get in the mood wit some glow sticks

HAHAHAHAHAHA Yeah...

I think you mean:

"Get in the mood with some amphetamines, then pretend like glo-stix are cool"

man go out and watch peoples feet for a very basic movement then just practise from there.... that how i did it.... its took me about 2-3 months to learn how to do it basically but then after that the learning curve is much easier just move how you want to....
i have a 30second video of my friend doing the shuffle at war of the worlds in melbourne this year on my digital camera.... when i have time ill put it up.....
it was in the morning in the hard trance room when it was light so it is fairly good quality.....
DfI;)

edit: BTW the name of the song in that ITM vid is Lithium - Blackout i think.... pretty sure its on music for a harder generation - yoji biomehanika

There are a few people up in Brisbane who attempt to "shuffle", but unfortunately it bears more resemblence to some cracked out flapper from the 20's doing a mutant form of the charleston. There's one person i've seen shuffle well and that's our very own SupaSpeed :)

Oh, and for some odd reason, every time i hear the term "Melbourne Shuffle" I think of that old song that had the 3 stooges in it...

"...Well we never miss a chance we get up and dance and do the Melbourne shuffle...nyuk nyuk nyuk nyyyuk..."

well, i've grown up in melbourne, and until about a year ago, i thought that's how everyone danced to techno.... like..... all around the world. apparently that's not so. how could you dance differently? i mean, in every other country do dudes dance like typical 'ravers' or 'clubbers' we see on tv and movies????

if so... that is some fucked up shit... those motherfuckers look like such gimps... thankgod i've always lived in melbourne :)

Melbourne fucking rocks.

(not just the shuffle)

I hear ya sister. Shuffle like knowbodies business.

Some parents think school aint cool so they teach their kids at home.

If you wish to learn latin dancing you dont just turn up to Bull Ring and hope for the best. C'mon guys. If people want to learn let em. If it doesnt interest you then leave it out eh!

oh i wonna learn the melbourne shuffle, i might have to start taking speed at clubs to get my feet moving and start copying

^^^ Get into it bro, its a shitload of fun.....like people have said there are so many individual variations that even tho everyone does "the shuffle" everyone is still dancing different....

Yeah I can shuffle ok, i mean i can go side to side and tap feet and jump and shit all night, but i like to add a heap of variations to my dancing....like spins, bobbing up+down, kicks and when things get nice n hard, i do a good head bang whilst shuffling (can get messy :D)....its the best form of dance i have seen so far.....as for the "running man", i think i saw a guy doing some of that the other night, it looks fucking sick when done right....i was trying to incorporate it into my shuffling, but need more practice....i also wanna work on some hat tricks (even tho its cheesy, its pretty cool @ the same time :D)

^^ i agree with the hat thing, my mate hicky's is the best at it!! it looks rad and at the same time your having som much fun!! I like doing my style of melbs shuffle

haha wow a melb shuffle thread. i was obsessed with learning this thing for a few months, and i think i have it now, altho boy, did i look stupid for months on end trying 2 pull it off! haha.

oh well, i love doing it 2 breaks, i love doing it 2 anything really, once i finally got it i couldnt stop, haha. but i HATE trying 2 do it on unslidey floors, its a KILLER on your calf muscles.

and i'd love 2 be able to work a spin in there, but cant see how :(

and another thing, i have 2 remember to use my arms! soemtimes i totally forget about them, and its like im riverdancing haha. i hate arms, its all about the legs for me.

The melbounre shuffles is sweet kinda in the process of learning it, got the basics, it's trying to work things into it thats a lil harder but its fun all the same

Brisbane wavey-thing?

A friend of mine was in Brisbane recently, and said he detected a strange and new kind of raver dance. When he demonstrated it, I realised I'd seen it before once or twice as well.

It bobbed and weaved around a lot, and at one point involved apparently falling over then leaping back up again, and had something similar to the shuffle's back-step in there somewhere too.

I'm a shuffler to my core, can't dance any other way, but I'm intrigued to think other cities might be developing their own forms of 4/4 folkdancing. Can anyone from B-Vegas fill me in?

ok, ima attempt to drop some knowledge.

the dance known as the "melbourne shuffle" is really just hip-hop/breakin footwork known as 'toprock'. The difference is, is that it's done to electronic music, and this creates a totally different feel (and totally different moves).
I for one really enjoy watching shuffling (and attempting it). I believe that anyone who disses the Melbourne shuffle either hasn't seen a master at work, doesn't like dancing at all, or is just jealous and can't dance themselves. Shuffling is so versatile that hating on it is just ignorant.

Anyways, the 'Brisbane Stomp' is another type of dance that the Briz population has added its own flavour too and created something of their own. A very very high-energy dance, it involves jumping (or stepping) up and down with leg patterns, kicks, spins, drops, and recently, a few breakin' powermoves. I really enjoy watching good stompers at work, there is a crew called Tunzen in Brisbane, they performed at the recent Advent*Jah party, and they go off. Really cool guys as well.
The only problem with stomping is that it usually only looks good when done to Hard music. This isn't a problem for some people, just for me, because more than half an hour of hardcore and my heart starts to palpitate.

Then there's liquid. I'm sure most people on this forum have heard me crapping on about liquid a few times but I feel it's worth a mention. It's the newest "rave" dance style around, and it's undoubtedly the coolest to watch.

^this is an australian Liquid/Popping forum, growing rapidly. We have quite a few members from Melb who are very good shufflers, from what i've seen so far.

Liquid Pop Collective
^Opening very soon, best liquid crew in the world. These guys are gods.

true and then some.
everything else you said is also "right on the money." except being a "rap/break dancer" from as far back as 1980ish, i find liquid just a rehash of elec boogie from then, only pumped up for the tekkas market. does that make sense?

yes Mr Spgeddi, you are correct, which is why a large majority of "rap dancers" (god i hate that term) don't respect Liquid or even see it as a dance of its own.

The fundamentals of Liquid (ie. the hand flow) has been done by poppers as far back as the late 70's. But this was just a move, from a style called Waving, they didn't actually dance with the aim of continuous flow.

Then as the rave scene emerged, rave dancers took these fundamentals of waving, and put them together with continuous flow through the body. A few years ago, Liquid was known as "liquid popping" but after the LPC met up with Mr Wiggles, he explained to them that a dance needs its own rules and foundation before it can be recognized. So the LPC set it upon themselves to create a foundation, which they've done in their video "All Access: Liquid & Digitz"

So thesedays, the dance of Liquid has so many ideas, philosophies, concepts, and it is evolving everyday.

in conclusion, yes ur right ;)

There's a guy floating around Brisbane events who wears all black except for white cotton gloves, like a mime.

Well, he is a mime. He stands 3/4 towards the back of the room in the middle and mimes exactly what a DJ would do, down to bending over for another record. It's trippy to watch when you're chopped out your head, watching him nudge the left deck foward a little and then cross over when the (real) DJ throws in a big buildup.

It would be cheesy faggotry if he didn't do it to utter perfection, in full seriousness, for hours on end.

Now being from perth I'm not entirly sure what the melbourne shuffle is, that video didnt help me (dial up).
But over here there is a style of dancing that I see often done to more up tempo styles. (hard house, sometimes DnB etc)
Its affectionatley known as the hopscotch dance. Any one familiar with this?

I have seen it done both really well and really poorly.
Even attempted it myself a few times. I find it works well with DnB for me.
Any one else familiar with this?

^^ I think I might have some idea what you speak of... :\

I was in Canberra on the weekend.....i found most of the club was doing a sort of dance i was very fond of when i first started dancing, mainly cause it comes naturally, and is easy....it's sort of a jumping thing where you move your feet around into different positions when you land....hard to explain i guess....but lemme say the shuffle shits all over it! Myself, and 2 other melbournites who i met on the night cut up the rug in representation of all the shufflers out there.....was awesome :)
