melbourne shuffle

Belfast was really good - I hadn't had a really good dance for quite a while, and overdid it somewhat (to the point where I spent the next day at Sunshine People lying on the grass, my back and legs having stiffened up due to the unaccustomed hyperactivity). Bolland was excellent - the only disappointment was discovering that Andrew Marsh's set had become a vs, with some guy none of us knew and didn't like that much. Pretty good-sized mixed crowd in a very good mood... didn't even notice most of the QBH annoyances.

Speaking of Belfast though, and speaking of shuffling, for the first hour I thought I'd broken my shuffle. It was really weird; it felt off-balance. So I got some of my friends to play shuffle doctor... turns out it was too much breaks in my diet last time I went out, and I'd somehow acquired a move with an extra half-beat that had seemed perfectly OK at the time, but which was cumulatively knocking me out of kilter back in 4/4 land.

Once they pointed out the offending section, I could excise it and really flow for a long time - had a little crowd of (mostly non-raver) onlookers at one point, which freaked me out when I noticed.

I also ran into the Zolts, which was a beautiful surprise. Those two need to get out more dammit!

You ran into me? Hmmm....

I'm assuming another person called Zoltan?

EDIT: Melbourne shuffle kicks ass! :)

a few months ago i finished my documentary on the melbourne shuffle, i have footage from all around melbourne - clubs/raves etc of 2003, i'm trying to get inthemix to host it somehow (as it goes for 10 mins) but ill see how that goes and let everyone know when its hosted somewhere :)

Old thread revival...

I just spent a weekend in Sydney, having never really gone out there before. Went to a hard trance/hard house/etc night on Friday, and what did I find there but a sizeable number of dirty little shufflers!

They seemed to fall into three groups:

1. People who either came from Melbourne, or had spent a fair bit of time there, and had picked it up.

2. (I thought this was incredibly nifty) People who had heard of it, and sought out videos and stuff on the internet (they mentioned a "basics" video that I hadn't heard of, and the ITM one, which I had) and then taught themselves from there. I met a couple of guys in this category who actually had it down pretty good (say hi to your mates from me, up all night). I was wearing a SHUFFLE numberplate shirt, and dancing a lot, so I got a fair few comments and questions, which was way cool :D - a lot of younger girls seemed to fit this category.

3. There were also a third, quite small, group, doing what I could only describe as a Sydney shuffle. None of the ones I spoke to were deliberately dancing in the Melbourne style, and it definitely looked like a recognisable local variant. Lots of foot alternation (a bit like what a lot of Melbourne hardstylers do), but with different arm moves completely. Similar in some ways to early 90's nordic-tracking too (which I also saw for the first time in about ten years!).

All the shufflers were still in the minority, but it was really nice to see that such a fun way to dance is catching on in other places and spreading around the country. Not to mention beyond: towards the end of the night, I saw a classic, flawless Melbourne shuffle being performed... by a Japanese kid.

I was much the happy. Thanks Sydneysiders for taking time out to talk to a scattered-looking weirdo from out of town accosting you on the dancefloor and asking personal questions ;)

Nice post Joeller, thx mate...

The basics video they r talking about is most likely the one off www.xes.cx site which is:
http://www.xes.cx/download/melbournshufflebasics.zip

I also tend to chew peoples ears off about the dance style when I'm out and find that the good shufflers are either part of the old school who have been into the scene for ages or mainly doofers.

My main observation is that the new generation of ravers/clubbers do not dance as well as "we" oldschoolers do. I think, and this is purely my own opinion, that these days kids tend to concentrate more on how fucked up they can get rather than dancing/feeling good.

Ugh... and how popular is the bloody cokehead dance getting? :)

HA ha, yeah I think the coke dance style would be more agreeable if it was performed my smiling muscle bound muzza's instead of grimicing sunglass clad mean machines. But that'll never happen.

Fantastic post Joellercoaster. Needed your tuition at Kryal. Lots of people trying to shuffle ha ha ha

well i still haven even bothered learning how to do the shuffle... but i will soon i hope, dam downloads take ages on dialup :( but till then i'll keep dancing like i do now ignoring what other ppl think about me incorperating latin into the rave sceene at a faster pace whilst still jumping around like im on a pogo stick half the time.

oh i've found the cokehead dance quite fun when u are tired as and r coming down at the end of the night but still wanna keep going... always brings a laugh amongst my friends :D

I like to incorprate a littl bit of coke headedness into my dancing but its to take the piss, have a laugh with it. I'm known amomng my friends for doing funny imitations of other peoples signature moves

"Look at that person, they can't shuffle for shit."

While this comment wasn't directed at me, it's the reason why I don't dance anymore. Just because someone can't shuffle, that doesn't mean they should be looked down upon as being as non-hardcore, or that they should have stayed home. I find this attitude to be very anti-PLUR, and not what rave culture is about.

But on the upside have you even seen a shirtless mario try and shuffle! They are jsut too big and can't move fast enough!!

^^^ Yay, it's finally on!!!
I highly recommend this, it's a fantastic documentary.

I watched it tonight, but i didnt look at this thread, I thought it was 1234 tho. hehehe

whats with you people in the hot tub tho? why no demonstrations?? other than seeing a bunch of people in clubs between the strobe light.

Was good tho. :)

cool doco

but i'm with Sllip on the whole dancing thing. people do judge you and thats not fair. and dont tell me " dont give a shit about who's watching" because you cant say you've ever watched someone dance and thought about how crap they were, even if you never mentioned it to anyone.

^^^
Too true. But being a jaded old bastard like myself, it's not possible to get me high enough to dance again.
But then again, like I read somewhere once - The only people who hate shufflers/shuffling are those that can't.
