Olympics - Beijing 2008

After watching the women's single all-around finals last night I'm convinced the Chinese are cheating. Even the commentators commented on how screwy the judges were scoring the Chinese.

Because the commentators are not biased? 8)

How do you explain the scoring for the floor exercises then?

When the Americans score higher it is fair, and when they don't there is obviously some manipulation happening??

Why can't we just congratulate the winners, and praise their accomplishments? Afterall, isn't that what the olympics are all about?

I agree. I think there was something mysterious going on with the gymnastics scoring. BUT I WAS SO HAPPY WHEN the US girls got gold and silver. I jumped out of bed and started screaming i was so happy.. because the way the judging was going i thought for sure the Chinese would win. But the last two routines the US girls did were EXCELLENT.. if the Chinese had won after those last two routines-- they would have looked like they were cheating and if they were cheating it has to look like they're NOT cheating and that would have been to obvious.

You never know... a few of the judges could have gotten a 'gift' from the Chinese government although THAT IS ILLEGAL but shit, it happens, it happens in every damn arena, it wouldn't be a first.. that's for sure. And this is China we're talking about. I'm not saying anything bad about the Chinese people but the Chinese Government is another story. The People of the country seem very nice and gracious to us there. They even chanted U-S-A after the girls won.

If there is an Olympic investigation i don't think the Chinese will be caught. But I was a gymnast and i know how the world of Gymnastics works, i know a DAMN GOOD routine when i see it and the Chinese were getting WAY TO high of scores. One girl on the bean did balance checks like 5 times and she got a high 15 when it was clearly a low 15. And what really got me was Luikens (sp) uneven bars routine, it was PERFECTCTION and she stuck the landing and she got a lower score than the Chinese girl who DID NOT stick her landing.

SOMETHING WAS UP WITH THE SCORING!!! The announcers commented on it as gently as they could.. you could hear it in their voices.

I think the Chinese men's team deserved their gold, they were perfect! But, the woman's team received amazingly high scores. Scores that should have been much much lower. I was starting to get upset too. Imagine how the poor girls felt, doing perfect routines and getting mid-15's.

Also they need to go back to the old scoring method, the 9.1's, 9'8's the famous 10.0 like how Mary-lou retton got, Nadia, Olga etc. This half/half scoring is ridiculous. There was no need to change the scoring method IMO! I guess a 17 would be equivalent to a 10.0.

Of course this cheating will never be proved and it's very sad. But who knows, maybe a few years from now something will come out. But, i believe in my heart-of-hearts that there was some cheating going in with the scoring/judging, weather it be 'pay off's', 'Gifts','Money' or something else. I'd like to believe that the Olympic judges are in this with their hearts but sometime when money is flashed in a persons face they'll do things they normally wouldn't do. And of course... i could be wrong.. but I'm not the only one who thinks something fishy is going on.

But it was a beautiful thing.. those two darling girls getting GOLD and SILVER. And me being the sap i am for gymnastics.. when the American Anthem started playing i started getting all choked up-- IT WAS BEAUTIFUL!!! One of the best nights I've had in a long time.

If the Chicago gets the 2016 Olympics i am soooooooo going.. i don't care if i have to save money for 8 years!!! I just hope my Grandma is still healthy enough 8 years from now to accompany me to the games. She's 84 now, she'd be 90 in 2016. I told her the other night "If the games go to Chicago in 2016 we're going Grandma" and she says "Oh hun, I'll be long gone" I said to her "NOOOOOOOOOO don't say that!!" It wouldn't be the same without my Grandma. We've watched the Olympics together since i was a kid. AND my Grandma is from Chicago so that would be even more beautiful if we could both attend the games if they get to Chicago. I still have distant family there. So it would be great.

Sorry all.. i get pretty emotional when it comes to the Olympics. I don't know if that's because i trained at an Olympic Gymnastics academy and as a 12 year old i dreamed of being in the Olympics or if it's just i love how the whole world comes together for the Olympics. I don't know... but i get emotional about it. So i apologize for my passionate reply lol

^ Sorry, but I'm a math nazi. If she's 84 now, she'll be 92 in 2016.
:\

Awesome reply by the way. Its great to hear from someone who knows a lot about the subject at hand. (I too wish it would just go to 10.0, sounds so much cooler than 15.485 or some lame number)

Oops sorry.. i was thinking about my typing/grammar and not the math. My brain can't achieve high scores in both at the same time LOL.

And yea.. the 10.0 system is much clearer and there is less math in figuring the score. The new system has way to much math and room for mistakes. I'm not sure why they system was changed, i think I'll google that and try and find out why it was changed.

Liukin floor exercise was great. At as critical a point as the floor exercises took place people would have rioted if they would have gave her an unfair score. There really wasn't even anything to deduct.

Fuck the commentators. I don't even know much about gymnastics scoring and even I could tell the balance beam scores for the Chinese gymnast compared to the Americans was fucked up. How do you explain an equal score with the starting difficulty being the same for both gymnasts, the American only having 2 balance checks and the Chinese gymnast having at least 5? Those little 12-year-olds shouldn't have been allowed to compete in the first place. They owe us a gold from the team competition.

No, that's not the case. I was a gymnast (i know, i said that before) and i have a trained eye. If an American gets a low score because they made mistakes i.e., Balance checks, stepping out of bounds, not sicking a landing, changing a routine or pass than yes..they should get a low score but if you were watching last night the Chinese were getting higher scores even though they were making more mistakes. A good example is the beam: Chinese girl made about 5 balance checks, American girl made 1-- Chinese girl gets higher score. Yes, she had a higher start value BUT the mistakes should have counteracted the higher score.

And i even said the Chinese men deserved their gold, they didn't make mistakes, the American guys did. But, with the woman's there were inconsistencies with the scoring. You make mistakes you get 10ths taken off period and the Chinese were not getting 10ths taken off. It was clear as day.

I think the Chinese girls are brilliant gymnasts and if they deserved a high score than they should get a high score but if they're making mistakes and not getting anything taken off, I'm sorry.. something is wrong.

Heck.. i think it's great when someone gets gold in their own country, it's a beautiful thing but fair is fair, rules are rules, age limits are age limits... mistakes get points taken off, it's simple as that and it was clear as day that this wasn't happening. It was MORE than obvious! It was painfully obvious actually. Which amazes me.

BBC shows some highlights.. but might not be available for people outside country to watch

Its on terrestrial TV surely?

Yes the new scoring system is ridiculous. The judges tried everything they could to make China win the team, and they did. They tried to do the same thing with the all around event, but they could not deny that the top 2 gymnists in the wolrd were the americansl.

yo china lost in womens gymnastics even while they had judges that were giving them higher scores and us lowere scores....hell ya America(what China??)

Timothy.. good point you got there!!

Can't wait for the individual medals where they compete on different apparatus. I think we'll kick some butt on that as well.

wow THAT RACE WAS INSANE.
I can't believe Phelps took it!

:)
Neither can I. I've never seen a race that close. It was definitely insane.

Seriously.

The Serbian guy had like 2 inches to go and Phelps had half a stroke, and he got him!

The Serbian guy was in front for the last 25m, and I thought he had it for all money, but Phelps with the TOUCH! Absolutely amazing!

I cant believe it... I mean I can't believe it. It frankly looks like the Croatian has him beat (to me). I wish I could see the underwater finish again, rather than the top down view. Jeez, if they didn't have the electronic scoring, can you imagine the pandemonium that would arise from this?

How good is Bolt?!?!! Was celebrating before he finished the race and still broke the 100m WR! lol

^ That was pretty awesome... The 100m is always a highlight for me.

He probably would have been .5 of a second faster if he had put his head down so to speak

:)
