The travel thread

From my experience blagging upgrades rarely works - knowing someone at the airline is a sure-fire way of getting an upgrade / increased baggage allowance.

Having said that I've flown club and it was nice and all but not realy worth it if the flight is under 12 hours. Saying that I have no problems with sleeping in economy and a couple of glasses of wine and a few valium send me to dreamworld for as long as needed :D

#7 Thow your lonely fucking planet in the bin and go do some exploring on your own.

BA tried to tell offload us on the way back from Thailand at Xmas. We got there early as well and the guy at the desk gave us some bullshit about how the flight was overbooked and as we hadn't phoned to confirm our flights we weren't 'officially' on the flight which is total bollocks. The flights were booked as part of a holiday package through a travel agent. We told him there was no way we weren't going on that flight so he better sort it out or get his boss down here to sort it out asap. Funnily enough 2 seconds later 'oh that was lucky i've managed to get you on the flight, sorry about that'. Aye. :\

Even for 12hr flights i'm not sure it's really worth the cost. I mean it's extorinate. London to HK in club class is £3988 compared to £900 economy. Now club class is nice and it's a bit of a luxury but it's not worth an extra £3k, unless you're so rich that 3k is nothing I guess.

The amount of folk you see wandering around with their head buried in the LP guides is unreal. Fine, use it was a guide for some basic info but don't only do what the LP says and only go where it recommends. Half the fun is finding your own places to eat and drink etc, no point in using it like a be all and end all.

LP used to be good when it was an off the beaten track book, but its become mainstream now that all those things previously unheard of by package holiday people are now the regular thing to do

It's no longer aimed solely at Backpackers anyway, there target market is mostly young couples etc now.

The books are still decent for a bit of guidance and have some useful tips and info in but to use it like a bible is cheating yourself out of a proper travel experience.

I'm not saying I've had anything I'm commenting on the folk I see wandering around with their head buried in LP guides or sitting in bars / restuarants with their LP guides. What's the point? Is it not more fun to find places out for yourself. Just because one LP author claims somewhere is good doesn't mean it actually is, half them don't even visit places they write about or give it a good write up in exchange for free meals / booze / accomodation. It's all I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine sort of thing.

Use the LP as nothing more than a basic guide and refer to it when you need info is all I'm saying, don't carry it everywhere you go and follow it religiously.

You can do it for cheaper than that.

But it generally aint worth the extra cash.

^^ No it's not worth it but when I'm rich I'll happily pay even more for first class and look down my nose at the peasents in buisness / club. :D

Hahaha.

Imagine never having your own home but being rich enough to spend your whole life travelling

I'd imagine you'd get lonely after a few years though, obviously you make friends, but what about that special someone?

If you were that rich you could just buy the attentions of any fit bird. Job done. ;)

Think of all those 'special someones' you can meet on the road. ;)

Met plenty of folk who do just that - and resourcefulness is more or a requirement than being rich ;)

Personally after a year and a half I was fucking sick of living out of a back-pack and always moving on after a few weeks. I'd planned to be away for over 2 years, but I just didn't want to keep going. I felt that I really needed to put down roots. Sure beautiful women and stunning vistas help, but there's nothing like feeling like you belong somewhere.

I'd imagine it must get VERY tiring travelling all the time. Met a couple who were doing a year in total, they'd done 6 months up until that point and said it becomes pretty hard work but definitely worth it.
