watched anchorman on free tv. thinking about how the next is basically made. ....not as funny as i remember. :\
 
that's because like a million movies copied off it's style of random and nonsensical humor in the years following and more or less killed that style of movie IMO

and like 95% of them starred Will Ferrell

anchorman was definitely the high point of his career if I don't say so myself
 
yeah i missed most of those "adults acting like infants" movies. i could tell from the trailers they were all basically the same thing.

I watched it last night and it was disappointing. I like Luke Evans and he was good in this, but the dialogue was terrible. This was the first movie I've seen Adelaide Clemens, aka Michelle Williams's clone in. If this movie is an indication of her acting skills, then I hope it's the last movie I see her in. Yikes. It had some decent gore effects and some fun action sequences, but I wouldn't recommend watching unless there's absolutely nothing else on and you've already trimmed your toenails and cleaned out from under the fridge.
 
Pacific rimjob. A million times better than all three transformers but a million times worse than monsters (2010). It was an excellent sfx show off reel, but I would have completely changed up the middle part. Less cheesy martial arts and more psychological bonding.
 
Hot Tub Time Machine.

Hilarious, and much better than I expected. Nothing more or less than a raunchy comedy that hits all the right spots and has a cast with perfect chemistry, though Robert Corddry steals every scene he's in.
 
Pacific Rim - It wasn't bad really. I went in with sort of a B movie level expectation. Idris Elba and Ron Perlman stole the show. Its a high calibre popcorn muncher. 8/10. Oh the bass is cranked in the theatre when I went, made the whole room shake.

Poultrygeist - A fast food chicken restaurant sets up shop on the old Tromahawk Indian burial ground, leading to protests from the Collegiate Lesbians Against Mega-Conglomerations (C.L.A.M.).

Basically, I don't even know what to say about this movie other than that it's brilliant and that I loved every second of complete bat-shit insanity. The movie was made by Lloyd Kaufman and the guys at Troma (The Toxic Avenger series and about 1,000,000 others) and is a crazy amalgamation of every B-movie trope ever created and disgusting, over-the-top gore and violence - but the thing that makes it work is the surprisingly clever writing and the film's obvious self-awareness. It was originally meant to be a musical, and while it does have a few (totally horrendous) musical numbers, the premise is abandoned entirely about half way through the film.

Poultrygeist is awesome, disgusting, offensive, clever, stupid, sexy, ugly and completely hilarious - it's one of those movies that revels in pure, unfiltered hedonism. I have never enjoyed Troma films but this one is special - after about 30 years of making the lowest-quality movies on the planet, they finally managed to channel their wealth of experience into a film which is not only worthwhile, but downright impressive. I loved everything about it (even the fucking terrible music).

i've been terrible about keeping up with this thread and am many movies behind.

Manhattan
i'd been putting this off because netflix has it listed as starring diane keaton. she's in it, but so is this girl named mariel hemingway--a solid older baby brooke knockoff. i'd say woody allen had been reading some nabokov. especially with the protagonist mentioning to mariel's character that their relationship could have a negative impact on her exploratory phase. the movie is pretty. the dialogue is quick and sometimes clever. it's a pretty standard woody allen movie. the ending reminds me of Lolita too. woody's character grabbing at something that isn't his anymore because of that very reason.

Dirty Girl
being on netflix with such a salacious title and cover was off-putting. then i noticed it stars juno temple, the girl from Kaboom--which is also on instant. Kaboom is better; that's about all i remember. and that Dirty Girl should not be dismissed as B-movie, netflix softcore. i don't even think you see her boobs.

because it stars parker posey. i've seen two movies involving marketing and starring parker posey this month! i have to get home from work and check my viewing history to remember the other. there is nothing remarkable about this movie--besides parker. i think it's trying to break down what individuals in and society as a whole values, as opposed to being a lighter take on Idiocracy. by "i think" i don't mean i am struggling with my interpretation; i mean i don't really remember much in the way of specifics other than that there are characters that are affected by how much and of what they put into their careers versus their interpersonal interactions.
 
i figured out the other parker posey movie.

Price Check
i think i found someone in this movie somewhat relatable. or maybe i found the concept of struggling with a career path relatable. i'm sure i liked parker posey's character. i'm having a really hard time holding it separate in my head from And Now a Word from Our Sponsor. reading the plot on wikipedia is making it even harder. i guess this movie also deals with values relating to work and family. it is quieter. leans more on romance. kind of has that churned out indie romance feel.

The Artist
this had been on my list for a while. i rented it a long time ago, watched it once too drunk to count it, and then let it sit around until a couple weeks ago. i knew from my intoxicated viewing that it was nothing amazing, so i was not really let down when i got around to watching it sober. there isn't anything special about this movie. the plot is common. there isn't anything unique about the film's feel. its scene of sound pales in comparison to La jetee's scene of movement. a dull People on Sunday.
 
Dark Days

does a great job of the grainy, gritty B&W. like Pi. i'd say the subject matter compliments this feel. that the aura trumps the story. which is impressive as the the story is of an underground society. shots are chosen to create this atmosphere, not to be revealing. the ending cracks me up. all about dropping out until there's another option. i'm ok with where the documentary leaves things. no point in following up or questioning the longevity of the solution. they got enough film to edit something murky and fascinating with with an ending.
