What can you do?
This a harm minimisation website, and online mshroom ID's (whilst being dodgy and hardly accurate) are probably doing more good than bad at the moment.
If a person is going to go out and pick without doing any research, post for an ID and then ignore the warnings that come back, then that person deserves the shit they bring upon themselves. That just proves that even without having posted here, ID or no, they would have eaten their supposed "magic" mushrooms.
Two mates and I blundered off into the bush 3 years ago with a belly full of MDMA and literally no knowledge of psilocybe mushies to find the "magic ones". We ID'd them based on what we had bought of DD's before (Mushed, wet, black tiny looking mushrooms 8)). 8 hours later I was in an expensive ambulance and spent the night in emergency.
I feel having been hunting successfully several times now, that I am quite comfortable with eating what I have picked. This is only because I have listened to what everybody here has had to say re: bruising, habitat, spore prints and spending hours researching and reading everything I could find on the net. I am extremely cautious now after having my bad experience and will not hesitate to throw a mushroom out if I have the slightest inkling of doubt in regards to it's authenticity. I have learnt MY lesson.
But the fact remains inexperienced people WILL pick. That passion and thirst for the mushie trip will compell them no matter what. I think the best we can do is try and reduce the likelihood of somebody getting hurt.
That's just my 2 cents. . .
Oh and I'm going picking again tomorrow, got a new spot all lined up
