the "Utrecht Toprock" is basically a 8-beat (2-bar) with a syncopated downstep on every beat except the first, the dominant foot is down on the syncopated step and the less dominant on the beat itself. (hmm... i guess i am not explaining it too well).
No, you're explaining it pretty well. If it's the style I'm thinking of... I don't think it's really shuffle-like except with regard to body position, though I guess take your point there.
Aaanyway. I was actually reviving this thread in a bit of a negative way, rather than my usual shameless pro-shuffle stance. What a lot of people doin't realise is that shuffling is
bad for you.
No, really. Quite a few long-term Melbourne dancers don't shuffle any more, and not because they don't like it. It's because their knees, ankles and feet are
fucked. RSI from shuffling can be serious and long-term. It manifests itself in different ways in different people, but the fact is, it's a very stressful activity. Obviously it depends on your shuffle style, but I know the bones in the top of my left foot, and my whole right knee, can be pretty tender after even a moderate night's work. And I don't even go out that much.
Even if your injuries aren't directly caused by dancing, a netball injury (to pick a friend's example) can mean no more shuffling, ever, because it makes the chances of recurrence pretty much certain.
Warm up and down before and after you dance, I guess. And take breaks, even when you're tweaking/peaking/freaking
(And to whoever was asking about international recognition... not only is it recognised, according to
this thread on another forum, it's taking off in other places.)
