We (the SO mods) discussed it and thought this one could easily be merged because it's discussing something pertaining to parenting and advice relating to breastfeeding, whereas the "breast feeding sucks" one is moreso discussing the social aspect of a specific parenting issue, and not really a discussion for advice on the subject. We now have this generalised parenting thread so, yeah, we can lump everything relating to parenting together in here :)

For broad topics I think it's better to have these types of generalised threads so that people who are looking for general advice can find it all in the one thread.

In Indonesia a new law has been passed that stipulates all babies should be exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life. From early next year, anyone who stands in the way of this will be fined up to 100m rupiah (£7,000; $11,000) and sentenced to up to a year in prison.

WTF, surely making women breast feed against their will would be more traumatic and stop bonding with the child more than formula feeding. Ok I breast feed all of mine, I personally am too lazy and salfish not to, but this seems like one of those paper shuffling pen twitching idiots have done it again by not thinking things through before deciding how to force their opinions on to others.

^^ That makes me sad. I'm sure their intentions are the best for the future health of the children, but applying LAWS to the way mothers feed their children is just adding unnecessary pressure...especially for first time mothers!
Ridiculous.

I wouldn't worry about the children of Indonesia. The are 300 million people spread across hundreds of islands with such a vast array of cultures that it is impossible to enforce even road rules let alone parenting.

My brother has lived there for almost 5 years and he laughed when I mentioned it. Might be a problem in a nanny state such as America or Britain but I'd say the law exists so that large multinationals would be able to be punished if they go into villages and peddle their formula's. Reality is many families would not be able to afford formula and rely on wet nurses within their own communities.

^^ Very good points, and that does actually make me feel slightly better about the situation :D

i requested an episiotomy on round 2; with my first it was the doctors suggestion and i consented. feeling yourself tear inside is no picnic, especially being epidural-free. i say go with the flow; it's good that you have an idea of what to expect, but things don't always go that way. and for the record, the incision does not go all the way to your bumhole! jeebus christ.

quick parenting tip: Bob Marley is like magic for putting babies to sleep.

I thought it was just my babies bc i played bob for my belly when i was pregnant, but i've heard this from tons of other parents too

i was going to write a joke about how at today's ultrasound, if the kid is a boy and he's anything like me, there will be no doubt, but the prick ended up making me envious.

yes, a boy. so he'll be taking my family name and not fancee's.

Congrates, on a dude. A hell of a lot less stress when he hits 16 I hear.

Now you just have to try and avoid your mrs cutting all her hair off as soon as he is born. What are the odds that LacyK gets a "short momma do" before she finishes breastfeeding?

That is so awesome IP!! I'm so completely excited for you both. Can't wait to meet the little dude! :) <3

thanks busty and n3o. i would have been happy either way, but i must admit i am eager to play soccer with the chap.

the ultrasound doc was like "do you want to know the gender?" and we said yes. she then said "good, cuz it's pretty hard to hide" and then she refocused the thing and i was like oh shit!

oh fuuuuuuck no. NEVAR!!:D

I dont ever keep my hair down anyways. Its always put back in braids or a pony tail/bun type thang so there aint much to hang down. If i was the hair down type i think it would drive me fuckin insane and id have to do somethin but I always got it pulled back and away from my face and tied up in the back or i got a scarf on my head so nothin for baby to pull at. My man loves it too....i dont think i could deal with not havin my long hair. It took me so long to get it to where its at now (butt level) i could never take away all my years of patience and just chop it. No wai!

Thanks for givin me a shiver down my spine busty . Oh lord no, this hair aint gettin cut. Ima just increase my scarf collection x10 if it comes to that:D

Also lefty...thats how i found out i was havin a boy too pretty much! I didnt wanna know the sex...But the first ultrasound that I got, she asked did i wanted to know and i was like na keep it a secret...but i was looking at the picture and i was like oh shit thats a boy!!

the lady was like yea you right...usually the patient cant tell only the ultrasound tech can recognize it but he is a show off! =D

Im already so full of pride, lol :D

LMAO! I always wondered what possesses women to chop all their hair off after they have kids, and now I know why!!! But like Lacey, there is no way in hell I'm cutting my hair! I promised myself and my husband I wouldn't. Even though its a PAIN IN MY ASS!!! I think the biggest thing, and plz dont get grossed out by this, but sometimes I'll be like "wait, when was the last time I showered?" and then I realize its been like 3-4 days (yikes!) and when i got to shower I end up having all these rats nests in my hair from pulling it back so much and not taking the time (whats that?) to brush it everyday. Sometimes I contemplate getting dreads :\

o yeah, i was going to mention in here about breast-feeding, that I remember going to a party not too long ago and there was a women who was smoking a cigarette while she was nursing!!!!! ahhh!!!!! just goes to show you that just bc a mom breast feeds doesn't make her a good mom

^yea i dont know of nobody who would think a mom is a good one just becuz she breastfeeds...thats just as stupid as thinking that a woman is a bad mom for having a job when she got a kid, etc.

Anyways, i was just gonna throw in my 2 about the Indonesian breastfeeding law--The way i see it aint that its about the WOMEN , and restricting or enforcing it on women. Im 99% sure that its meant to prevent people who would try to stop the women from doing it. I dont think its about forcing women to do one thing or the other at all but its protection against the formula corporations, employers, etc, --anybody who would interfere with a woman bein able to breastfeed whether its by pushing formula, telling women they cant breastfeed in public, etc. It seems to be much more about protecting women who do breastfeed than forcing anybody to do it. Thats at least the vibe i got from it, definately didnt see it as some kind of bad 'forcing women to breast feed' thing but just a very solid commitment to makin sure that women dont get interfered with at all and nobody makes it harder for them to do it by doin the shady shit like Nestle did in africa, etc.

Yeah I can't wait to hear how lacey and her baby boy are doing <3

So cool to hear that your boy has started moving L2R!! So exciting! How is ff feeling??

she's alright actually. lucky girl. but her methane production is critically threatening the ozone around pyrmont. wear a hat, seriously.
