches have uncovered a nice selection of images, but nothing that has been picked within Australia.

A friend is taking photo's of their finds for an id on the shroomery, but as there are some pretty huge variants across the strain, and liberty caps don't have the reassuring blue staining, it would be great to see some local specimens.

^^^
I personaly haven't seen any here in Victoria.

Mongman - I was there the other day and can across two different groups of hunters. Had a chat to them, but it's shame, this place will be picked out in no time.

Melbourne mushroom hunting

Just wondering how all the Melbournian mushie hunters are going?

I've discovered a few small patches in my usual spots but nothing spectacular as yet.

As its getting colder they are becoming more irregular. I headed out last saturday morning not expecting much, just going for one last check before winter sets in. But I was pleasantly suprised and over joyed in coming back with nearly 100. After over 1000 from my spot already. Hopefully we have a few more weeks.
