The travel thread

i'm sure that's the reason, i agree!

motorbike magazines are full of people doing amazing trips on bikes all over the world. that's what i want to do. dunno if i'll ever have the time/money/company to ever do it, but here's hoping. i would rather travel under 'my own steam' (as opposed to trains etc.) and i would be happy camping too.

both completely different methods of achieving the same end. it's all good. %)

I'm thinking of buying a motorbike on my travels

Will cost me £100-200 and I can just sell it for cheap or donate it when I'm done

The only thing putting me off the idea is getting visas for it etc.

Boozing might be half of your trip but it won't be mines. I don't really booze much anymore, I don't enjoy getting drunk and I hate being hungover so much that I plan to never ever be hungover again. I can do without waking up feeling like shit when theres loads of stuff to be seeing and doing. :)

Good idea if you are skint. We were paying €5.50 for a pint last week in France, near Bordeaux, which is over £4. Western Europe seems bloody expensive now.

I think there's a part in everyone that wants to do that

I wouldn't mind doing it in the Croatian mountains where I can fish and fight wolves while enjoying nice weather and scenery

I need to read Into the Wild and watch the film. Heard nothing but good things. :)

Don't think I've the balls to do it myself like, I wouldn't survive.

i don't think i could be fucked with backpacking. unless you could hire a motorbike and hand it back at the end. :)
Do it - read 'Jupiter's Travels', if you haven't already - when my life blew apart, one of the options I seriously considered was to get my bike licence (sp? stoned!) and just disappear into the distance - why the fuck not - and you've the advantage of being a biker, instead of a wannabe like me!!!? What's keeping you in Aberdeenshire, for fuck's sake - and that's no disrespect to Aberdeenshire ;)

Why hire, when you could buy and sell? And, for example, if you can't be arsed with overland to India, fly to Delhi and buy an Enfield - anyone can keep one of those running with a knife'n'fork - have you been to India, Felix? If not, do it as soon as you can %)

(Bloody hell, you're the second person I've been persuading to go traveling this evening - eek - are those itchy feet I feel?!!! 8o )

Oh, and when I was considering that, I was older than you are now, our kid ;)

I'd like to buy or hire a VW Camper (can't drive like) and travel all over the world in it.

http://www.hippiecamper.com/ is a company I saw while in Oz that let you rent them, you can drive where you want and then just drop the van off where ever you end up as they have offices all over Oz.

I had a couple of lessons, I was shit and have no dedication so I gave up. I didn't have the money to be funding all these driving lessons and even if I had all the lessons and passed how would I afford to buy and run a car?

I've never really needed a motor. Dundee is quite small so public transport is fine and in Edinburgh everything is in walking distance of my flat and again very good transport. Better things to spend my money on now. :)

I didn't like mines either. He wasn't particularly an arsehole or anything but I just didn't like him much.

I gave up too easily.

aye, i read that donkey's years ago. old ted's a legend.

but as i said earlier - i wouldn't want to do it on my own. and believe it or not, i actually quite like having a job and having my own house and keeping up the mortgage payments and seeing my family & friends - so the idea of fucking off for a few years ain't gonna happen any time soon, if that's what you're getting at.

but it's definitely something i will do, when the time is right. :)

spade - don't become one of those fannies that has to rely on lifts from people all the fucking time. at least promise you'll get it done soon.

I'm going to convince my mate to come on my SE Asia trip with me. Wanted to go on my own at first, but after watching some videos I realised that there is so much I'd want to share

I am taking a road trip in two weeks to Hungary. Me driving with three others and staying in a cottage borrowed from my friends family. Cannot wait!! And we are gonna hit the autobahn on the way:)

No I won't get it done any time soon, at the moment and for the forseeable future I have absolutely no plans what-so-ever to learn to drive.
