What are you munching on? v. gimmie toblerone n' beetroot

That is damn healthy for you, though sounded lush Shams.

I got hold of this strange creature - a basa by all accounts and thankfully it was gutted and filleted. It looks meaty.

Going to go all seaside n' traditional and do fish and chips, homemade tartar sauce since i need to do something with that enormous jar of capers.

Usual bloody garden salad on the side and maybe some frozen peas.

Will get on with that right now - famished.

The good people of Tesco's did. Har har. I might spice it up with something from the cupboard.

i know, i know, i know I'm a fish snob, but these are not good fish to eat.

they taste good I imagine, as they being heavily marketed here now. Some chippies and supermarkets sell them as river cobbler, some chippies sell them as cod or haddock, seriously :o

farmed in SE Asia, just as tiger prawns did the farming methods are causing major harm in the river and tributary systems over there.

and everything I always bang on about farmed fish holds true, 10kgs of wild fish makes enough feed for 1kg of final fish product, supertrawlwrs are clearing the oceans of baitfish to feed our appetite for farmed fish, endangering wild fish stocks (regardless of quota systems) and endangering puffin and other wild bird stocks.

sorry kate, this not personal, well to me it is, but not directed against you i mean..... i am very fussy about fish.....

a lot of the meat i eat is probably very unethically produced (I *try* to make sure its not), but fish is my soapbox.

EDIT>>>>>>>>>>HOMEMADE TARTARE SAUCE IS A MUST!!!!! lOVE THE STUFF, CAN EAT LOADS OF IT!!!!!!

just eaten 2 tins of anchovies fillets... nice, but just noticed how salty these things are, crazy amount of salt

Tell us how to make it then ;) The MM way.

I'm sure kate makes excellent tartare sauce herself.

Mayo (homemade if you got time, otherwise bought one :( )
chop a load of capers, gherkins, and flat leaf parsley into a really fine chopped mulch.
chop a couple of hard boiled eggs, again, very fine dice.
mix it all up.

salt, pepper, lemon juice..

how the fuck have you only just noticed how salty tinned anchovy is?i???? you been eating it for weeks now?

it is salt cured, fermented and packed in olive oil. course they're fucking salty.

you just about missed fresh anchovy season down here now. get on it next year...oct/nov, the sprat boats catch shitloads of anchovies. right through to early spring.

Have to admit, I'm now salivating.

ive eaten them a few times, knew they were salty, just not that salty, a gram of salt per 2, fuck eating anymore of these things

Anchovies are about the saltiest thing known to mankind besides salt itself (and arguably capers). I don't know how you could ever stomach to eat them from the fucking can.

MamaShambles gave me a few jars of anchovies in chili/olive oil at the same time she gave me that ubertin of pizza topping. They certainly are somewhat salty. Even saltier than I remember them being. Bordering on inedible, in fact :\

Was very fond of Gentleman's Relish (as in Patum Peperium not posh bloke's spunk) as a nipper though so presumably do like anchovies. Just not these particular ones.

Also, boiled egg in tartare sauce is just plain wrong :|

Boiled egg is wrong in general though so may just be a personal thing...

I practically grew up on my dad's infinite supply of Patum Peperium as a kid. Beautiful on toast! But not too much :sus: Many a ruined slice in my youth.

I feel really awful now for buying it and now cooking it. Yes it was v. tasty, I crumbed it. Did wonder why it was such a good buy at morrison's fish counter, now i know why :(

I will stick to me farmed salmon from now on :\

I'm kinda pissed off that I live minutes from the sea on an island and i can't buy affordable fucking fish. wtf

When it comes to meat I'm lucky as a local farm produces and kills for a local market - its decent, uber fresh and not as expensive as you'd think. Anyone is free to go and visit the farm, abattoir and butcher shop behind the scenes. The queues say a lot.

But this fish / seafood malarkey is doing my head in - what am I supposed to do - not eat fish?

Btw: my tartar sauce was epic %)

Me granddad was the fan in my family, Alby. Was a bit of a treat when I used to stay down with 'em over the summer as a nipper. Transgenerational bonding over poncy fish paste spread uberthin on hot, buttered toast. Yum <3

don't feel fucking awful kate, sounds like your meat is much better sourced and from happier animals than mine is generally....got good friend does pork, bacon, sausages....lamb is generally happy and well treated anyway, and there's a few good beef farmers round here, BUT, we do get supermarket shite sometimes....

You must know a local fisherman kate, I've said to you before...where is the fish landed near you? Just go and find out when the boats come in, there will be day boats catching mixed species that will have different stuff every day, for sure there will be crabbers by you.....just chat to one for a bit (plmp tht cleavage up first) and they be happy to sell to you for more than they sell to the fishmongers or restaurants, but less than you'd pay
for shite from suprmatreket...

and you should be able to collect cockles and winkles and mussels easy enough up there.

Or start fishing, its a piace of piss, specially inshore up there, the ground is so rcky the trawlers can't rape it for everything its got
