religion - your thoughts

A conversion from one non-religion to another.

After a decisive argument between friends, I've decided that since theres no God, and hence no possible way of us existing, we don't.

I think i'm a athiest with wiccan tendancies... is that right? well if it's not, i'm making it a new religion... why not :) i believe that i'll find out when i get there. there's no more too it, i don't want to critisize christians but i've been sitting back and i think that that religion is very hypocritical. don't get me wrong, my bf is a 'son of a preacher man' ;), i just don't think they're doing it right... did that make sense? anyway that's my 2 cents.
each to their own :)
 
I believe in the power of creation. Energy is never lost only transferred, so when i go i'm happy to be worm food.I think It's when you you tell people you act with Gods blessing or are following his teachings, that it all goes to pot. I wish God Jesus Allah Ginesh...whatever could all just be substituted with "The power of creation" and we all got on with saving this planet instead of f***ing it up.
And we wonder why people turn to drugs.
 
ok heres the deal. Im christian. Its the most incredible thing, finding something which - the best way i can say it and its gonna sound so cliched and corny - but really just filled a void.

Ive grown up atheist. i think it stemmed from me being KICKED OUT of sunday school the first day i went...

somehting about learning about the whole yin and yan concept, and then applying that to my own personal drawing of god in the form of ur tradition man on a big chair in the clouds, but with horns and a tail... lets just say t didnt go down to weelll...

but i converted at a christian youth festival/camp thing. Id started going to church with my friend just cause i thought the whole religion thing was interesting and wanted to know more about it. and one thing turned to another and i became a *born-again* christian.

i feel kind of bad, becasue verytime i go to a festival or have like a full on sermon or worship or something at church i always say *im gonna stop tkaing drugs* but i love partying. And i feel bad becase i neglect my faith quite a bit. so im really bad that way... I mean, ive been known to say at Soul Survivor (great big christian youth fstival) ... "ohmigosh! this is soooo much better than drugs!"

ii do feel bad becasue i neglectmy faith. But i find so much consolidatation i that even if i do do drugs, or sin or whatever - Jesus died on the cross for MY sins.

He paid the eternal price for my mistakes.

and God will love me no matter what i do, there is nothing tht i do that can make him love me less...

...but i do feel guilty becasue part of being christian is that we *should* strive to be like jesus. Go show the compassion and love and faith that He had...

...and i know that i dont do that enough...
 
ALL religions have something worthwile in them for the growth of any individual......... but all religions also have a lot of stuff in them I don't agree with. There are so many simularaties amongst relgions that it is possible that they are all explaining the same thing and reflect how distorted truths get over time. ie- maybe the Christian concept of heaven is the same as the Hindu concept of Maksa or breaking through the painful cycle of death and rebirth. I think any belief and truth has to come from experience... so god should be something that you experience yourself and is beyond describing properly to anyone else. I've had very spiritual experiences and my truths come from these.... not from blind faith :D

pardon my ignorance, but isnt agnosticism holding a belief that there IS a god, u just dont know which one?

where as athiesm would be the total dis-belief in any higher power?

correct me if im wrong, its just that i would like to know, coz if i am wrong, i have just made a fool of myself on another message board :\
 
an atheist believes that no god (of any kind, and presumably no form of higher power) exists.

an agnostic, otoh, thinks that it is impossible to know either way (whilst also generally thinking that this makes any such belief pointless).

technically, a true atheist can never really exist, because it's impossible to prove one way or the other. thus, most of the time the differentation between the two labels is actually more a case of just how unlikely a person thinks the existence of god is - so, someone who calls themselves an atheist is most likely just someone who (surprisingly enough ;)) doesn't have proof, but certainly thinks that the odds of any god existing are exceedingly slim. an agnostic, though, might be someone who is a little more open to the possibility...well that or they just like sticking to the dictionary definition of stuff :)
 
Think its bout time i replied thoughtfully to this

Blossom.... i know how u feel. ive been christian (of a sort, too many diff religions stemming down from the same source) for my entire life. 8o my parents are very involved in the church, and so am i, im a leader of the youth group (yeh i kno its halarious) so i organise camps and outings regularly. my parents are the type that r like: no smoking, no drugs, no tats, no drinking execivly, no sex or foul play before marrige, etc etc. my bro got caught havin sex so to say and they were heart broken and angry and i think they felt like they had failed. wot they dont know about me cant hurt them, so its best they dont find out anything.

now i care and believe in my faith, sure every1 questions some things and i do too, but i still have faith. i am a good person and always try to help people if i can but only when they ask. i dont bible bash or anything like that tho, i wont mention religon unless im asked about it.i do feel guilty bout certain things: drugz in particular, but take mdma for instance if it was legal and made safely with no other crap in it, moraly its wrong coz it changes ur character, but in reality it makes u feel like ur in heaven.

i am proud to be christian but im not as strict as my parents. i know there are many other ppl in BL that have similar situations. if u wanna give me crap about my faith go ahed, it will just prove u arent a good person at heart, and no mater what faith u are if any, that in the end is all that matters.

well thats me... oh and if any1 wants to talk bout this or they just wanna shot the preverbial shit im on msn most of the time and i will listen if im available:)

edit: the other thing is... OMG some of the girls at church are so fukin hot (hey im a guy its only natural)
 
^^^ it's good to see a reasonable view of religion from within it (many of the christians that i've come across are annoyingly conservative with a lot of bullshit fundamentalist views).
 
I thought this thread deserved a bump, as it's a strong issue in which I'm sure everyone has to relate to in some way,



I don't believe in any religion, especially any that follow "The Bible".....

I think it's a 2000 year old out-dated book, yet people still proclaim it "references" issues at hand in the year 2000...

In my honest opinion, if there was this all powerful "God" and he hasn't shown his face once in 2000 odd years, I doubt he exists at all....

The Bible doesn't prove that "God" even existed, what it does prove is there are no scientific facts to back it up with.


but there are Evolution Facts to back up scientific theories, to which makes religion all look rather silly.

religion is an outdated, fucked up, bigoted fucking concept. and whilst "hate" is too strong a word to describe what i feel to those who subscribe to most religions (buddhism is the one that i wouldn't lump in with the rest which immediately springs to mind), i can't say i find it a great idea.

that said, i'm very glad your friend is okay - i've had people in similar situations, and it's really stressful. hope he recovers well man :)

also, miracles don't happen. there's a nice quote floating round that i don't remember, but it's something along the lines of "miracles don't contradict nature; miracles only contradict what we know about nature". and i think it's true. let's just say i'm on vincent's side, not jules'.

You're not the only one. I think its a very narrow view, and take great insult.

I was blessed by the Dalai Lama while I was in my mother's stomach. I've been blessed by him twice since then. So in the religious sense, yes, i've been blessed ;)

Both my parents are very strong Buddhists, and to label all religions as an "outdated, fucked up, bigoted fucking concept" is just simply an uneducted view.

I can understand why people make such rash calls based on so many holy wars, hatred to other religions and so forth, but knocking someone's beliefs is just as bad as persecuting against religions that don't agree with yours.

Hatred is hatred, and acceptance is acceptance. We live in a world where acknowledging and accepting people's beliefs, no matter how extreme they are, is the only way to promote peace. I understand the irony of knocking 1234's beliefs about religion, but you get my drift.

I know 1234 is a nice guy, well read, and very understanding, so i'm not upset, but be aware that there are members of this board, and society in general, that embrace and cherish religion as a given part of their everyday lives.
 
^^^ a fairly reasonable view, to counter my somewhat unreasonable comments. whilst i stand by my views in regards to the concept of (most) religion(s), the way i phrased things was admittedly childish and pointlessly aggravational.

i appreciate your articulate rebuttal, mr. horse :)

i might start up another religion thread (and split these posts into it) if i can get my head around the issue a little better tonight, but for the moment let's get things back on-topic.

nothing to see here, move along, move along ;)
