melbourne shuffle

Oh, shut up.

You know everything there is to know about it, that's cool, you don't need to look at this thread. Plenty of other people are just discovering it, or still want to talk about it... people are still saying interesting, on-topic things in this thread seven pages in, so obviously it's serving some purpose.

How about... the fact that there are hundreds of baby ravers jumping on board, and part of what they like it the dancing style? They come to bluelight (where they are welcome). Just 'cause you're old-skool and full of the glory years, doesn't mean they won't get some pleasure/encouragement/interest factor out of a big, prominent shuffle thread. The fact that they aren't as cool as you doesn't mean you have to piss on them.

Nice one. I wish the wankers here in Melbourne would thing (sic) of something new to do other than walk around being jaded and bitchy.

shuffling is hard with sore calves and heavy shoes :(
then again, for my first time even giving it a try (i had no idea what it looked like till watching those two clips) it came kinda naturally
 
Having only seen two 30 second clips and a very dodge 15 second demonstation by Miss Slingshot early one morning at a doof, i tried to demonstrate to a friend a couple of nights ago how the shuffle works 8).

I *know* i was good but they weren't impressed. :p

I suffer for my art.

I used to shuffle and spin and jump............ but after going to doofs for a while i just stomp and dance with more flow, and I actually enjoy it a lot more. I will admit that shuffling looks good in the right place..... but sometimes it's out of place........ like bush parties, normal clubs and crowded areas, and in these places it actually looks a little silly. Like at e.c during infected the dancefloor was packed yet this chick was shuffling everywhere and smacking everyone and it was not cool! When i went to my first doof i was shuffling my ass off thinking i was top shit, not realising that no one there cares for dancing in which you are showing off. When your a good dancer it's too easy to become concerned with everyone looking in instead of you simply pushing good energy out....... but that is of course, just my own opinion :)

i think you are being judgemental. obviously that's not your intention, but imo, i don't think that's preventing it from being the case. clearly, you don't see how any dance movements with predefined steps is a 'proper' form of self-expression, but it's just as clear that others do think so.

it's not as if anyone doing the shuffle has to adhere strictly to any set-out rules or anything, it's merely a guide (or, actually, a description of the style which has evolved out of the melbourne dance culture). and thus it is actually encouraged that people innovate - bring their own moves to the dance, create new steps and incorporate it into what is known as the shuffle, and this is how the dance -has- and will continue to involve :)

and although some people think that the shuffle is a total wank, (and sometimes it is) it's just another style that evolves with the scene, just like doof dancing and cokie 'trolley pushing'....

and no matter what anyone says i like the shuffle! i think it is an awesome way to freely dance like a total dick....and boo to the people who say "you have hours practice ahead of you", they can shove it up their ass because its your own style, there is no real exact way to do the shuffle.....*and i have done extensive research* =D
 
1234 if you knew me you would know i'm not judgemental. I'm probably one of the most open minded people you can ever meet :)

I don't think anyone but scatterface actually understands what i'm saying so i'm really not going to try and explain again

ive only been to a few of the major raves since i turned 18, but the moment i saw wat i now is know as the "melbourne shuffle" thanx to this thread, i loved it. going to summer dayze twice and two tribs twice, although commercial events now, i found enuf of the shufflers to watch and get the idea on how to do it. i remebered thinking to myself that, if i can't take my eyes off of them, imagine if i could do it. so i watched and learnt and practiced and picked up a few moves. im not an awsome shuffler but im getting there. and if any of u guys wana do it and join in, u can so do it, cause i like so many others was utterly hopeless and unco at so many of my attempts.

for me, doing the shuffle intensifies the experience with the music and just helps u to fall deeper and deeper into the music and rocks ur world.

the last 2 times i went to a rave i took E for the first time and i must admit it helped the way i danced cause i didn't get tired, saw and i could keep up with the beat. but its still good without the drugs aswell. if u get it, and ur feet start to do wat u want, u wont regret it. its one of the best dance stiles going round and im proud to live in the city of its origance.

oh, and its not steps or copying because there are so many different stiles and moves out there that the way u dance is diverse from everyone else!
 
ohh btw: has anyone seen anyone overseas doing the melbourne shuffle? or anything similar? or has anyone gone overseas to somewhere like ireland or the england and danced the shuffle at an event, and wat did the locals over there think about it?
 
got into trouble at bush party in sunday morif cause i was making to much dust fly as i was going the shuffle

i got hooked on the shuffle last tim ei was down in melbourne
 
doofqueen, i understand exactly what you are saying and agree with you, i just got a bit of a shuffle going at my last event, bout time i got it too, but i just did it to learn it and be able to do it.

dancing should be an expression of your inner feelings and emotions, these can be expressed through a technique. its hard to explain but i'll give an example (a weird one st that too:\ )

ok many of u know about visualisationd on things like winamp and mediaplayer etc. think of a type of dance (suffleing, tap, ballet, etc) as the visualisation's basic shape (say a circle that moves around, fades out and changes colour) pretty boring ey. but when you get music playing the circle is no longer a circle and it starts having spikes and so forth protruding from it in complete harmony with the music. that visual effect is then 'cool'

basically its fine to use a base style, but your personal touch to it should be what is important, and it is what gives character to your dancing. it you can shuffle real well then people will see you dancing and say "wow that looks madd" but then if they watch you for a while they will see that it in fact is boring, unless it is full of personal touches, and things that you dont ever see people doing. (one that i do is kick the back of my knee with my ankle, looks good and confuses people because it makes my whole body drop like 20 cm and they cant figure out if it was an accident or deliberate [1st time i did it it was an accident tho])

I haven't, but I've talked to people who have. Apparently you get a lot of comments, epecially if you're out with other shufflers in a group - people just flip right out. Especially if they're loved-up and chatty ;p

Actually I've had that happen in other cities in Australia :P

You get the occasional person who knows it's a Melbourne/Aussie thing apparently... I dunno, I'm about to spend a year or so traveling and will be doing a fair bit of partying in that time. My GF and I both have a pretty distinctive shuffle, so I'll let you know.
 
it was seen by a prominent DJ once in a rave at scotland. Maybe it was gatecrasher, i dont know. He mentioned it and commended. Ill try to find the link, but dont hold your breathe.
 
i thought the melbourne shuffle was trying to find your way to flinders street station while intoxicated as fuck.

when i lived in amsterdam (1997-2002) there was a dance step colloquially known as the "Utrecht Toprock". this is particularly common in northern netherlands (groningen etc) where lots of university parties were held.

the melbourne shuffle is somewhat similar, but with a lot more flair and twists and turns etc.

the "Utrecht Toprock" is basically a 8-beat (2-bar) with a syncopated downstep on every beat except the first, the dominant foot is down on the syncopated step and the less dominant on the beat itself. (hmm... i guess i am not explaining it too well).

i have also seen this done at some german parties, but mostly in the west (koln area).

it's mostly danced to Rotterdam Hardcore, or various Happy Hardcore, but as i been noticing last few weeks, it well suited to Hard Style/FreeForm. very hard, very fast.

once in a while, when i get really hyper, i break into that the Utrecht Toprock.

and boo to the f*ckwit tonight at Gas who made a snide comment about "he can't do the Melbourne shuffle properly".

well, it's ain't the Melbourne shuffle :)
