Critics aren't going to know what to do with the popular response to "The Purge", and I'm eager to see the analysis.
I think critics already understand that cheap horror movies with a silly gimmick = success.

The plot wasn't important.
I didn't like the movie, though. Felt kinda ho-hum to me.
The Butterfly Effect
I just saw this flick and was very impressed; I'm probably biased, though, by seeing the director's cut, which general opinion seems to indicate is superior to the theatrical version. Dark, depressing, yet--IMO--cathartic in its own way. I think this flick would've done better with critics if they'd ditched Kutcher and had the balls to go with the original ending.
Would give it 3 1/2, but felt it was safer to round down to a solid three with only four stars (that's in the other thread that I didn't feel like bumping after 8 years).

^ What do you mean it wasn't clear? JGL was already a bad ass gunslinger-type in the past, so obviously his future self would only become more bad ass.
How Bruce Willis became such a badass was rather unclear & didn't flow well IME, but otherwise I liked it a lot. It was a great mix of drama & action. Joseph Gordon-Levitt's wardrobe was spectacular, and the dystopian future was done nicely--always a favourite of mine.
