The travel thread

Don't forget Durian ;)

They tend to eat it in Thailand before it gets quite as repulsive but Indonesia is apparently fantastic for uber stinking horrid durian. Had it in Sri Lanka a bit when it was nearly at its most foul. The family I was staying with would only prepare and eat it outside so as not to stink their house out =D

Yummy...custard sewage!

Another good website is http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml which allows you to search and book train journeys for all over Europe. Just stick your origin and destination in as well as date of travel and it'll tell you train times, changes etc.

Quite valuable.

RailSaver.com also quite good. Allows you to work out the prices of all your journeys over Europe and whether you'll be better value for money buying a Rail Pass or not.

http://www.interrailnet.com/ Book your Euro train passes here.

and that's just the start! :D

Hmmm I was going to book my flight with RyanAir now but they want to know whether I'll be checking a bag in or not which I don't know yet. I'm going to buy my rucksack tomorrow and load it up and see if it's the right weight etc, I bet if I wait until tomorrow these flight prices will rocket right up. :\

Can flights be booked on someone else card?

As if you wont be taking a bag?.. My suggestion is take a weeks worth of clothes and clean them once a week. My last trek I took 11kg, and still didn't use everything packed. My formula, 4 T-shirts, 4 shirts with collars (polo's or going out shirts), 2 jumpers, 1 jacket, 1 water proof jacket, 8 pairs of underwear same with socks, 2 trousers, 1 pair of trackies, a pair of cargos, 2 shorts, 2 pairs of shoes and a pair Flip Flops

As fair as I know you can book a card on someone elses card, cause the card holder is allowed to be different then the passenger

Spade, not sure if a 38litre rucksack will fit within their cabin baggage rules. Can you book your flight first, then add bags to the booking at a later date if you need to?

Some airlines make you present the card the flight was booked on when you check-in. It's meant to combat fraud.

Course I'll be taking a bag you nugget! :p

Just was hoping to take it on as carry on luggage but it'll just be over the size limit by 5cm so I best just check it in and pay the rip off fee of £12 to check a bag in!! As well as £4 to pay by card. 8o

Am I fuck taking as much clothes as that. And I'll be taking no dress shirts, shoes or any of that nonsense. If it doesn't involve wearing flip flops, shorts, t-shirt and hat I'm not interested. ;)

Can't afford to go out boozing anyway so not really any need for the dressing up gear. Any drinking can be done in dingy bars designed for skint as fuck backpackers like myself. :)

Jumpers? Jackets? Waterproof jackets? Pffft! No chance. I'll take a lightweight hooded top just incase it rains but no more. If I get wet I get wet. :\

2 pairs of shoes? What on earth for? I'll have trainers and flip flops. %)

Mate that wasn't much clothes at all.. and well the summer season is closer to the end then it is the middle. So being soaked is no fun and your bound to get the travellers cold/flu at some stage, so no point in making it worse. If you cant fit that much in a medium sized rug sack and under 15kg there is something wrong. Two pairs of shoes are for, one for trashing, one to keep half decent... Going out with a collar and a scottish accent will impress the chicks..

Lol, boozing will be half of the trip..

Mate I'm Scottish it rains here 365 days a year you should know that by now. Water never hurt anyone, bring it on! :D

You misunderstand me, I definitely could fit all that in a rucksack but I don't want to. I don't need that many clothes.

Boozing might be half of your trip but it won't be mines. I don't really booze much anymore, I don't enjoy getting drunk and I hate being hungover so much that I plan to never ever be hungover again. I can do without waking up feeling like shit when theres loads of stuff to be seeing and doing. :)

when you're backpacking, i believe you're allowed to buy clothes n stuff en route as required. i'm pretty sure most of them do that and there is no perfect packing list.

i don't think i could be fucked with backpacking. unless you could hire a motorbike and hand it back at the end. :)
