The Alcohol thread...

Nah you just have to get the good stuff and not hammer it too much. I stopped drinking beer for a month but let myself have wine. You can really tell the difference between the ones that use the cheap nasty preservatives and the chemical free ones or ones that go easy on the chemicals. I had a couple of shocker hangovers and other times when I could drink a bottle or more with no consequences. Its a bit more expensive than beer though.

Although I tend to only drink 'cheap wine' (bottles ranging from $6-$20, dont even touch the shit that comes from the cask due to the amount of sulphites added to preserve it), I never get a hangover from wine alone.. I'm talkin 2-3 bottles over an afternoon/evening, sometimes with a complete black out, yet no ill feelings the following morning.. its only when I mix it with beer or spirits that it woops my arse when I wake up

I guess when you're on the cheap shit, it works out cheaper than beer haha hence why I've grown accustomed to drinking it on a regular basis.. infact, I prefer a good shiraz cab. over any white at the moment...

God damn, wish it was the same for the rest of us haha. Certainly nothing wrong with under $20 bottles! the shop i manage specialises in under $20's.
Have you tried many organic/bio-dynamic bottles? I've definitely noticed a difference in hangover the next morning because of the zero/low sulfite content.

Hey guys are there any really strong common beers in Australia? I've never come across any stronger than 1.4 a drink (standard bottles - like 375ml).

A local or imported beer? There are tons of beers with a higher ABV than say, VB, Tooheys etc. best place to start would be Europeans beers. Or if you want an Aussie style go for an Indian Pale Ale. Craft beer is a massive market these days so the majority of bottle-o's will stock them.

I'm not picky, open to both! Just gotten into beer in big way so i'm still a bit naive when it comes to my taste history so to speak. The bottlos in my town seem to be severely understocked in the beer department as well. Not really much selection, i'll keep an eye out for Indian Pale Ale though.

^ get the coopers DIY kit, you'll start making your money back after you've finished the third brew. Eventually you'll be able to change the ingredients to suit your taste.

India pale ales are not an Aussie style of beer. It was made by the English years ago, they beefed up the malt and hops so the beer could last a boat trip to India.

@energysausage are you looking for a strong beer in flavour? Or do you just want high alcohol content?

Alcohol content. Open to suggestions for really nicely flavoured beers too though

^ it's a horrible beer (not sure if they still make it), but tooheys do Platinum Extra Dry. I think that's around 7%.

If your not too concerned about price then hit up an Australian craft brewery online.

For lunch I had a Black Belgium IPA (8.2% ), killer beer for the weather.

James Squire has a few above average alc. content and are a really nice drop. The Belgium beer Chimay blue is also very strong...9% i believe and also tastes incredible

Yeah I'm aware of that, should have phrased that a little better. I was thinking one of the many Australia IPA's out there. Feral's Hop hog, Vale, James Squire, Mountain goat etc. They're not a hopped up as a lot of the US ones.

The extra dry platinum's are only 1.4-6standard drinks now (can't remember the exact ABV).

Mm tasty, what was the black IPA you were drinking? Sipping on a Rochefort 10 at the moment, so tasty.

I think it was from Tree Brewing Co. not 100% sure, it was poured for me.

It's all me and an associate have been drinking through winter. Dark, lots of hops, high abv and an awesomely strong Belgium yeast to top it off.

Love rochefort anything, especially the 10.

Some of my favourite Australian craft IPAs include Holgates Roadtrip, Kooindas black IPA, Ferals Hop Hog and Little Creatures Limited Ed DIPA (technically a double IPA). They've all done the rounds and you can usually find them in most states at specialty bottle-O's (except the DIPA, Lim Ed).

Are those Carlsbergs legit or just the shit they brew in Australia? I fucking love Carlsberg but refuse to pay for/drink the Aussie brewed shite, the real thing can be pretty hard to find though and you often pay a fairly hefty price for it, in my experience anyway. When I am solvent I tend to always have atleast a 6 pack in the fridge so I can indulge whenever it takes my fancy.

Hey d_m have a read of this article -

http://www.choice.com.au/reviews-an.../alcohol/parallel-import-beer-taste-test.aspx

Make sure you read both pages, would like to know your thoughts on the results. Cheers.

^ I have actually read that article before, it is relatively interesting and it does raise some good points but overall I don't feel the message it tries to portray is particularly correct and I am dubious whether local breweries paid them for that.

One can clearly argue that fresh beer is better but when imports can get here in a fraction of the time it takes for them to reach their use by date I just don't really see it as a big issue. There has been the odd time that I got an obviously old slab of import that did taste a bit funny and wasn't as enjoyable as it should of been, but this is talking like a couple of times ever and I do buy quite a lot of beer. I would concede that with certain beers there are often cans available and these cans can be a bit more prone to ageing having an impact on taste I think.

There might be more argument for the locally brewed shit if it was actually even the same beer when you removed the element of where it was brewed, but they are not. They taste noticeably different and aside to that sometimes they have a different alcohol content than their European counterparts, usually tending to be lower as well. Carlsberg is a definite example of this.

Some of the local versions are better than others, I really don't mind the locally brewed Kronenbourg 1664 for example, but would still take the import over it any day. I love imported Carlsberg but I am really not a huge fan of it when brewed locally it has a sort of funny taste that reminds me of cheaper Australian beers like Carlton Draught and makes me suspicious they add that gas or whatever they do to make the shit ferment in like a day. Stella is awesome imported, I think the stuff brewed in Australia honestly tastes like shit, you see a lot of ones floating around that were brewed in the UK for some weird reason and those ones actually go down alright.

One could certainly argue that it is my perception going in that influences my taste, and in some cases they may be right, however I can say for certain in many cases this is not true. There are a number of beers that I have drank without enquiring as to whether they were brewed locally or not and could honestly instantly tell from their flavour, and confirmed I was right by a closer examination of the label, Stella and Heineken are two that spring to mind. I also always hated Stella, until I actually traveled to Europe and tasted shit brewed in Belgium, now I have returned to Australia I still cannot stand the stuff brewed in Australia but enjoy the import quite a bit, I do not believe this is a coincidence. It also wouldn't make sense that I quite enjoy the UK brewed Stella but dislike the Australian one, since the UK one obviously isn't authentic either.

This is just my opinion and what I prefer, obviously people are entitled to spend their money on and drink whatever their preference is. In my experience though there is a definite difference between the imported European beer and the locally brewed stuff. One thing I notice as well is that the imported versions are consistently the same price or cheaper than the locally brewed shit, it wasn't too long ago I went in to my local Dan Murphies and paid 5 dollars less per slab than they were charging for the Aussie ones.

Yeah, I just thought it was interesting about the number of 'judges' who thought the locally brewed Carlsberg (for example) was 5 to 2 over the imported stuff. I personally have tried both of a few differing types of beers and can't tell much difference, but that's just me and I'm no expert, I do like beer though. As you said there may be other things going on behind the scenes that influence such a 'table'.

I don't mind nearly all the imported types of beers (imported or not), but some are pretty expensive sometimes, but there's also a quite a few Aussie ones I don't mind either, i'm not really too fussed, even after so long of drinking beer. I hardly drink spirits much as I find it even more of a rip off, but every few months usually in the company of females I will drink some mixed spirits. I never buy it for myself though.

I dont have a dan murphys very close but at $5 a case cheaper I would buy that for sure. When woolies (BWS) here have specials on some imports I buy that, but most the time it's probably not imported, I rarely check.

Yeah I found that really surprising, although I have to admit I have picked up a slab of Danish Carlsberg in Australia once that was definitely quite old and tasted that way, so perhaps they just got unlucky with the import they were using. Usually when I pick up Carlsberg it is fine although that one is a bit hard to find where I live if you want the legit version. I honestly think the locally brewed version is not very good, and regardless of whether someone liked or disliked it, it has to be acknowledged that they are two rather different beers.

Premixed spirits are an absolute joke and have been since they brought in that 'Alcopops tax' years ago, I forget how long it lasted, all I remember is it was unsuccessful and the stupid Government ended up giving all the money raised back to the grog companies anyway and the alcohol prices never went back to normal. Spirits are not too bad if you buy by the bottle but these days I find myself drinking almost exclusively beer and have been for a while now. Even buying bottles it does start to get a little expensive if you want to go for the nicer shit, whereas you can get a lot of nicer beers for only about 25% more than normal it is more like 35% mark up for quality spirits, plus a lot of cheap or average priced beer is very decent but a lot of cheaper spirits are pretty much gut rot shit.

Shit can vary from store to store within a chain but my personal experience dictates that BWS often don't stock the truly imported versions of European beers. The strange thing is that in my area, probably 80% (maybe more!) of imported European beer I find is actually imported by this specific Woolworths store, yet you never see those imports in any bottle shops actually owned by Woolworths, I really can't figure that one out!

I take it you guys are talking about standard carlsberg and not the special brew. Special seems to be delightful at all times ;). I was surprised to find that they also brew it under license in africa. To be honest I'm no longer a fan. I should try the import stuff again just to be sure but for some reason I've lost my taste for it.

Alcohol, you sneaky little fucker

I'm sure I'm not alone here. Give up the 'bad stuff' and now just a daily drinking alchoholic.
2 months post last rehab. At 5 now I think?

As I get older the more alchohol has me by the balls. Would never have expected this.
Feel like a complete looser going to the same bottleshops each day at 3pm and 7pm.

Really hoping this is the end of the addiction cycle because I really dislike this alcoholic thing.
Was never my DOC but its the last one standing...

Not an AM drinker... Yet... But am starting to become quite concerned. This is the first time in 15+ years of drug abuse that alcohol has presented as a real problem.
