My TEFL course has gone to shit. I'm afraid I probably won't get my certificate. I do very well in the classroom portions: grammar, phonetics, etc. are no problem.

My teaching sessions, however, are getting progressively worse. Try as I might, I can't seem to deliver what they want from me. I think 4 years of teaching has ingrained habits in me that are very difficult to unlearn. I have one last chance this afternoon. We shall see. :|
 
I was looking for psy clubs when I was in Bangkok in Jan. One of the locals directed me out to Eeze in RCA. It was ok but very quiet and seemed a long way from where I was staying in Banglamphu. That ooze place sounds the goods.

That raft party sounds awesome. I am going to try and give it a look in next time Im up there.

He organizes a bus from bangkok to arrive directly to the raft so you can't really get there without riding on that bus. But basically you have 5 rafts connected together. One of them has the dj system and the other ones have several rooms for people to sleep in. You pretty much pay for the bus ticket, party and accomodation. 3 days 2 nights long and you can't leave until the party is over :). I really recommend going if you're in thailand next time. Just look for Ooze bar and ask about their Moon Mountain parties.

Sounds a bit full on, I don't like the idea of being trapped on a raft for 3 days listening to psy trance and not being able to leave even if I want to.
 
^lol.....well you don't have to listen to psytrance the whole time. you could just go into the quieter rafts or do a bit of swimming. It's not so loud that your head is pounding after 3 days. Although my head was since I chose to sleep on the same raft as the sound system.=D

Yeah... this sounds like a complete nightmare to me. I don't want to be trapped anywhere for 3 days. Eek. I'm like an old person, lol. I need my quiet little place to fall asleep in with no one else around.
 
We decided to postpone our plans too. We figured it would be better to do it later when we have more money together vs. doing it now and being super poor. Plus, life here is really, really good so why rush to change? Sorry your plans fell through, but everything for a reason. <3

I can't wait to go to Nicaragua. We've been watching this season of Survivor (In Nicaragua) and the landscape looks breathtaking.
 
Anyone know how easy it is to buy Ket? I'm pretty much MDMA'd out after Ibiza so just want something for my soul to enjoy.

OT: For all of you in Thailand in November: try your best not to miss Loi Krathong. I found myself accidentally participating in it and can easily say it was one of my favourite nights in Bangkok :)

yaz if you want a side trip in the meantime to North Carolina we will show you around some amazing cliffs and mountain streams and feed you good wholesome (gluten free!) meals :D

This may have been covered, but are there under-the-table job opportunities for Americans in Thailand? I've ruled teaching out...
 
^You might be able to get away with teaching scuba diving or yoga, but the recent changes to visa laws make it much much harder. You'll be screwed by the visa rules, unless you can afford to manage that, even if you do find work. You can, of course, pay money to the right people to find a way to get you a visa that you don't really qualify for. This is fairly expensive and far less common than it used to be. Or you could marry a Thai.
You may find something on Koh Chang, at Treehouse, if you're looking for guest house type work. That's the only backpacker guest house in Thailand I've seen with falang staff working under the table. Koh Chang is also pretty close to the border, a mere day trip... but you'd need to make that run every 15 days!!
 
Yea, shit changed a while back. Now, you get thirty days at the airports, only 15 by land. This might be on your second entry... I forget. But anyways, after a month in the country it's out every 15.
 
^Are you sure about that? Because my girlfriend has been here for over 6 months and she has to go every 90 days. I went to Cambodia recently and when they stamped my passport it extended to 90 more days.

I was sure until I read this. Did you get a visa in the US before you left? I do know that if immigration stamped it with the wrong information, it doesn't matter. A friend had received a 90 day stamp back when she was supposed to get 30, when she tried to leave they wanted the overstay fees. She was held for a day and a half by immigration, her family had to wire her the 20,000THB.

If you are aU.S. citizen tourist staying for fewer than 30 days, you do not require a visa, but your passport must have at least six months validity remaining. You may be asked to show an onward/return ticket. If you enter Thailand by air without a visa, you are allowed to stay in Thailand for 30 days per visit. If you enter Thailand by land without a visa, you are allowed to stay in Thailand for 15 days per visit. If you enter Thailand without a visa, you cannot remain in Thailand for more than 90 days during any six-month period, counting from the date of first entry. After 90 days, you must apply for a new visa at a Thai embassy outside of the country. You must pay a Passenger Service Charge in Thai baht when you departi from any of Thailand's international airports. This charge is now included in airline ticket prices at Bangkok's main airport, Suvarnabhumi International Airport.

^oh yeah, I did get a multiple entry visa in the U.S. before I left. It works for 1 year which then after I need to get a new one. Perhaps it is only for people who did not pay for a visa that they only get 15 days.

Not easy to unlearn ... I started as a TEFLER but moved on to regular high school... now off work for a year and not keen on doing thai-style let's-have-some-fun-this-is-haha-time "teaching". no thanks.

Kanchanaburi eh? I was there just 10 days ago or so. I stayed welll away from the rafts though and opted for a quiet guesthouse with a nice garden some 15 minutes away from the noise. There was also recently some huge open-air boom-boom-chaka-bom house tek whatever festival in nature in Khao Yai... but I think "fuck it" - I live in this maddening city called Bangkok and, to be honest,, when I go out of Bkk I don't party much. I prefer to quieten my mind and enjoy quiet nature. Why do urbanites have to insist on bringing their crap noise with them everywhere they go? beats me... ok for koh phangan had rin parties... but why pollute EVERWHERE? Why spoil vangvien, possibly one of the most idyllic spots to chill out in, ever - until the stupid technokids come in. Damn, I hate it... if that's what ur after, just stay home ^^
