melbourne shuffle

next time i see someone dancing, i'm just going to say
"oh, he can't do the [insert-made-up-name-of-dance-here]"
just to make them feel inferior, despite the dance doesn't exist in the first place.

besides, hardcore punk dancing is a lot more difficult, especially since there is no rhythm and within 5 seconds of doing it, you've probably started 3 fights.

the "Utrecht Toprock" is basically a 8-beat (2-bar) with a syncopated downstep on every beat except the first, the dominant foot is down on the syncopated step and the less dominant on the beat itself. (hmm... i guess i am not explaining it too well).

No, you're explaining it pretty well. If it's the style I'm thinking of... I don't think it's really shuffle-like except with regard to body position, though I guess take your point there.

Aaanyway. I was actually reviving this thread in a bit of a negative way, rather than my usual shameless pro-shuffle stance. What a lot of people doin't realise is that shuffling is bad for you.

No, really. Quite a few long-term Melbourne dancers don't shuffle any more, and not because they don't like it. It's because their knees, ankles and feet are fucked. RSI from shuffling can be serious and long-term. It manifests itself in different ways in different people, but the fact is, it's a very stressful activity. Obviously it depends on your shuffle style, but I know the bones in the top of my left foot, and my whole right knee, can be pretty tender after even a moderate night's work. And I don't even go out that much.

Even if your injuries aren't directly caused by dancing, a netball injury (to pick a friend's example) can mean no more shuffling, ever, because it makes the chances of recurrence pretty much certain.

Warm up and down before and after you dance, I guess. And take breaks, even when you're tweaking/peaking/freaking :p

(And to whoever was asking about international recognition... not only is it recognised, according to this thread on another forum, it's taking off in other places.)

Spot on Joeller. I find that after a big session in a night on the floor, the next few days my calves and feet hurt.

Last Sunday, I was at a recovery and ran into a bunch of asian dudes who were using talcum powder on the floor. I hadn't seen this for ages, so I kindly asked if I could borrow some. Worked a treat and it took some of the stress of the poor old weary feet and legs.

I've seen some guys also using water but this could be dangerous if you slip. :)

Also... wear good runners! No notchy/chunky treads. As flat a sole as u can get. :D

I'm trying to work out if the ravers that I see out, and am totally impressed with are actually doing the shuffle or not. I'm not so sure - bc they seem to be moving their feet off the floor more. And they don't seem to be moving in such a right to left motion but rather they remind me of more of a wind milling action.??

But urgh, I've watched that video with the basics and I don't get it. And it shits me when I can't do stuff. Besides from the fact that I'm always looking for ways to make my dancing more interesting. I consider dancing to be an aesthetic thing, so I want it to look good, bc people shouldn't have to look at crap stuff. That sounds rather conceited but honestly theres nothing hotter than good dancers. And it seriously looks like good fun.

I find that top rocking to music is fun, bc you get to bounce, and if youre munted and totally in the flow it feels great, but anyone wanna teach me to shuffle? Seriously?

it was seen by a prominent DJ once in a rave at scotland. Maybe it was gatecrasher, i dont know. He mentioned it and commended. Ill try to find the link, but dont hold your breathe.

Nuts! I doubt this is that related, but i was at a small club event in Perth, Scotland a few years back. I come from Perth, Australia, but now livin gin Melbourne. My mates over there took me to my namesake city for my birthday to see Danny Howells. All good!
The man came and grabbed me and bought me a beer when he finished his set.. i was grooving away in front of the booth like i always do, and he said he'd never seen anything like it. Hehehehe not the melbourne shuffle, but i did realise when i was there that no-one was dancing anything like what i was doing....

I don't think i've seen the shuffle in full swing here yet, i'll keep an eye out :)

I have a permanent injury from damn shuffling! i shuffled right into my friends bed! my foot went right under it, totally stuffing my toe. it swelled right up, huge bruising... never saw a doctor, and 2 months later, it still hurts... i probably broke something.

y oh y didnt i see a doctor.

at least i can still shuffle tho.

(for any docs out there... i cant bend my big toe forward enuf, it starts 2 really hurt.. whatever that means..)and putting weight on the ball of the big toe (where it joins the foot bone or whatever, hurts..)

Please people: STRETCH before all dance sessions! (and don't stretch cold, it can do more harm than good, warm up 1st by jogging or doing jumping jacks or some LIGHT dancing)

Now I'm hearing some silly comments coming from some of you ppl, like Melb is the birthplace of the Shuffle? something to that extent??

Sorry for speakin da truth (i'm sure i've said this before) but the Shuffle is nothing new. This form of "candystep" has been done in the States, UK, Europe for a long time. It's closely related to BBoying, Housedance, Funk Styles (if u wanna get technical)
What IS original, is the way that Melb has embraced it, given it a foundation (basic steps) and practiced, practiced, practiced. Now it has evolved into something quite special and I love it.

I only recently learnt how to shuffle and now incorporate it into my Funk Styles. It goes very well with a sub-style called "Floating" (where u use ur feet to pull u to the side so it looks like ur floating) and also "Gliding" (think MJ's Moonwalk).

And now I've achieved the ultimate, Shuffling + Liquid.
^This requires some serious concentration & skill. I've never been to Melb before but can't wait to hit it up and feast my eyes on local talent. I hear some of you are taking it to extraordinary levels, keep it up 8o

EDIT: and LMAO at that "Basics" clip?? If you wanna teach someone the basics, you gotta do it slooooooowly, and add some dialogue as a verbal guide. How is anyone supposed to learn from that?

Jammer - the only people who think I'm an expert shuffler when they see me dance are not expert shufflers :P

I make up for it with love of the style, though. And I've taught quite a few people (that munted chorus-line incident at Hyperactive 3 doesn't count) - evangelism of the worst kind :)

Funluvingirl, come to Belfast (or Kandy tonight, *not* a regular occurrence but I'll be there this once) and we'll talk shop?

I'm in Melb..

Wanting to go to belfast - why does it always come down to money?! And its such a small amount - difference between one party and another is $10. grrrrr.

Lucky I haven't seen u dance then. :P

FLG: What type places do u frequent (no need to mention names)? What's the quality of dancing like there?

Well I guess I frequent clubs rather than raves mainly, and I generally tend to find the dancing quite shit. It's funny really, bc the people are way more concerned with their image yet they don't look good when they dance. And I find that the girls don't dance hard, i guess they're worried they'll look 'un girl like' or they're carrying a bag or something. really frustrates me. I'm often told that I look unapproachable when I'm dancing but that's only bc I get into it.
Well yeah and theres more people that are drinking so of course theyre completely uncoordinated. I could just slap people that get in my space when Im trying to dance.
But yeah if you go to the harder dance clubs say on chapel st, you get a lot of the coke head dance. Since when was shaking your fist in the air a dance?!
But certain recovery clubs on chapel st, have good dancers - i.e. more enthusiastic and people that are aware that they look good when they dance. Although I'm finding the standards slipping - not so many stand out ones anymore. But yeah there used to be heaps of shuffling going on. Maybe theyre starting to struggle for room though? It can get pretty packed...
But when you say quality of dancing, I guess its really what youre into. I mean, some people think ravers look stupid but Im totally in awe...

FLG: I hear u! Sounds as though we frequent the same clubs. I'll drop u a PM.

I know it's been done to death but... what is with that cokehead dance??? The sad thing is that girls are getting into it as well. I was at a recovery on umm... er... commercial rd a while back and actually saw a group of young girls doing the cokehead dance... it was a sad sad day. :(

ok...watching videos is a gr8 help, and there awsome just to admire the talent and skills some ppl hav got...but iv found that the only way to improve my shuffling is to go to places where people do it...watch it, and try to emulate it...once you pick up the basic moves, from there you can begin to individualise it and make it ur own.

its guranteed that your gunna like like a dick at the start, but know one cares (if they do, its just cause they're arrogant dicks). give it some time and ull be looking beta and beta each time u bust a move! im only just getting into the scene but ive noticed already that after just a couple of major raves (2Tribes etc), im 200% beta than i was at the start. and the most important step i believe is...well its impossible to describe in short...so PM me if u want me to try to explain it...i noticed that once i got this step happening, things looked and felt a lot beta!

ohhhh PERSONAL PREFERENCE......shuffling is an awsome way to dance to hard or funked up music...i lurrrrvvvvv it!

happiness is when you are doing a particular style and someone from overseas (where you had originally learnt it from) recognizes it and starts doing it with you :)

alrite, i think i speak on behalf of so many that the worl and bluelighters(some/lots/u know who u are) want to see more video of the shuffle and loaded onto the net! as soon as i get myself one of those video camcorders, im jumpin straight on it...could be a while, those things are damn expensive!

Well we're having a big one on Sat night and I think one of the boys has a camera. Might try to get some footage (hehe pun intended!).

:)

I wana learn how to shuffle too. I think im getting the hang of the basic, moving left and right, but i keep repeating it. Need to update my moves. Need help on dis... Help....
