It feels vaguely wrong to side with 1kWords, but I have to agree that at least drinkers get a guaranteed buzz out of their drinking. Gambling is a waste of money by definition - if gamblers didn't lose more than they won then pokies/casinos etc. wouldn't make a profit and would cease to exist. It's just throwing your own money away to make rich people richer and I've never understood why people do it. I mean yeah, it's their money, but if they're going to waste it, they might as well just burn it and at least not feed it to our plutocratic overlords.
 
Dont get me wrong - i dont gamble, or get a kick out of gambling and am fucking delighted that we dont have pubs full of pokies in WA.

By law pokie machines are set to only pay out 20%. That is for every $100 you put in, $80 is kept by the government in tax and a small fee to the club. So if you happen to win $2000 it means that many more poor bastards have to pay in $8000. It is a totally selfish pursuit and the longer you play them, the more you are are statistically likely to to lose not win.

I have never said I was the man, I'm just a man. I have money sure, but it's not like I don't earn it. I simply don't shirk hard work and have never been one for excuses.
 
My doctor prescribes oxy's. He doesn't bulk bill but the flip side is the riff raft in the reception area is kept to a minimum and the magazines are always up to date.

I have often wondered why they don'y release a video game like Street Fighter that is actually fun to play and lets you wager money when you fight opponents. At least then it has an element of skill involved. It wouldn't be any different to people betting money while playing pool

I think gambling for some people is the lesser of two evils. If your an ex alcoholic on the verge of getting cancer of the liver playing the pokies would be the better option

Not if you end up gambling away the rent. It's literally pissing money up against the wall, I'm sorry but it just makes no sense to me. Even if you have money to spare, there are so many things you could spend it on that would actually provide short term pleasure or long term value. Gambling is just throwing your money off a cliff and then being excited when a few of the notes are blown back towards you by the wind.
 
The stock market is a much better punt but poor people want instant gratification with flashing lights when you win, a free coke and 2 for one entry into the Bain Marie
