I'm glad you had fun as well! Where you in Chiang Mai during Loi Krotang? It's incredible there during the festival.
If you want a chilled out, laid back, luxurious (but not luxury prices) hostel in Bangkok then google Refill Now. It's well away from Koah San Rd and the main touristy areas, loads of local cafes n shops nearbye and it's not too far from the airport. Sky train and river taxis nearbye. It's great. I stayed there for 6 weeks.
This is how you do it.
So, according to this, the average appears to be around 550 baht per night.
If you convert using Xe,, you'll find that that is around 12GBP.
12 X 7 X 6 = 504
But yeah, you're going to find people are pretty nice if you ask questions, but this kind of thing you ought to learn how to do on your own if you want any semblance of planning ahead.
But anyway, this is actually pretty above-average price for a hostel, although Spade DID say it was luxury.

I'm so sorry to hear about jf
Our time in Thailand was amazing - We spent 3 nights in BKK - and completely agree with the above although we only had one guy try the gem-scam on us, we were pretty much left alone. Whenever visiting Wats, we always had appropriate clothing on, so that was no issue. We decided against all but 2 'tours' while in the country. Next time, we'll do it all on our own. I loved getting lost in the back streets of bangkok, eating the street food, meeting new friends. Spent a wicked night on Soi Cowboy with a group of new friends - nothing untoward, but got to know a handful of the girls better, had drinks with them, danced to Blondie covers... brilliant!
Chiang Mai was by far the best though - completely different to anywhere else i've been to in Thailand - so laid back, the locals are completely chilled - even in the Night Bazaar where they are at their most "sales aggressive", it was all friendly. The shopping - don't get me started. The quality of the clothing, shoes, jewelry, handicrafts...everything, was beyond compare. So cheap too, compared to other areas. We're kicking ourselves that we decided to wait until we got to Koh Samui to finish shopping! We took 2 tours while there, one to Lampang (Thai Elephant Conservation Centre and Hospital) and to Doi Inthanon National Park (highest point in Thailand)...we can definitely do it cheaper next time!
We only got to Koh Samui for 4 nights - during our time in Chiang Mai, we were following the torrential flooding on the island due to a tropical depression that got REALLY bad. 15 mins before landing on the island, our flight was diverted back to BKK due to flooding on the runway! We ended up spending 4 nights on Phuket - 2 in Patong (the 5th gate of hell) and 2 in Kamala Bay (really really lovely) but it rained for all but 5 hours. We got 1 beautiful day on Samui, but the rest was raining, showers, flooding.
So... didn't get my 8 nights of sun, surf, sand, cocktails on the beach, but had a BLAST! My husband and i had a wonderful honeymoon - by the end of it (flooding, me falling over in the flooding and hurting my knee quite badly, the driver at samui airport locking his keys in the car and us having to wait an hour for the other driver to arrive with the spare key - which was the wrong key lol - spending time at Samui airport isn't too hard, as Bearlove could attest to) we were just laughing at the comedy of errors and (mis)adventures.
I love the country and can't wait to go back - especially to Chiang Mai, we've seriously fallen in love with the place![]()
... We did the usual, chilling out poolside and watching the thunderstorms, drinking our way though the cocktail lists, hiring mopeds, crashing said mopeds, ... I fell in love with Papaya salad ... get the shopping and the hustle and bustle out of the way and then go Samui to chill out big style.
you confirm pretty much what i tried to suggest with my post above - you did the tourist stuff that requires little interaction with local people not specifically trained to deal with rich westerneres who have loads of cash to wave about... what did it cost you to have the moped fixed? Thais can get quite feisty when this sort of thing happens...
I agree with you on the papaya salad all the way, that stuff is amazing!
Your last statement... about Samui.... i like lamai beach off-season cos it's pretty quiet... biut I've bee going there for 10 years and I know a place or two that'll still do you a room for 400 baht or so. Which is still about triple what it was 10 years ag0... it's gone way upmarket... all resorts... for those who chill by the poolside and never get to see the real country. Most Thais have never seen the beach, cos they can't afford it... But Chaweng......... I dislike it thoroughly. Why must people come to a tropical island paradise and do what they consider to be "chill out big style" and then this consists of mainly just loud music and mindless consumption? There's an ice bar there that has subzero temperatures while it's 40deg c plus outside.... you get mittens and a hat when u go in i think... and a pair of boots to make your carbon footprint, and you pay for the pleasure. Then there is Q bar... branch of the Bangkok trendy disco... they have international dj's
flown in for your holiday pleasure, including Roni Size and many other big names I couldnt care less about. So you can chill to the beat at 150bpm, lovely.
I mean seriously, WTf for???? if tha is your fancy then stay at home or do it in bangkok... leave nature be... or am I just getting old?
I agree with you about how built up the lovely beaches etc are - some places need to be left alone, not every tourist resort needs techno music, nightclubs and all you can eat buffets.
does anyone have recommendations for good beaches on phangan with a laid back traveller vibe in february? i really liked had yao (west) when i was there a few years ago in september, but have heard that it's now more noisy with nightclubs and that there's a lot of coral pieces in the water in february...
On Ko Pha Ngan I liek Had Salad beach (northwest) and also Bottle beach (I think Norteast) ...
I like Railey island off Krabi, somewhere near Phi Phi (which i haven't ben to due to the hype). But even on relatively quiet Railey one is at risk of having shitey pop and tech bass blasting into the wee hours, and if one wants to sleep at, say, midnight, because all one actually wants is RELAX, forget it... the bass penetrates all...
