http://www.tomvater.com/thailand/th...-worst-hotel-is-a-gem-just-don´t-sleep-there/

theoverstay.com isn't regularly updated but has a map... not far from banglamphu/kaosarn... now i wouldn't live there but I do hang out from time to time... tomorrow night is halloween party, come see me look dodgy and hear me play live experimental sounds ! :)

now off work for a year and not keen on doing thai-style let's-have-some-fun-this-is-haha-time "teaching". no thanks.

Hahaha, I Know the feeling all too well ;).

Why do urbanites have to insist on bringing their crap noise with them everywhere they go? beats me... ok for koh phangan had rin parties... but why pollute EVERWHERE? Why spoil vangvien, possibly one of the most idyllic spots to chill out in, ever - until the stupid technokids come in. Damn, I hate it... if that's what ur after, just stay home ^^

I noticed that Thais are incapable of appreciating silence. There HAS to be noise, and they HAVE to talk as loudly as possible on top of it.

So much for buddhism.

Btw, I just realized I never replied to your older posts in this thread, sorry about that. I am glad to see you're past the romance stage yet seem to be able to get something meaningful out of it :)

p.s. I highly doubt Ritalin is available OTC. But yes, nootropics are easy to get OTC - I used Hydergine and Tianeptine extensively there.

Dear all,

I have good reason to believe that junctionalfunkie is no longer with us. He was supposed to come meet up with me in Bkk some time soon... I stumbled over this piece of nws from a Thai forum: [removed link for privacy reasons - n3o]
Suffice too say, I freaked out and still am. I wrote to jf straightaway and got no reply and he has not posted for a few days. His last couple of posts were fairly despondent.

I still hope it is not him, but I very much think it is. We were supposed to meet so soon. Damn.

Sorry for just throwing this out there at you all like this, I don't know what to do!

RIP?

I'm speechless...

I can definitely confirm that the person in the link is JF.

He sent me a message on FB the same day he wrote the post above about him failing his course. He said he was going to find heroin and spend the night with it in his room. Nowhere did he indicate that he actually meant to kill himself, but still I advised it against it. I also told him that failing the course sucks but shouldn't be that big of a deal, and said that he always had the option to teach in bkk or vietnam without a tefl degree.

I don't know what to think.

Did I have a hand in all this? :(

EDIT: Yeah it is all over his facebook.

He rests in peace.

Thanks JV, good reminder. I'm away working just now, but will be home next week sometime. I'll check the links as well to make sure they aren't culled in the clean up.

I am lazy but I think we need a pets and/or animals MEGA thread too.

You are right in so many ways. Another job to add to the list that I will look at upon my return. :)

^sorry to hear the above news :(.

I had such a great time in Thailand - Koi Samoi was simply breathtaking with picture postcard scenery at every turn. Locals were really friendly and everyone went out of their way to help when they noticed you were lost etc.

BKK was another story though - away from the tourist attractions I loved the place, get near the attractions and the liars / cheats seem to come out of the woodwork. So many of them targeting tourist telling them that x attraction is closed or your not dressed properly so why not visit x attraction instead. Even innocent looking old guys sitting reading newspapers would sit up and then offer you advice, draw you a little map and then magically a tuk tuk would appear :D.
I still don’t know half the things that I ate from roadside vendors but I’m sure that this is a case when ignorance is bliss.

I'm so sorry to hear about jf :(

Our time in Thailand was amazing - We spent 3 nights in BKK - and completely agree with the above although we only had one guy try the gem-scam on us, we were pretty much left alone. Whenever visiting Wats, we always had appropriate clothing on, so that was no issue. We decided against all but 2 'tours' while in the country. Next time, we'll do it all on our own. I loved getting lost in the back streets of bangkok, eating the street food, meeting new friends. Spent a wicked night on Soi Cowboy with a group of new friends - nothing untoward, but got to know a handful of the girls better, had drinks with them, danced to Blondie covers... brilliant!

Chiang Mai was by far the best though - completely different to anywhere else i've been to in Thailand - so laid back, the locals are completely chilled - even in the Night Bazaar where they are at their most "sales aggressive", it was all friendly. The shopping - don't get me started. The quality of the clothing, shoes, jewelry, handicrafts...everything, was beyond compare. So cheap too, compared to other areas. We're kicking ourselves that we decided to wait until we got to Koh Samui to finish shopping! We took 2 tours while there, one to Lampang (Thai Elephant Conservation Centre and Hospital) and to Doi Inthanon National Park (highest point in Thailand)...we can definitely do it cheaper next time!

We only got to Koh Samui for 4 nights - during our time in Chiang Mai, we were following the torrential flooding on the island due to a tropical depression that got REALLY bad. 15 mins before landing on the island, our flight was diverted back to BKK due to flooding on the runway! We ended up spending 4 nights on Phuket - 2 in Patong (the 5th gate of hell) and 2 in Kamala Bay (really really lovely) but it rained for all but 5 hours. We got 1 beautiful day on Samui, but the rest was raining, showers, flooding.

So... didn't get my 8 nights of sun, surf, sand, cocktails on the beach, but had a BLAST! My husband and i had a wonderful honeymoon - by the end of it (flooding, me falling over in the flooding and hurting my knee quite badly, the driver at samui airport locking his keys in the car and us having to wait an hour for the other driver to arrive with the spare key - which was the wrong key lol - spending time at Samui airport isn't too hard, as Bearlove could attest to) we were just laughing at the comedy of errors and (mis)adventures.

I love the country and can't wait to go back - especially to Chiang Mai, we've seriously fallen in love with the place <3
