The fish thread

Hmm alright I'll check some of it out see what I can afford, thanks a lot!
 
Hey Samadhi. I have given Simon a pea before but he only had a bit of a munch.
I put a bit of lettuce in but how did you overcome the fact that it floats? He wont be able to get to it on the surface of the water. Hmm maybe I could sink it under some gravel, hmm.

I have been giving Fightey a break from food for 24-36 hours, then he goes wild over what ever I put in the tank.

I saw a female in the petshop yesterday for 6 bucks and she was fat like she was full of eggs. Fightey hasnt really made any bubble nests but if I put a female next to the tank it might encourage him to start blowing one.

Well i got my 3ft tank and stand and filter etc off ebay...$300aus You can find some awesome ones in ebay but most require pick up.

I would suggest starting out small like with a bench top Aqua Start 320 and then go to something big. The fun of fish wears off when you test the water and things go wrong.

When establishing your tank you need to also do a 'fishless cycle' which also helps level out ammonia and nitrate and nitrite. It also allows you to adjust the pH levels. It's not as simple as buying a tank and adding fish unfortunatly...if you go to your local fish store/aquairium they are more than happy to help you out with advice etc.

The test kits we use are: Aqua Master - pH Tester and API Test Kit which has all your NitrIte and NitrAte and Ammonia and Ph Testers in it. Also glass test tubes and plastic reading cards. We got it off ebay brand new $65.

Do some research into what fish you want or even just spend some time at the lfs(local fish store) and watch the fish, ask aboout compatability for tank life and breeding etc.

...seem to be anialating the plants which is weird. They eat normal fish food and they also got worms this morning and eat algea to but they <3 the plants! Im going to have to replace them soon for fresh one if they keep eating them...

We just put the bit of lettuce under a medium sized pebble, and then they latched on. Try an algae wafer too, they LOVE them! :)

Do normal snails eat that to?

Our fish seem to be picking the snails off one by one...we use to have a whole hand full...now...i hardly see them at all...maybe I should look at getting one or two...what do they generally eat?
 
That's awesome actually, SF69, and the reason why we got our 2 clown loaches... they LOVE snails. We don't have apple snails anymore, the ones the CL's ate were the pest snails.

You don't want to feed the pest snails...they take over the tank. We have hundreds of empty pest snail shells among the gravel in our tank. Anyway, they live on the detrius in the gravel - which is why it's important not to let your gravel get too dirty. I guess it's all about keeping a balance in the tank - not TOO clean, but not TOO dirty.

Apple Snails aren't pests - you can buy them from the aquarium. If you have fish that eat snails, don't get Apple snails, get something else like plecos or similar.

hmm...interesting...maybe the clown loaches picked them off one by one. They were the ones you get on plants when you buy them and then suddenly there were heaps of them...and now only a few. We have some small cone snails but they are pretty inactive. Snails wouldnt go well in our big tank cause the convicts are cichilids and the gouramis would also try to eat them but they may go ok with our bristol nose plecs...
 
Our 5 year old pleco just died :( Sounds like you had pest snails, my dear... in which case, it's good that you have clown loaches, etc. They are the best way to (help) rid your tank of pest snails. :)

Apple snails are best kept in a tank with fish that don't peck them. Also, Apple snails need a very high pH water, due to their shells... too low a pH will eat their shells away... they need a more alkaline water... unfortunately, some fish that like alkaline water also like to peck/eat apple snails.
 
I buy a snail or two for my pleco every few weeks just to bring a bit of live food into his diet. My turtle eats garden snails which i breed my self in a small snail habitat, i won't feed him the ones out of the garden through fear of passing on nasty pesticides. I also want to back up SF69's advice about running a fish less cycle, that sort of planning pays big dividends in the end
 
Thats bad news about your Pleco Samadhi.. :( Im sure not only were you attached but they are pricey too!

I put a small piece of lettuce in the gravel... I happened to see Simon squirm up to it, sniff it, climb up onto it and over it and then cruise away! :(
I'll check out the pet shop for algae tables today.

One word of advise for anyone that is considering to start a fish tank, never ask the people at the store for advise. most of the time they are very uneducated, or they will straight up lie to you. always get information from fish forums.
 
Oh no! He didn't like the lettuce? Well, try the algae wafers... they love them.

As for the comment about not asking aquariums for advice... dude, if you go to a dedicated aquarium, they give good advice - in all honesty, why would an aquarium, that specialises in fish, hire an employee that doesn't know about fish?

I'll look at fish forums for info, but you know what? If i need medical advice, i'll go to a doctor, not a medical forum... our fish guy is awesome, he knows his shizzle, and never tries to over-sell to us... because he knows that by behaving in such a way, he'll get our return business. :)

Im with Samadhi.... thats a very ignorant statement. I agree with you about the inability to get good advice from your bigger franchise type places such as those located in shopping centres etc. However, I have about 3 regular aquarists that I vist regularly. One store is run by a marine biologist with post graduate studies in controlled aquatic environments and regularly contributes to journals on the topic. The other two shops are also run by just as knowledgeable and helpful people who, whilst dont have all the tertairy qualifications, are able to provide you with very useful info an advice.

As far as your comment about forums, thats an even bigger crock of shit. I have visited several forums on the subject and they are all full of people providing their own opinion with little reliance on common factors. You read one thread that started off as one question and by the end of it you have read about a dozen different opinions and the OP is even more confused then they where at the start.

RIIIIGHT...

That is a very narrow minded way to think about it...but i guess you have probably had a dodgy experience?

We get all our fish from various aquairiums and even our local pet store that also sells other pets! None of our fish have been dodgy and died or even expensive. I get a discount at our local pet shop because i got to know the lady who works there and her stock. She showed me how to vacumm my gravel and other info i needed she gave me.

Some aquairiums yes...are dodgy with advice...BUT you can always ask for a second opinion.

I think it's a case of shopping around and finding the right place that suits your needs. I have got advice of some fish forums and find most of the forums are full of cock heads who's egos are as big as the number of fish they have. There is SOME good info. We got our fishless cycle guide off a forum...but i wouldnt get sound advice from someone unless i KNOW they know what they are talking about.

Most of the places we go the staff have various experience and degrees. If you buy fish from a dodgy place...expect dodgy advice.
 
Before I bought fightey and I was in and out of the pet shop, two different staff members told me two different things about him.
One said- He was a young fish and his fins would grow bigger as he grew up.
The other- That he was a short-finned male and they wouldnt grow any bigger.

But that is a pet shop not a specific aquarium.

The best place I go to is a family run business and I have been going there for 15 years. Its funny, they go through hobby enthusiasims and last time I was there they had Tarantulas and Scorpions and carnivourous plants. I really trust thier advice though as they have been doing it so long.

News flash: I bought a nice blue girlfriend for Fightey (Yet to be named). I have her in another tank next to each other and she is fat from all her eggs so hopefully I will have some grandchildren soon.

I will post photos when she is settled and a bit more active.

I have spent the last hour trying to do a fishy roll call...im convinced my 5 silver foxes are now a 4some...

I can;t for the life of me find the 5th..i still have to figure out how to tell them apart...boys and girls...

I wish our male bristol nose would go forth and multiply...
 
This is the female fighter I bought. No name, I was just being childish when I named Fightey. I might think of something cool. :)

Not a great photo of her. The blue is bright irridesant and all over her body usually.

She has been eating well, but is inactive and tends to hide. I am hoping she will be fine and perk up a bit, I think maybe females are just generally less active.
I have put a screen inbetween the tanks in case she is intimidated by fightey (you can see the postcard in the pic).

And simon the snail is loving eating chunks of tomato! I didnt buy they algae wafers, they were pricey and in HUGE containers but apparently snails love tomato, and its true!

^ Klue I think you should call your fish Lady Caviar ~ that way no other fish will suspect that she is a fighter (LOL) !!! ;) =D =D <3 %)
