Underground Hip Hop

Hi TangerinO, welcome to bluelight. :)

I ran a lil' search and found another thread which might interest you, so I merged the two. :)

I laugh my ass off at some of what peeps are saying here....

where's the ground to be under?

If we are all talking about it... u know..... I'm just kiddng

Back in the day.... niggaz wanted to be the best RAPPER... rapping is what an MC does....

now a days, there has to be a distinction between the "RAP GAME" and "Hip-Hop"

Fuck the game.... cause that's all it is... "Hip-Hop" is a culture, a REAL way of expression...

"R.E.A.L. meaning 'Rhymes Equal Actual Life'" (KRS One)

So fuck the Rap Game

Nice, thank you Tribal :) It interests me greatly :D

Also I'm actually from Australia, Canberra to be exact, but lately have been getting into hip hop from all over the world. Rhyme Asylum have just specifically caught my eye. Poison Penmanship, a track by them, is probably my favourite verse I've ever heard and I've been listening to hip hop for years now.

Killah - motha fuckin' - Priest

HE KILLS EVERYTHING.... 12 solo albums since 2003.... His first album, "Heavy Mental" is a timeless classic... you will see

2001-2003 his own stuff was nice, but he was hain' troubless with the Wu management and what not...

When he came back with "The Offering" in 2007 (Another timeless classic) he was tight with all Wu nation and BROUGHT THE PRIESTHOOD

He was a new man... he will be the first to say it...

And during the time before that he was doing HRSMN, Macabeez, Black Market....

The dudes he is collabin' with ARE OFF THE FUCKING CHIZZLE

not to mention collaboration with "The Horsemen" (Canibus, Kurupt and Ras Kass)

The Macabeez, ALmighty, Black Market Militia, Sunz of MAn

And MAD guest appearances....

PEEP ALL THAT SHIT

then tell me whats underground

I'll leave you with this:

This is an aside,
but does anyone dig how certain rappers,
regardless of being serious mainstream sellers,
will ALWAYS manage to sound underground
in a mix, particularly if the rest of the mix is
predominately instrumental tracks or (!) electronica?

I guess that is (one part of the Gnjus that is...) Kool Keith's appeal.

"I collaborate with so many people."

"Who do you like to work with?" I asked in my awkwardly patronising way.

"I like rock bands, they just come in and let you do what you want to do. They just hand you an envelope and smoke weed and roll up a bong…"

Kurt cut in: "Did you just say roll up a bong?”

"Yeah," continued Keith,
ignoring him,
"they just roll they things and let you do what you want.
I work with some producers and they want me to conform to the project. A lot of these artists have requests, they want me to rap about a leaf for the whole song. These rock bands pay me out the ass, like ten grand and I can rap about my ass or taking a shit and they like it."

Fo' sho.
I'd like to get a list together.
It probably is one of the best indications
of whether a rapper actually is *nebulous term* underground...
I'mean,
if they can pull off sounding underground while
selling through the roof.

Ahhhhh. Shit. I've been real big into the whole Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All crew recently.

http://www.oddfuture.com

You can download all the group's albums, which have all been released in 2010, except for one mixtape in 2008(?). Check out Earl Sweatshirt's Earl, Tyler's Bastard, and Domo Genesis' Rolling Papers.

Overly talented teenage kids from Cali. The beats are fucking sick, the rhymes are charmingly adolescent, yet flawless, and it flows like swag.

Earl's rapping is all over the place. Topics such as rape, coke, underage driving, and killing cops come across less vile than they do like fantasy. It's really something to behold.

Top songs I'm digging from the crew at the mo'.
Tyler, The Creator - Splatter
Tyler, The Creator - French
Earl's Sweatshirt - Earl
Earl's Sweatshirt - Luper
Earl's Sweatshirt - Couch
Domo Genesis - Super Market
