The vitamins and supplements MEGA THREAD.

Lately I have been takeing:
Green tea extract
Ginkgo biloba extract
Fish oil
Red Yeast Rice
Garlic

In the past I have had slightly high cholesterol and blood pressure. I haven't gotten blood work done lately, but my bp has dropped a good 15 points or so into a verry safe range since i've been takeing this coctail of extracts. This combo works well for me so far.. :) improved my labito too, I thank the ginkgo and fish oil for that prob which I believe was cholesterol related.

Herbs Research and Information

Background: I am 21 and I recently graduated with a b.s. in chemistry. I have always been very interested in medicine, but more specifically, alternative medicine. I am also fairly interested in drugs and pharmokinetics.

My question to the bluelight community is this: What books do you recommend I read in order to gain more information on herbs and their effects. I am looking for a book that is factual, that demonstrates studies, and goes into pharmokinetics. I imagine this would be hard to find, but I would very much appreciate if someone here with experience could point me in the right direction. Thanks!

Milk Thistlle: To help look after your Liver from drug and alcohol use?

"This herb is wonderful and appropriate for anyone who is under stress, uses alcohol, recreational drugs, prescription medications, or lives in today's modern times of pesticides, environmental toxins, and pollution&virtually every American."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milk_thistle

I'm mainly posting this, because i did use a few drugs, i was using mdma once every 40-60 days, ketamine once a week, sometimes more often, and i do take various herbs; Valerian, Papaver rhoeas as well as supplements.

Anyone else have any experience with this?

Ok so over the past few months I've really gotten into buying my vitamins pure because I used to buy Beyond Tangy Tangerine from Youngevity (I'm sure youve heard of it) It's a really high quality high reputation Vitamin/Nutrient/Amino acid complex.

The problem is I want to stock up and it's a little expensive and buying bulk pure vitamins is a lot cheaper. So I got myself a milligram scale and bought quite a few vitamins and am pretty much matching the vitamins I take with the doses that are in the Tangy Tangarine.

not so bad, Vitamin C 1000mgs a serving, riboflavin 30mgs, Vitamin A 3mgs(alittle low but do-able)

I only bought the vitamins that were active in doses measurable doses, Vitamin A being the most potent one other than Vitamin D-3 which i bought by accident before checking.

Vitamin D-3.. 750 IU a serving, equivalent to roughly 0.01Milligrams..!!! I actually bought this Vitamin in bulk too, i'm affriad to touch it, I might breathe in the mist and overdose lol, so I ended up wasting money and buying pre-capsuled ones.

But how are you supposed to use this pure? is there anyway? or is it useless to have it pure?

I just wrapped it up and put it away... far away for now, scared of it.

Sorry if this is a stupid question I'm not fluent in Vitamins hahahaha

Thanks everyone for any help!

Ever since I started using vitamins pure and weighing them out myself(Basing dosages off of a nutrition drink I used to use) People claim that my room smells like it, I smell funny, the bathroom smells after I've been in it, etc...

The vitamins i'm taking consists of:

Vitamin A 4MGS twice daily
Vitamin C 1000MGS twice daily
Vitamin B-1(Thiamine) 30MGS twice daily
Vitamin B-2(Riboflavin) 30MGS twice daily
Niacin 40MGS twice daily
Vitamin B-5 150MGS twice daily
Vitamin B-6 30MGS twice daily
Vitamin D-3 750IU twice daily(not pure, precapsuled)

Also on 3 difference occasions 2 separate people said I smell like Kraft Dinner and when I was getting a hair cut the hair cutter said it smells like burnt kraft dinner.

I don't know if this is the vitamins or not, but i don't see anything else it could possibly be, is this normal? should I be worried? is it a bad idea to take vitamins pure like this?

Thanks!!

Hey man, I'm interested in the same stuff, and agree that pharmokinetic-rich books on herbs can be harder to find than books on pharmaceutical drugs.

any of you guys sure know what your supplement contains trully ?

this is a problem going on for years in the dietary supplement industry of adultered, lots of toxins or much or less of the given ingredient and nobody cares to test tho.
found recently this site http://www.consumerlab.com/ but i cant sign yet because of a sense it might be a stupid scam site. i signed on another one called supplement review or something alike year ago and they did few reviews and the site wasnt updated for months and i didnt get my money's worth so i hope you understand how careful i am to sign again to any such site. reason i post this is for you people to help out here, any of you perhaps have tried this one or any other site to get most accurate review of a supplement available ? :\

^ how did that answer my question if the site consumerlab is reliable and good place to spend money on to check out reviews for the best supplements possible ? im not happy this thread was bumped into another, now i get responses of about 1 week time. but its ok, i will accept my fate as a slave here with no choice of matter.

I'm not happy that you keep thinking you get your own threads for everything, but I'll accept that it comes with the job.

It's probably my day at work speaking, so just disregard this message if you're getting unhappy about it.

Be patient; the one thread I created on progressive hearing loss didn't get a reply in it for four months.

bah you are too nice now. i was preparing a huge angry reply, but damn you ruined it. tnx for input i guess :s

So I have shockingly started to loose a huge amount of hair although Im only 22, and am planning to try some kind of supplement. What is recommended for uber hair loss? And is it harmful for your body? Ive heard these kinda of supplements can be damaging in the long run, but thats just one source of info.

I'm going to assume your a man and that you are experiencing male patter baldness, some don't experience it til their fifties, but an occasional person experiences it in late high school, If its male pattern baldness there are two drugs with pretty solid evidence they alleviate male pattern baldness. Propecia/Proscar/finasteride and rogaine/Minoxidil.

If its alopecia we are dealing with something pretty different.

As far as supplement or more "natural" remedies for male pattern baldness jojoba oil shampoo, saw palmetto, pumpkin seed, stinging nettle, etc, but I don't think they hold much promise.

There was a recent blurb in medical literature that male pattern baldness has been discovered to be heavily mediated by prostaglandin D-2 which makes me think the shampoos for dandruff that have salicylic acid at 2% or 3% could help mitigate male pattern baldness. There are a shit-ton of forums out there that are dedicated to info about combatting male pattern baldness and just like other sorts of forum it can be tough to try to sort the wheat from the chaff.

Have there been any health crises or poor nutrition lately that might better explain the hair loss than MPB?

Well, a whole lot of stress is all that comes in mind. I've had a lot of stuff going on inside my head as of late, so I am not surprised Im losing this much hair.

Thanks for the info. Ill memo it down

Ive switched from using topical glutathione to using liposomal gluathione and the new supplement im taking tastes like farts and has the consistency of semen.

I hate healthy living sometimes :(

I'm lucky enough to manage a vitamin/health food store which I'm sure many of you shop at but I won't mention it out of company policy, so I have the benefit of receiving a lot of supplements either for free from the 3rd party reps or at a hefty discount from the company just fyi before I get a "why are you wasting your money on so many supplements" reply lol. but my current regimen is:

Multivitamin/Multimineral- A time released, well formulated one, unlike Centrum which your body barely absorbs.

Vitamin B Complex- Mostly B-12, but includes a full spectrum of B-Vitamins for a natural energy increase.

Calcium/Vitamin D3- Strengthens your bones, helps prevent Osteoporosis

Fish Oil/Krill Oil- a must have for good over all health (good ones have at least 900mg combined DHA/EPA), also studies show it lowers bad cholesterol, helps maintain healthy BP levels, helps to prevent coronary heart disease and many cancers, and improves joint, brain, and skin health! ...also fyi when stored in the freezer it controls the fishy burps! :D

Milk Thistle- For good liver health, detoxifies your liver (which I'm sure most of us on this forum could all use)

Saw Palmetto- Prostate Health

Cranberry Extract- Urinary tract health, also helps detoxify the kidneys

L-Arginine- a non-essential amino acid that dilates the blood vessels, which helps lower blood pressure and improves overall health by circulating nutrients more efficiently.

L-Glutamine- another non-essential amino that is key for the immune system, also helps repair damaged muscle tissue after a hard workout, allowing for shorter recovery time.

Glucosamine/Chondroitin/Hyaluronic Acid- Helps joint health, prevents wear and tear from heavy lifting and relieves joint pain. (GNC's Triflex)

Antioxidant Blend- a blend of alpha-Lipoic acid, Green Tea Leaf Extract, Resveratrol, Lycopene, CoQ-10, and the extract powders from Acai, Bilberry, Elderberry, Blueberry, and Black Currant. Antioxidants are very important to prevent damage caused by free radicals in the body that cause cell breakdown, brain damage, cancer, premature-aging, etc.

Ginkgo Biloba/Huperzine A- For increased memory and brain function (which I need a lot of as I take a minimum of 40mg Diazepam a day, so I can be forgetful to say the least)

Those are all the supplements I take for my "Health", I also lift hard with free weights for 2 hours every other day, and try to do at least 30-60min of Cardio daily for which I take:

Whey Protein Isolate- I use 40g as soon as I wake up and 40g post-workout to keep my body in an anabolic state and for strength/mass gain. (MuscleTech's Nitro-Isolate 65)

Casein Protein- I use 30g 2 hours before a workout and 40g before bed to supply a steady flow of amino acids during sleep for my body, preventing muscle breakdown and preventing from going into a catabolic state. (without a slow digesting protein to supply amino acids, your body "starves" during an 8-hr sleep causing it to feed off of your muscles)
For casein protein powder I prefer Optimum Nutrion's 100% Casein. ON is a good brand that has been around for a years, and for good reason. They have quality products.

Creatine- I use 2g of Creatine Nitrate (Cellucor's C4) before my workout and 5g after my workout in the form of Creatine HCl and Creatine Monohydrate (MusclePharm's Creatine)

Arginine- Besides the aforementioned L-arginine, I take 1g A-AKG (cellucor's C-4) pre-workout and 2g Arginine Nitrate (Cellucor's NO3)

BCAA's- I take 3g pre-workout and 7g post-workout (Branch-Chained Amino Acids are Leucine, Isoleucine, and Valine) (MusclePharm's BCAA 3:1:1)

Androgenic/Anti-Aromatase- A blend of testosterone increasing supplements and estrogen/cortisol lowering ingredients (Cellucor's P3)

Caffeine/Taurine/Synephrine- Energy/Mental Focus and alertness blend (Cellucor's C4)

Has anyone tried the Omega Swirl fish oil product? Im in love with it. Full daily dose of EPA/DHA in the most delicious supplement juice ever! Just three teaspoons in with some greek yogurt and flax seed is like my new favorite breakfast. Sooooo good.

^^ That sounds awesome dude. What flavour is the fish oil supplement? I was taking fish oil capsules that had orange essential oil in them, so instead of fish burps, they tasted like vitamin C tablets =D
But then I switched to a fish oil concentrated liquid, with no flavouring, because it had a much higher EPA/DHA concentration per dose than the capsules. But I actually cannot stomach it. I swallow the dose, and about 10 minutes later it comes back up! Lame...

Anyway, I came in here to ask about people's opinion on the various "Hair, Nail and Skin" vitamin supplements on the market (one example). What are people's experience with them? Do they work well?
Recently my hair has been thinning out, and even though I've got a lot left to lose and am therefore not actually concerned, it'd still be nice to retain my usual hair thickness. My mum and 2 older sisters all experienced hair-thinning when they were about my age, so perhaps it's genetic/hormonal?? Supplements can be pretty damn expensive but I would be willing to give it a try if people have had good results...?
