it is still the same damn thing.

i do agree provoking the conversation about it is good, but i think this thread just seemed to be a fun discussion of something more simple. but you may be right, and i may be quite wrong.

i disagree. the former says, essentially you're all wrong whereas the latter says i'm wrong*. that's the crux i think :)

That's a tricky one. Schindler's List wasn't meant to be great entertainment. But it's still an amazing acheivement in its own right.

Citizen Kane fairly deserves it's status. The movie was a breakthrough on so many levels. I believe that it is as close to a perfect movie as you can get. It was a fusion of talent on all fronts, and it inspired a whole new generation of writers, directors, cinematographers et all.

For those that either didn't like it or didn't get it, rent the DVD with the commentary by Roger Ebert. He dissects the movie for what it truly is... a masterpiece.
 
I forgot about titanic.. 3 hours of painful watching indeed
 
I agree that Titanic used to be overrated. IMO most people these days seem to UNDERRATE it, making it out to be a complete piece of trash, but it's gotta be far better than say the latter three Star Wars films (all pure junk IMO). I hate DiCaprio as much as the next guy & probably more, but it's just not that bad a film. Damn, when will people stop with the Black & White sh*t, life is not so simple.

Despite the fact that I have Godfather, Godfather II, and Goodfellas ranked as my third, fourth and tenth favorite movies of all time, respectively, I can see your point about the how romanticized they are, and as such, while I disagree with your overall assessment that they're "overrated," I would rate AT LEAST ten (and probably closer to twenty) Sopranos episodes above all three of those mob movies EVEN AS STAND-ALONES because the characters in The Sopranos are three dimensional and vulnerable.

And, in my opinion, the Godfather saga is ranked so highly by the general population, not so much because of the scripts or the subject matter, but rather because of the out-of-this-world acting by Brando in Godfather and by DeNiro in II.

Without exaggeration, those two performances are arguably the respective best pieces of acting by the two greatest American actors of the past half-century.

I understand where you're coming from, but I don't think anyone is intending on drawing up any kind of authoritive list of overrated movies. It's all just opinion and a bit of fun.

Just a few thoughts on the titles mentioned by others so far...

Raging Bull and Taxi Driver - I love Scorsese, but these two, plus The Departed, would have to be at the bottom of my Scorsese list of favourites (out of the 12 i've seen). I actually like Taxi Driver, but just can't get anything from Raging Bull or The Departed, both of which i've seen twice.

Citizen Kane - While I can appreciate it's influence on cinema, I can't say I liked this film. I have listened to Ebert's commentary and was quite impressed by some of the things he pointed out, but I still feel the same. There are a few old fashioned films I can dig, but this isn't one of them.

Casablanca - I'm going to give this another go in the near future, but my first viewing didn't do much for me. However, I loved the scene with the defiant singing of La Marseillaise. That was spine-tingling.

American Beauty - Used to love it. Watched it again recently and can't believe how much my opinion has changed. I think it's quite a poor movie and can't even appreciate Spacey's performance anymore.

Haha, I love it and i'm not tied to the 70s in any way. I don't know, I think it's a fun flick with catchy tunes. Maybe a lot of it has to do with the fact that I grew up loving it, along with a few other musicals. I only recently saw The Rocky Horror Picture Show and apart from Time Warp, I thought it was boring as hell.

You know, i've been meaning to ask others about this, but does anyone else think there's quite a bit of black humour laced into Schindler's List? Maybe it's just me, but Spielberg has shown he has a nasty sense of humour in the past.

My nominations...

The Searchers - After working my way through Leone's Westerns, Butchy Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Hang 'Em High, and Unforgiven, I was very disappointed by The Searchers. It didn't engage me at all.

Bonnie and Clyde - I enjoyed this about as much as Natural Born Killers, which isn't much at all.

American Graffiti - Perhaps a generational thing. As far as "teen flicks" go, this one doesn't touch Dazed and Confused or Fast Times at Ridgemont High
 
Rosemary's Baby - I couldn't watch it. Really slow pace...the idea is interesting, but just didn't come out well...the old neighbours were aggravating. It seemed pretty much entrenched in the time that it was made. How did they get the money for the new apartment?

Network - Not really interesting. I watched it. Great cast. But a classic? Notsomuch... I think the China Syndrome is a better movie in terms of criticizing news media.

Rocky - Um...Stallone? Need I say more? A definite love or hate movie series...

The Deer Hunter - Its long and not really De Niro's best role. Walken was pretty good. And not the best Vietnam flick by far.

Apoclypse Now - I'd say isn't overrated. It's on the same level with putting down Star Wars (I don't particularly like Star Wars just because of the amount of fandom people have adopted over it)...the special effects were miles ahead of anything else at the time.

I heard the funniest story on another forums board of a guy who took his girlfriend to see Titanic.

Anyways late in the movie when the ship is about to sink there's a girl sitting a couple of rows back crying when she loudly exclaims "Oh my god! The ship's sinking!!!"

Everyone who heard pisses themselves laughing. :D
