๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ Social ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ Gibberings ver. CCXIX - "what's new, c*nty chops?"

I've just brought in my chilli plants due to the weather. Got some sexy looking little chilli plants full of fruit that's about to ripen, full of seeds for more fun. Gotta love chillies!
After the almost total failure of my first attempt at growing hens and chicks (papaver somniferum) poppies this year (i got a total of 3 tiny pods!), I tried to get my 2nd batch grown this year before the daylight started giving out. They need / like at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. Fat chance of that now.

Gutted that I just seem to have narrowly missed the window. They were really doing very well at one point, but a second one has definitely died today. I dont think the remainder will make it either now.

At least I figured out many things out about how to get them to grow well and avoid getting eaten by slugs. Well, I watched some YOu Tube videos about how best to nourish them and found out that slugs are nocturnal, so it just means bringing the pots in every night, or just growing them indoors throughout as this works fine too, and feeeding the plants with the right foods at the right intervals.

But they are just starting to die off right at the exciting stage that they would have started developing pods stems, maybe even multiple pods per plant, if you get the first stages right, which I seemed to have done. Because they put on proper cabbage like growth with loads of thick and long leaves, which is a sign that they were on the right track.

I'll try again next year. March/April first batch. June / July 2nd.

There's local gardens near me that are neglected @Bleaney and they get a bumper crop every year. In some gardens they have huge plants growing out if cracks in the concrete!

Maybe you could try picking a few local places with optimal conditions and scatter a load of seeds? Of course then you have no control if someone like FUBAR walks by. Dunno, just spitballin'. It seems like you'd need a lot of pots for a decent crop, do you have a proper garden?

I used to do a lot of walking around back in the days and apart from gardens, poppys seem to do best in sandy soil, recently abandoned construction yards are a place that very often get poppies growing in them , basically any place that has no competing vegetation, lots of sun and a well drained soil .

Yeah I read they don't like competition or too much water too. I wonder what the biggest poppy field in the UK looks like...

I just have a small, but south facing back yard and 2 large south facing windows which all get the maximum amount of available sun.

I'm not going to get a big crop as things are currently, I mainly just want to try the hens and chicks variety to see if the seeds on sale actually have any active alkaloids in the pods. I heard they were a good / strong variety. I may only get enough pods for a small handful of treat brew ups per year. It's all just kind of an experimental / suck it and see, hobby type of thing, at this stage.

Hopefully at some point in the future I might move somewhere with a bigger and more private garden.

Hens and chicks seem to need additional fertilising to do well, so you couldn't really do 'guerilla gardening' with them very easily at all. Especially not in such a densley populated area as I live in currently.

Whatโ€™s up @F.U.B.A.R. ? You and @chinup both off staff? What will become of EADD!! ๐Ÿ™ƒ
it'll get by i'm sure.

i've had a severe relapse into cPTSD in a way which i didn't know was possible, then when i got better it changed my perspective on some shit that's been going on here (coupled with taking advice to do some fact finding about a particular issue), i wasn't satisfied with the resolution and burnt my bridges o the way out.

have also been relentlessly colonised by shitty microbes (NOT covid) and its had me on my arse. luckily getting well just in time to go on holiday. how are you?

Also that mourn porn that was the queens death made me sick in my mouth several times. Fucking flag shaggersโ€ฆ insufferable!
it annoyed me that we didn't stop and pause to think about whether we should have a monarchy. i thought ma'ams death would be the time, instead we went straight to 'king charles.'

mate it was a while back and now in the previous gibberings thread but did you see the pic i posted of some random garden full of poppies, in their front garden no attempt at hiding. only problem with lack of privacy is ingrates might rob you but they're more likely to take your catalytic converter or something.

Yes I saw that pic and remember it well. I'm not sure if anyone would attempt to grow proper opium poppies so brazenly. They might do, but I wouldnt, but then again, unfortunately I have a very nosey/gossipy/anti-drug neighbour on one side who has figured out some of my activities for reasons I cant go into right now. She doesn't miss much. It means that I am taking a bit of a risk even growing a small crop if someone twigs what it is and grasses me up.

I am interested in plants / gardening anyway though, and I have a lot of random stuff growing, so I guess the poppies don't stand out that much and if the plod ever did called out maybe I could reasonably claim that I am growing them as part of my interest in plants and gardening. And due to this hopefully my few poppies may never raise any suspicion or anything untowards.

I guess with the royalty thing if Charles had been a totally unsuitable person to become king all the debates might have happened beforehand. But he'll probably be a safe pair of hands, as will William and Kate afterwards, (they may well be very well liked indeed) so I can't see any radical changes happening for many decades to come regarding the upcoming successions.

The good thing about not growing them in pots is that they grow like weeds and you can reasonably claim they just migrated into your garden from hedgehog shit or something...
Also they're not at all illegal until you've clearly prepared them for use. "Poppy straw" is a class A I think, but I please noone take this as gospel, I could be totally wrong.

Yeah I was forgetting that bit, but that's probably the most important point, as its not going to be easy for any L.E. to catch anyone preparing their pods for use. They'd have to be quick for a start, and they'd also have to know exactly when it was going to happen, as there is such a short window of time that the preparing would happen in. And that sounds more or less impossible.

(I hope I haven't crossed any lines with what is allowed to be said on here. I guess it's getting close to borderline)

I used buy dried pods in bulk on ebay back in the days of yore

Basically free - nasty earthy tea that made me chill

Here in the Netherlands they sell fresh giganteum pods and hens and chicks at the florist for bargain prices every year in june, july .

My preferred method of consumption would be throwing them in the blender with half a litre of white grapefruit juice and turn it into a delicious bitter green smoothie.
