Opioids Trouble Peeing on Opiates: Urinary retention issues Q&A Megathread

lol "ass baby"!
ive been on subs for nearly 2 years now and STILL wouldn't "go" for up to 14 days if i didn't take laxatives every week! between the bupe & the stimulants all day every day i barely ever pee at all.

lol, yea...i would get so anxious after 5 days of nothing comming, then 6,7, 8 days...I would really get scared sometimes. I ate alot of lax.

I have found pods to be the worst for urinary retention. Oxies get me too, but I can always go on oxies, though it may take a while. On pods, sometimes I try for a half hour and don't go. I am bladder shy to begin with, so opiates only make that worse. This is my routine though, lol. Everyone seems to have figured some weird technique that helps them go. This is mine:

Phase 1: attempt to go normally (usually fails).
Phase 2: Turn on warm water and cup my hand to catch some, then dump it on my dick (make sure it's not too warm...)
Phase 3: Get a washrag wet with warm water and press it firmly against the perineum (the area between your ass and your balls). This step usually helps alot.
Phase 3: Fill up bath tub with hot water.

This is where my technique beats all yours to hell when it comes to funniness...

Sit down in tub until you feel like your about to pee (as we all know, feeling like your going to pee doesn't guarantee anything... haha) stand up and then try to let yourself pee.

My one last weapon against this beast is to alternate between the bathtub sit down standup technique and getting out of the tub and splashing cold water on your feet and dick.. then get back in the tub and try again...

That said, there are times when your dick has just made up it's mind that it aint goin to go pee. Best thing to do in these situations is just try to catch a nod for a while and try again when you feel it start to wear off a bit.

Oh yea, sorry for switching the instructions from 1st person to 2nd person... I just don't feel like fixing it haha.

Anyone know of any pharmacological solutions to this? Herbal?
Some say diuretics like caffeine, but all caffeine does to me is make me wanna go more but I'm still unable to.

This is especially a problem with pod tea because your drinking liquid that your going to have to piss out, plus pod tea lasts for so long. The first time I tried pods I thought I was going to have to get catheterized at the ER... Luckily, I was able to squeeze out a few drops to reduce the pain and urgency for a little.

Does anyone know if you develop a tolerance to the urinary retention effect of pod tea before you get a tolerance to the euphoric/analgesic effects? I group euphoria and analgesia together because I find that my physical pain will not go away unless I am also experiencing at least a mild euphoria. Supposedly one of the key areas that opiates act is in the nucleus accumbens. I think that the euphoric effects are extremely important because by inducing pleasure in this area, you also block out painful signals.

Has anyone else experienced this? I mean, that analgesia is partially a result of euphoria?

Anyways, my main question... Does anyone experience that tolerance to the urinary retentive effects of pod tea occurs prior to tolerance to euphoric/analgesic effects, like respiratory depression?

Poppy Pod Tea induced Urinary Retention

I know that there is a thread on this, but no one has answered the specific question I have. My question is this: Does a tolerance to the urinary effects of pod tea (or to the urinary effects of opiates in general) develop before tolerance to analgesic and euphoric effects?

My friend loves to drink PPT but always ends up not being able to piss for about 6 hours with a full bladder. He has only drank the tea on three occasions, and this has happened to him every time.

He doesn't have a very high tolerance (takes him about 20-40mg of hydrocodone to get analgesia and a decent buzz) so it may be just that his tolerance is not that high for opiates and the tea's side effects are more pronounced. He is hoping that as he continues to drink the tea, he will become tolerant to the urinary effects before he becomes tolerant to the analgesic and euphoric effects. He also notices that the retention is worse if he doses 1 day on, one day off, but aren't as bad i he has waited a week. I would imagine this is due to the long half-life of the morphine in pods.

Any information on this? Personal experience in dealing with a similar situation? Does anyone have any herbal/pharmacological solutions to this dilimna?

Please, you do not have to say "my friend". It just sounds wierd you are concerned about your friend needing to piss... :)
Urinary retention problems will probably stay around as long as constipating effects as a similar underlying mechanism is working... that is to say, it will take a lot less time for analgesic/euphoretic properties to dwindle rather than constipation/urinary retention

I kind of thought the same thing as you djsim about urinary problems staying around as long as constipating problems. However, I did just find a passage in a book about cancer symptom management that says urinary retention does go away usually within 24-48 hours of initiation of therapy.

I don't know about pod tea, but I was on oxy for a week after a hernia repair and at first it was a bit hard to take a piss, but about 2 days in to it I was pissing normal again, still constipated for the entire week though until I blew the cork with a bottle of milk of magnesium.

This is the book I mentioned...

Just pee before dosing you morons.

This don't work when you are dosing PPT. With PPT you have to forces working against you... First, you are drinking AT LEAST 8 ounces of water and that IS your dose. 16-24 ounces is probably a better estimate. Plus you have the fact that pod tea lasts for so long.

This is normally what happens to me on a morning of pod tea drinking. Wake up, make a 16 cup, drink it, chasing it with a sweet fruit juice (trying only to coat my mouth with it so that I don't add that to the liquid that will soon be in my bladder). I continue to go pee every 30 minutes to make sure I have a fairly empty bladder when the time comes that I just absoulutely cannot go anymore. Usually, 4 hours after this time, I am able to pee again, but it has taken up to twelve hours when I dosed on days to close together, not allowing for the last of the urinary retentive effects from 2 days ago's cup of tea to completely wear off.

Happy pissing, happy nodding, and happy pissing while nodding to all!

Is this a common side effect on Poppy Pod Tea? Could this retention cause damage to the urinary tract? Could the retention cause any pain or discomfort?

I don't know how common urinary retention is among poppy tea drinkers. I know I get it real bad, and others who have posted on various forums claim to have the same trouble. I doubt it's going to cause any damage to the urinary tract unless you are so affected that you can't go for like a day or something like that. The worst I ever had it was not being able to go pee before bed so i had to try sleeping with a full bladder. I woke up at 2 and then was able to start going a bit again. It can definitely cause discomfort, but I have never had pain from drinking pod tea. I was in the hospital once after a surgery on hydromorphone for two days and I was catheterized the whole time, then they wanted me to try to go on my own and i couldn't and they were slow to cath me again and by the time they finally did I was almost in tears it hurt so bad.

That's been my experience. I wish there was a better way to combat this urinary retention becuase it makes using pod tea for chronic pain less practical. I suppose a flomax prescription might help. I have heard that diuretics help, however, i am skeptical of this because it seems like diuretics would just make you have to go more, without actually relaxing the urethral sphincter.

I use poppy tea and get this bad. I've gotten it with oxy and heroin too obviously.

the tea makes it horrible because I really have to pee after drinking it, but sometimes ill be fucked up and not pee right away and wont be able to go for awhile. if i smoke weed it makes it even harder.

i get some discomfort when i finally go, and its not a steady stream. I cant control it and always stop for a second and then keep going. THIS FUCKING HURTS!!!!! and the more I do it the more it hurts. I've been thinking lately that this is going to cause some problems later in life but I dont really know. I just assume it would based on how it feels now.

Any time I'm taking high doses of any opiate I always have piss trouble. I just pop a squat on ye olde camode and ahh..
And drinking more water to try to make me pee easier just ends up making me feel like I have a baby in me, and I don't like that.

I always pee before dosing, but I end up having to go later.

Ya I have that problem myself.I find that in my case im a guy.If I sit down to pee and clear my head of thoughts it helps allot.

It happens to me a little, but I can really pee on even like 160mg oxy. It could take a minute and I really gotta force the shit but it starts going. Now Poppys really fuck me up worse then anything else when I gotta take a shit. It's real bad for that.

Doing alot of opiates? i just stood at the toliet for like 10 mins trying to pee ....lol.. I finally did it after running the water in the sink for awhile ....

Used to happen to me ALL the time..Sometimes I'd sit there for 20 minutes ..or more..sucks 8)

Ive abused opiates for about 3 years, and always had alot of trouble urinating, even when compared to my other junky friends.

The problem now is at night I get up 6-7 times to pee, all night long. Its not very much urine, but I get that feeling i HAVE to go, and cant go back to sleep until I do. Its caused me alot of lost sleep, its been doing it for about a year. Im hopefully going to have some insurance soon, so i hope i get to go to the doctor.

But has that happened to anyone before? And is there anything they can do for it? Ive seen those commercials for avodart, but thats for old men whos prostrates enlarged. I dono if that would help me. Im only 21, but has anyone heard of opiate urine retention messing up your system permanently? Its been going on for more then a year.

Any help would be appreciated.

Urinary retention is annoying, but I'm more worried about how it affects the kidneys/urinary tract. Since starting using opiates regularly about 3 years ago, I've had near constant kidney and bladder infections in addition to trouble peeing. I'm talking an infection every other month despite taking potent antibiotics like Levaquin and Macrobid and drinking a gallon of water every day or two.

I've seen questions online about whether opiates can cause kidney stones with no definitive answers. (My doc also suggested that stones might be contributing to my infections). It makes sense that, since stones are caused by built up minerals in the kidneys, urinary retention caused by opiates could speed their development. I also notice severe bloating/water retention when I have an infection, which makes fear reduced kidney function :( Hopefully not.

Anyone know about opiates and kidney stones/recurrent infections?

whoever said the longer you do opiates the easier it gets....so wrong. Like somebody else said too especially if i smoke weed on top of it ill be sitting there forever. the worst is when im there so long that my legs start to tingle and go numb and i have to stand up and move around to get the blood flowing again, or if i nod out and they go completely numb and i get to do the "i nodded out trying to piss now i cant feel my legs" stumble for a few minutes when i leave the bathroom.
