The Aus Social Fishingpersons thread

This thread can be a good record of decent fish I have caught. So I caught that Taylor on 24/6 and today is the 2nd August... So it's been just over a month since I went fishing (I'm pretty sure).

Caught this Bream tonight, about 33cm. It has a disease or has been attacked or something...

Is it fin rot? I have no idea... There is a bit of blood formed around the edges of the wound, you can kinda see it in the photo. Seems perfectly healthy apart from the tail fin, and a good size too. (The blood around the head is the kill shot) I don't think I'm going to eat it, I'm a bit grossed out :\

freshwater fishing ftw

my parents have a shack at Arthurs Lake in Tasmania (its actually up for sale - 2x1 , double garage, huge block, lake views, $120k o.n.o - seriously someone should buy it - comes with all the furniture AND a boat - buy it and move in!). I miss that place so much. One of the best trout fishing lakes imo. Fly fishing is my thang. stalking your prey and out-witting is soooo rewarding when you see your fly get swallowed by a massive wild trout.

No way I was going to eat that Bream, so I gave it to my neighbour :D

(Neighbour though as I suspected and that it had just been attacked by a bigger fish at some stage)

I'm glad someone is going to eat it. Don't know why you'd kill a fish if you weren't going to eat it.

Oi! Give me some credit! It's was 1 O'clock in the morning, therefore pitch black! I only noticed the tail when I took it to the boat ramp to clean it. Up until then it was the best Bream I had ever caught. I always chuck the little ones back, I even just cut the hooks off sometimes to minimize the stress on the fish. I probably would have eaten it anyway because the three or four people I showed said it was just a bite mark. I had some steak in the fridge I had to cook anyway.

Plenty of 1-4kg snapper, 1-2kg salmon and flathead up to 37cm in Port Phillip Bay with the odd 5kg snapper caught at Corio (near Geelong). My guess is Western Port Bay would be just as productive.

Some friends just got back from a tuna fishing expedition to Port Fairy, Portland (SW Vic) and Port Macdonnell (SE SA). They managed to catch and release southern blue fin tuna from 12-63kg, large albacore and a 212cm mako shark. They also lost plenty of expensive lures to schools of large barracouta which frequent the continental shelf to feed on bait fish and krill this time of the year. They also tried their luck at some deep sea bottom fishing and got some nice blue eye trevella and blue grenadeire from the 300-400m water, both of which are lovely to eat.

^ How long were they away for? Sounds like a kick arse trip.

Is a barracuda and a barracouta the same thing? ;)

What do you guys make of the greens wanting to ban recreational fishing in 1/3 of your coastal waters?

Yeah - I read about this in the sunday paper. tbh I dont know what to make of it. I kind of sympathise with the greens on most stuff, but as a recreational fisherman, this idea frustrates me. Not because I think i'm going to lose a place to fish necesarily, but its just another damn regulation I have to look out for.

anyway, politics is the last thing that needs discussing in a fishing thread. nuf said.

What proportion do the current green zones make up? I can't form an opinion on that until I know more and I'm too lazy/hungry to find it for myself right now.

^ Yeah, post the information up here for sure. I'd love to read it! There is Marine park in lots of my usual fishing areas around here, I abide by it but some of those areas were the best fishing spots there are around here! I understand though, it's like a natural hatchery for lots of species.

Bream are on at the moment... I caught a nice 30cm one yesterday morning just on sunrise, and the guy I was with caught a massive one that was easy 50mm thick through the body!

edit: for nickyj : exactly...

2/3's of a fuckload of coastline is still a fucking lot of coastline.

I was expecting to at least catch some decent bream last night. The tide was high, the moon wasn't out.. but no dice, only a little Tarwine and an undersize Bream. Lots of bites though :)

Was beautiful fishing weather here this weekend. But I was too busy being hungover :\

^ spam?

went out fishing last weekend... without bait... on purpose. hooked a nice aussie salmon on very light gear (my kids rods) which was fun and gave new hope to this lure concept. we then decided to troll a couple of lures to pass the time and ended up hooking about a dozen tailor over the next two hours. nothing big mind you - about 35cm was the largest, but better than nothing and nice to know it can be done. All fish were released.

the biggest problem was putting up with the chug chug chug of the motor at low revs, and the fumes - bleh! an electric motor would have been nice.

^ That's the site I use to check the exact times.

But my GShock has a tide graph on it :D
