NA/AA/rehab sayings that you like or hate

how does the saying go where they talk about people who are too smart or think too much? Its like you might be too smart to get better or something to that effect?

i like the point about ppl places and things.

i hate everything else, esp anything with the word "god" in it. not becuse i dont believe in a type of spiritual being however, its just that i think humans are a little more capable.

Anyone else think it's funny that the mythical Bill died from smoking like a chimney?

The more I think about it though, the more I realize these sayings - no matter how insulting to someone's intelligence - have a purpose. NA/AA is a life saver for many an addict/alcoholic, and let's be frank, the majority of junkies, addicts, and alcholics (and people in general for that matter) are pretty fucking stupid. The members on BL are an exception but there's a good reason. You have to be pretty smart to be doing drugs AND actively trying to look up how to make it safer. It also suggests that you have regular access to and knowledge of how to use a computer.

Yeah having them shoved down your throat sucks. Being forced into anything by the courts is a bummer but... the good meetings tell you to take what you can/want out of it and leave the rest.. even if you just get one good thing out of a meeting that helps keep you sober, it's worth it.

They're not all these AA/NA nazi's who worship the big book and just traded their drug addictions for slogans and a lot of coffee.

Yea, actually I kind of liked the meetinfs in bmore city because those guys have been THRU IT and talk about real stuff not being whiny little self righteous fucks at meetings where I am now... but its too far away to make that drive all the time or id be more interested

Yea its not all bad

Just no jobs up here and shitty meetings

The job thing being a much bigger problem right now as im trying to get outta my recovery house and with getting my hours cut to less then 20 a week and $10 an hr plus I got car payments this is nowhere in sight

I hate the god thing. I'm a Buddhist and don't believe in a higher power of any kind. I mean, do I have to convert to get clean?

I also hate the fact that they preach that you are powerless, but isn't feelings of powerlessness to reason lots of people become addicted? Why can't we say "you and only you can decide if you are gonna get clean. You have the power to do it and nothing anyone else does, even god, can do it for you."

The couple that piss me off...

"You are powerless over your addiction"
I think this can really demotivate people, and in most cases is simply not true. Really it is more along the lines of "using drugs has become a major source of motivation to you, to the extent that it severely interferes with life". But that doesn't mean you are powerless. You can always start tapering, it is just a matter of realizing you can improve your situation, and you need to do something that your body is telling is you is wrong at the moment.

If someone was completely powerless over their drug use than no recovery program would be at all effective. They're still doing most of the work themselves, regardless of how much support the group provides.

There are some addicts who are truly unable to stop their usage, because their cravings are as or nearly as powerful as thirst and hunger. Oliver Ameisen comes to mind. He was perfectly clear about how damaging his alcoholism was, yet he failed at every attempt to quit until he replaced it with another, less harmful drug that dealt with both his cravings and the anxiety that originally led to his addiction.

Yeah, of all the people I know, it's the addicts that tend to be shrewder and quite intelligent as a rule. Lets face it: you have to be pretty damn resourceful to feed a serious habit every day of the week; it's a full time thing, with no vacations and no holidays. Every addict I've known has seemed to be a keen student of psychology and human nature, and it can't be said that the average drug user doesn't know a hell of a lot about their DOC.

It's very ironic to me that for an organization that devoted to uncompromising abstinence, a great deal of it's members drink coffee and smoke cigarettes compulsively.

There are some (probably many) that the fellowships work well for-there's always a circle of people at meetings who have been clean for like 10, even 20 years plus in some cases . Personally, I had a bad experience with the fellowships in my town; the meetings I attended were clique-like, and the people were gossipy and two-faced. I understand not all meetings are like this, but I have to admit, it's really put me off.

This x9999999999999999999999999. I also have qualms about the higher power shit even tho I'm not even an atheist. I just don't think faith has any place in court mandated treatment. And there's also the fact they say alcohol is a disease and you will always have it... Oh yeah that's real motivating. I could go on and on lol.

Don't know if any of you have already watched this, but if you haven't you should...

It's certainly a physical disorder in its more severe stages.

^Doctors have pretty much proven addiction is a disease, because if you use long and hard, it will change your brain chemistry. That being said, don't ALL other medical diseases require a medical answer??? Thinking that "god" is going to cure you of your medical disease... Did god ever cure anybody from AIDS or cancer?? No, seems like those people are on lots of medicines. Addiction should take the same approach.
