Old thread revival...
I just spent a weekend in Sydney, having never really gone out there before. Went to a hard trance/hard house/etc night on Friday, and what did I find there but a sizeable number of dirty little shufflers!
They seemed to fall into three groups:
1. People who either came from Melbourne, or had spent a fair bit of time there, and had picked it up.
2. (I thought this was
incredibly nifty) People who had heard of it, and sought out videos and stuff on the internet (they mentioned a "basics" video that I hadn't heard of, and the ITM one, which I had) and then taught themselves from there. I met a couple of guys in this category who actually had it down pretty good (say hi to your mates from me, up all night). I was wearing a SHUFFLE numberplate shirt, and dancing a lot, so I got a fair few comments and questions, which was way cool :D - a lot of younger girls seemed to fit this category.
3. There were also a third, quite small, group, doing what I could only describe as a Sydney shuffle. None of the ones I spoke to were deliberately dancing in the Melbourne style, and it definitely looked like a recognisable local variant. Lots of foot alternation (a bit like what a lot of Melbourne hardstylers do), but with different arm moves completely. Similar in some ways to early 90's nordic-tracking too (which I also saw for the first time in about ten years!).
All the shufflers were still in the minority, but it was really nice to see that such a fun way to dance is catching on in other places and spreading around the country. Not to mention beyond: towards the end of the night, I saw a classic, flawless Melbourne shuffle being performed... by a Japanese kid.
I was much the happy. Thanks Sydneysiders for taking time out to talk to a scattered-looking weirdo from out of town accosting you on the dancefloor and asking personal questions
