Redesign the Bluelight logo - part II

^i don't think the lightbulb is really sufficient. actually, i don't see any image as accurately conveying what the site has become.
that's why i reckon another word may be appropriate (like "Sanctuary").

I like the light bulb . .. it is there to signify something . .

it's hard for me to imagine how to sum up the mission of bluelight in such a small space. i like the idea of illumination and so i stuck with the lightbulb theme.

Don't take it personally, just my opinion, but I think the light bulb is ridiculous, too much of a literal symbol....like the pop interpretations to dance that Pans People used to do on TOTP in the UK in the 1970's.

Couple this with the word LIGHT in block capitals and I think you are using a hammer to crack a nut.

Look kids, we are the 'LIGHT', and just in case you don't get it, here's a lightbulb to show you we mean business....

..the words 'harm reduction' are surely more relevant than a lightbulb.

^ why would i take it personally. your opinion has absolutely nothing to do with me.

for those who are critical of the contributions so far, consider contributing something of your own? change a lightbulb instead of moaning about the darkness, if you will? :)

i like these 2 quite a bit.

i like a few of the others as well, but dont think they would look good at the top left of the screen. i quite like the simplicity of the one that is used now. it looks good. im not so sure how tambourine-man's logo i posted would look, but i think it (or something like it) could work.

The Bluelight! is jaunty, the "e" in harme is both classy and reflects the board's "e"cstasy roots, and the funky spelling of reduction gives street cred!

I don't like it, it looks too muck like the 'Toys "R" Us' logo.

johnny1, this is a forum logo, not a rave flyer. ;):p

now since name abbreviations are all the rage here ...

Hi, sorry to interrupt on a subject of which I know nothing, but I really like this effect. When I think of a 'bluelight' I think of getting bluelighted by the police when driving, and this captures that light effect quite well. It's also the same effect as ambulance lights (obviously) and due to the harm reduction nature of this board the emergency services and drug use are inextricably linked whether we like it or not.

It also looks like a blue sun and a horizon, which seems symbolic of hope.

This seems more pertinent to me than a lightbulb or pill effects. Everyone here is very skilled though it seems.

It was just a joke. I have no design talent. SA said we could have fun with it, so I did. =D

I do appreciate what others have done, though!

and this is class. For the same reasons.

I love this. Although I'd hate to see the logo change (I'm not a change kinda guy)...I think this one is very appropriate and classy.

And we are nothing if not classy around these parts...right?

For the love of god and all that is holy, avoid using Photoshops basic layer effects and filters. They look tacky and unprofessional. There are better ways to add highlights and dimension than using the plastic wrap filter and bevel/emboss. The issue with the filter bevels is they tend to muddy the colors. It's one of the major flaws to Photoshops resident lighting effects. You can get far greater results that look a lot more polished by doing the bevels and highlights manually. There are tons of great and easy techniques for this.

Hell, you'd be surprised what simply duplicating the layer, giving it a hefty dose of gaussian blur, then reselecting the outline of the original layer, inverting the selection and deleting that portion of the blurred layer, then either darkening or lightening the blurred layer could do to give you a subtle, more polished look of depth or dimension. Or try selecting the layer, creating a new layer and filling the new selection with a gradient that goes from 100% to transparent. Play with it a little until it looks good, then try moving the selection around a little and see what happens when you remove bits here and there.

Regarding the image with the pills showing through, try eliminating the bevel from the strokes outline. Darken the color of the stroke some, then select the layer with the pills. GO to image>adjustments>hue/saturation and knock the saturation down to about -50, -60... boost the lightness up to about +25 and then play with the hue slider and see what colors jump out at you. The goal is to keep the pills visible and identifiable, but make them a little less obvious... a little more understated.

In the meantime I'll see if I can track down some tutorial sites that show some basic techniques for adding sharper, slicker looking bevels and highlights. I may even write some quick ones of my own when I get home from work tomorrow.

^^
Constructive enough for ya?

That's very grand of you. Other people might sometimes take offence to criticism of their art from someone who hasn't even contributed themselves, hence my rider.

for those who are critical of the contributions so far, consider contributing something of your own? change a lightbulb instead of moaning about the darkness, if you will?

As I said in response to my first criticism of Tambos, my tech skills are far too limited to contribute in that way. If you feel this should exempt me from the thread, and bar me from art galleries the world over, just say the word Alasdair dear boy.

not at all. your opinion is as valid as the next person's. i'm just inviting you to consider that your opinion may change if you try to change the light-bulb rather than moaning about the darkness (pun absolutely intended) :)

if you have no tech skills, use a different tool...
