Well, no actually it was. You previously said, "they do not offer a substantial effect."

My argument is, and remains, that tea is not as physically addictive as isolated opiates on a milligram per milligram basis...It is also my position that tea is not as effective psychoactively on a milligram per milligram basis...

Well, you are correct. A cup of tea weights several ounces. But a cup of tea can contain (it does the way I brew it) enough alkaloids to produce a high (and physical dependence) as great (if not greater) than any high (or addiction) to pure, isolated opiates/opiods.

Finally Morning Glory comes through...It is in the volume.

Yeah, but I never argued that it takes more tea (by weight) to get the effects of 10mg of heroin, or 30mg of morphine. Obviously a cup of tea is a greater amount that a tiny pill of morphine (or oxy, etc.)

I took issue with your statement that opium tea produces no substantial effect. Many opiate users find poppy tea (brewed from 5g to 10g of potent pods) produces an effect of considerable potency...as powerful (or more powerful in some cases) as an experience from a dose of oxycodone or even heroin.

One last note Morning Glory: 30 mgs. of morphine is not considered a substantial dose by most users.

Yes, I agree...which is why it is (seemingly) obvious that the other alkaloids have a certain synergy with the morphine. I have a fair amount of experience with pure morphine. Without hesitation, I can say that a cup of my tea made with 6g of pods (statistically should contain 30mg of morphine) feels way stronger in effect than 30mg of morphine. It also lasts much longer...morphine makes me high for (maybe) six hours. A cup of tea still has me buzzing up to twelve hours later. That opium tea lasts longer than pure morphine is further support for the presence of a synergy between all the alkaloids present in opium. Unless you just feel like arguing more that is. ;)

Back to splitting hairs...

Well I have 2 hours until I check back into the real world and go to work so I cannot play word games any more. I will leave it at this: The studies show that "tea" does not offer the same severity of addiction as isolated alkaloids [on a mg. per mg. basis].

You are not making sense Fast...30mgs of morphine in tea equals an awful lot of tea while 30 mgs of isolated morphine is the size of an aspirin. To consume 30 mgs. via tea you have to drink how many cups?

MorningGlory: And I repeat:Tea does not offer a substantial effect in comparison to isolated alkaloids on a mg. per mg. basis...produce some data or admit defeat.

one last,last comment...

Re your last post MorningGlory: Some botanicals do have a marked synergy due to their combination of psychactive alkaloids...various cacti come to mind...but poppy teas alkaloids all behave in the same fashion. An opiate is an opiate...it attaches to the same receptors so there would be no difference of effect other than degree...your argument still holds no water [or tea as the case may be]...

A few quotes

Rachamim18: I thought I'd put a few statements of yours in focus:-

-------------------------------------------------------------------
I never said that they do not offer an opiate high...rather that they do not offer a substantial effect

Actually, the mental component is irrelevant as it cannot be qualified. I am only addressing the physical aspect.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Actually the reason that pods are scored is because it is the opium that contains the alkaloids, not the pods

It is in a small number of cells first of all and the total percentage wise (of the pods) rarely climbs out of the single digits [in terms of morphine content]

As for morphine being the highest percentage [out of the psychoactive alkaloids] in pods...yep, but the highest concentration in any variety is in the teens,You have a pod with 15% morphine...

----------------------
Pods are not psychoactive in themselves

You work with pods that are stronger than heroin?I doubt it since pods are just the source of opium which is itself the sap that contains dozens of alkaloids

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
fastandbulbous
You didn't answer the question. From the figures regarding the amount of morphine in 0.2g of opium (30mg), and the amount of opium in 6g of pods (30mg), whats the difference other than the physical state of the morphine when ingested?

rachamim18
I did not see that it was a question but I will play along...NOTHING. That does not change the reality that it takes a hell of alot more pods [ as opposed to any other substance] to reach the desired effects and develop the same severity of addiction. How does your question factor in to a mg. per mg. ratio?

fatandbulbous
So you admit that the pod tea experience is the same as eating opium, its just a matter of amount. I wasn't argueing about the amount needed, just that they are capable of producing the same effects (if you use enough pods in the preparation of the tea)?

rachamim18
Well of course Fast but I do not believe that it was ever a point of contention. My argument is, and remains, that tea is not as physically addictive as isolated opiates on a milligram per milligram basis...It is also my position that tea is not as effective psychoactively on a milligram per milligram basis

fastandbulbous
...your contention that consuming pod tea is akin to eating opium is seriously flawed

Your words I believe. No mentions of amounts etc, just straight out "they're not the same"

rachamim18

I thought that you of all people would not need that fact reiterated but so be it.

How else could a person make a comparison between different substances than through a milligram per milligram comparison?

fastandbulbous
We are - 30mg of morphine from opium compared with 30mg of morphine from pod tea

rachamim18
If you have any experience with opiates/opioids and attempt to obtain the same feeling from "tea" than I am afraid that you will find yourself disappointed
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And finally:-
Actually I am right but I will let someone else do my arguing...

Can someone please come forward backing his arguement

Please tell me if I've misquoted you anywhere

Zzz...

Go back and reread the entire thread and you will find 2 scientific studies that qualify all of those wonderfully quoted statements of mine...and to think I put stock in your opinion...

Here we go again...

Thebaine is stimulating, not a narcotic. Papaverine has no real pain-killing properties...but can cause sedation (and mild physical addiction according to the PDR.) While some codeine is transformed to morphine, codeine's actions do not at all feel like morphine. Yes, codeine is a painkiller...but it does not behave exactly as morphine does.

Expanding further...there are several different opiate receptors. I know precious little about opiate pharmacology. But I do realize that mu-1 angonists are most associated with the euphoria, but some of the other receptors (when chemicals that act as agonists are present) are associated with sedation and tranqualization, as well as more bazaar effects (hallucinations with the kappa). Certainly you would not argue that different receptor affinities (and different opiates do have different receptor affinities) would result in different subjective effects.

Knowing that opium contains many psychoactives other than morphine (that have effects different than morphine), why is it beyond reason that opium alkaloids would not have a marked synergy as cacti alkaloids do? indeed, mescaline is the primary chemical in San Pedro cacti. The others occur in much smaller quantities...some only present in trace amounts. Many are not psychoactive. Yet, few who have tried pure mescaline, as well as Pedro, would maintain that drinking Pedro offers the same experience as taking a salt of pure mescaline. You realize that too.

So why can trace cacti alkaloids (some not even psychoactive) synergize with mescaline...but it is beyond your reason that the trace alkaloids in opium (many psychoactive...but not all narcotic) would synergize with the morphine? This does not add up, does it?

Moreover...why does opium tea last up to twelve hours (or even longer)? Pure morphine does not ever last this long. Does this not all add up to some synergy occuring between the various opium alkaloids?

Well of course it doesn't add up, little you have brought forth here does. It seems you have some drive to simply argue for the sake of arguing. But yes, it takes two to tango here...so I best just let the others judge for themselves who is actually making a sound argument, and who has flown off the deep end. :|

What are you talking about? Are you saying all opiates have the same effect, but just in different degrees? Are you serious? Are you proposing that morphine, hydrocodone, oxycodone, meperdine, codeine, oxymorphone, propoxyphene, etc all act in the exact same manor...but are just of a different potency?

And by saying this, you have done a major flip-flop (or a Kerry ;) ) from your previous claim. In following this logic, what am I to make of your earlier claims...that opium pods do not provide a substantial effect, and do not produce a physical dependency that compares with that of morphine or other narcotics. If the effects do not compare...how is it that a "opiate is an opiate"?

If the shoe fits, it doesn't matter because they are all the same?

Now I am really confused.

Tokerman: There is a reason that you do not see pod tea...as I have said a couple of times already...on a milligram per milligram basis tea just does not compare. Do you even wonder that if tea was so powerful it WOULD be available on the black market? I am sorry but your lack of understanding is showing. The morphine in tea will not give you the same effect as insufflated heroin [on a mg. per mg. basis of course] because heroin enables morphine to cross the blood to brain barrier at 3 times the rate of ingested morphine. Therefore you would have to do at least 3 times the amount of morphine to get the same reaction.

The rush would not make anything more physically addictive [that is the subject at hand remember]. Neither would the mode of administration. Please study the science of addiction for a much better understanding.

Actually I am arguing that the alkaloidal content in tea does not make it as physically addictive as heroin on a milligram per milligram basis...

Your last line is patently wrong because in the case of mental addiction no substance is easier than any other...That is one area that you can certainly use your subjective reports from Erowid and Poppies.org....

rachamim18: I understand your passion to continue this fight that somehow H is more physically addicting and harder to withdrawal then Pod Tea. Personal attacks are really not welcome as this is an important matter which younger less experienced readers take this kind of advice to heart.

Withdrawal and addiction by nature is subjective. One person may find WD easier and the item less addictive, one may find it harder. However all the components on both sides have the ability to cause both.

mg for mg Heroin is stronger because its more concentrated. However, the Tea contains the same things that cause addiction and withdrawal as H. I called it elitist because it seems you think that some yuppie sitting inside his house ordering Pods and making Tea is somehow less "real" or "hardcore" then an H addict banging a 40 bag. Addiction is addiction, withdrawal is withdrawal. Pod Tea is not a toy and is not something to take lightly in regards to recreational use. If people here, as this is a harm reduction site, start to think, hey, well if Pod Tea is weak and not really hard to WD from or get addicted to, then you’re going to have a problem on your hands.

Mentally, you say that its all the same when its not. One drug can be easier, depending on the person, mentally to overcome then another. Many cigarette smokers calm the hardest part of quitting is the fact they don’t have anything in their hand, that the act of lighting up itself is just as addictive and troublesome as the nicotine.

Can you OD from Pod Tea? Yes Can you OD from H? Yes Can you become addicted to both, yes. Insufflated heroin will make you nod and so will Pod Tea. The rush might be greater with H because of the method of consumption, but the end result is the same. An Opiate Nod is an Opiate Nod.

The question that seems to be in play is that H is much more addictive and harder to withdrawal from. I wonder if those people on Poppy.org that have been fighting addiction would agree.

The reason Pod Tea isn’t on the black market is because who would walk around with a flask of tea to sell when H is available is smaller units with more of a quick fix and rush then Tea. Besides, if you know where to look Pods are pretty available as H is not.

All I am getting at, is those of you that decide to do Tea, for whatever reason, be it, easier to get, less stigma....understand that Tea can cause severe addiction, physical withdrawals and overdose deaths just like heroin. Its not a toy or recreational drug, and isn’t something to be taken lightly.

Who knows, technically you might be scientifically right, but as a Pod Tea drinker and someone who has known people go through the horror of withdrawal from Pod Tea, its important people weigh this before jumping in.

All yours

In my last post, the words were all yours from this thread. In at least a couple of places, you contradict yourself, or claim a point wasn't the issue when previously you had argued the point as relevant.

As for putting faith in my opinion, I wouldn't want anybody to hold any faith in my opinion, unless I could back it with published facts or logical inference (as I can drop clangers with the best of them, and have done so in a spectacular manner in the past).

To that end, if anybody else can show me where (and how) I'm wrong, I'm willing to listen, and acknowledge that I was incorrect (as was the case in my statement that morphine and opium/poppy tea are similar. MGS pointed out that there are other alkaloids that have an effect that makes the feel of opium slightly different to morphine. I was incorrect, and I admit it; what I didn't do is try to twist the facts, and my statements so that I didn't have to admit that my initial view was incorrect).

Pride has no place in the quest for scientific truth

PS. I've checked back through this thread, and I cannot find any hyperlinks to papers on the net. Again, if it's me who can't see them for looking, I'd appreciate any guidance/help

Agreed, I just want people to know how both drugs, for better or for worse can be dangerous and addictive.

From reading this thread, I have come to the conclusion that rachamim18 is simply a heroin elitist.

I have read many accounts on the nature of withdrawals from people who have done BOTH tea and heroin, and their conclusions are the same - that tea withdrawal is worse - mainly because it lasts longer.

I have also read many accounts of strictly heroin users who say that heroin withdrawal is the worst because it's so intense.

See the logic to my conclusion here? One group has tried both, and one hasn't.

Heroin elitism

As always happens, a good thread gets turned into a stupid fucking argument. Filled with "My drug is better" egofied ..fried.. crap

Apologies to anyone else who feels this way about the direction the thread took, but as someone else pointed out, people should realize that pod tea isn't like somking cannabis; if you do it on a daily basis for a week or more, you will get nasty WD symptoms when you stop. The (main) drug you are taking orally is morphine, and regardless of the route of administration, it will produce "classic" opiate WD.

I've had arguements with heroin users before (only face to face), and in my experience, only heavy cocaine users are more likely to argue a point that anyone else listening in can obviously see is incorrect. I don't know what it is about those two drugs than can produce people who are unable to concede that they are incorrect in the face of facts pointing to the opposite.

I also apologize for making it look like I've gone out of my road to make someone look foolish or arrogent, but sometimes it's the only way to get a point across (then again, some just walk away mumbling "you're so wrong", but in those cases, that's the best you can hope for)

MGS
This is just speculation, but it might be possible that one or more of the other alkaloids in pod tea is competing with morphine in the metabolic pathway for elimination (ie conjugation with glucuronic acid), thereby increasing the plasma half life of the morphine

my monthly codeine withdrawl thread... (pls help)

Okay, sorry to bog up the forum with such a weak opiod user, but im trying to keep it under control.

(im talkin about 10/325 btw)

I averaged maybe 3-4 a day for 2 weeks, before that i had 1 1/2 week off with withdrawls. I never did get back to like 6 or 7 a day, like i had last time. My tolerence always(?) goes back to around the same spot. if i don't get over 4 pills a day, it always seems to rebound within 1 1/2 weeks.

so here is where we are.
i knew i had to save 7 or 8 for the a plane ride ( i love noddin on the plane) and for this too work, i gotta #1 get my tolerence down, and #2 not eat the last 7 or 8 norco's i got.

i stopped my use 2 days ago. I had been withdrawling mildly (headache, coldsweats, loose stool etc.) but they didn't compare to the first withdrawls i had ever had. ( this is my 2nd time to wd ever). At this point, i realized i had mis counted my codeine and i had 10. I was feeling misserable and it had snowed 5 inches and the cold sweats were almost owning me, so i ate 2 of them. Mind you, this is not enough to get me high, just get me back on a level where i want to live (eg talk to people, leave the house etc.)

My questions are:
Is this off and on codeine use eventually gonna build my tolerence?
Can opiates even be used to 'taper' off? ( i don't have anymore, so im not too worried about relapseing into my old ways)
did i just postpone my withdrawls?
are they gonna come back worse?

keep in mind, i don't have any access to opiods and the only reason i ate 2 was, to ward off wds, and i just so happened to go to my hiding spot away from my house to grab 50 bucks, and i HONESTLY forget i hid my codeine there. I have NO desire to eat ANYTHING more powerful than hydros. I know this all sounds stereotypical of an opiad user/abuser, but how does this bounce off all you EXTREMLY experinced types.

thanks

in retrospect, i should have eaten one and see if it helped then eaten another.

Interesting! I would love to know if any studies have been done on oral opium pharmacology since the technology has been there to really study things like the half-life of different Papaver Somniferium alkaloids, as well as specific receptor affinities on the various alkaloids. I can't even find any abstracts that would be related to the topic

Not again...

Well you are in luck because I referenced two studies that do just that...check for an earlier post, although you did not seem too interested about it then.

"A good thread...etc...etc..." That has to be one of the more inane posts in an even more inane thread...Egotism would be someone saying "that you cannot dream of challenging my position because I was working on my PHD when you were still on the teat"...not countering with peer reviewed studies. Grow up. What you see as some bickering, piddling argument is actually people trying [albeit some harder than others] to come to a definitive answer that effects a real persons health and life.

Elitism...Hmmm...One offers scientific studies that shore up ones contention and people somehow see that as one is somehow implying that one substance is superior? First it was not enough subjective proof ["hundreds of people on Poppies.org,etc"], for which I countered that I in fact possesed a lifetime [literally] of subjective experience with tea and 25 years of experience with heroin...Then I was accused of having drank "bunk" tea...No matter what is said or done nothing will change in this thread. I offered proof, challenged people to offer proof countering my contention and then I was criticized for not offering "hyper links." Please, you have to be joking.

If anyone really cares about the issue at hand they should actually research it and then add something of value.
