Movies about the Rec drug scene

party monster is not bad
macaulay culkin taking ketamine, heroin etc.....
and fez off that 70s show is his gay boyfriend DJ keoki

51st state (also called formula 51 in some countries)
more about the rave scene. not much about actual drugs though.

Basketball Diaries (a biography - heroin, I think - US)
Boogie Nights (more about the US <Edit> porn industry though)
24 Hour Party People (funny but not for everyone and more about British
music scene)

<Edited to correct my mistake as mentioned by Robocop below. Boogie Nights was not about the Gay porn industry, just the porn industry>

I have seen all the mentioned titles, except the acid house. basketball dairies was good, trainspotting was excellent although it made heroin use look like too much fun, didnt like spun that much, requiem is definatly a good film, fear and loathing is my favourite probably... hillarious. my 2 cents

yeah spun and groove are pretty sweet, but boogie nights isnt about the gay porn industry tho? kos ive seen it many times and figured it was a movie (and a great one at that) based on the US porn industry in general, and also that particular porn star (forget his name sorry, the one with the massive dick lol)

a little off topic but..
requiem for a dream - holy crap, da ja vu, its like... perfect recreation of what happend to me. (the mother with the diet pills) but with add not overweight, even tho i lost weight

Permanent Midnight - Ben Stiller playing a heroin using screen writer. Based on the real character who was the writer for the american sit com "Alf'

Channel 10 has had a couple of these in the last two weeks in Sydney - Easy Rider and Half Baked.

And tonight, channel 9 has Sample People (about Aussie rave culture - although I haven't seen it yet so I'm just going on what I've been told).

Sounds interesting.

This was a first feature for Clinton, I was there, while he shot this mess back in Adelaide around 98...

Although I wasn't involved directly in the production, I was witness to the typically delusional behavior, post set, that went down,: the parties, the drugs, the illusionary glamor, really an example of what not to do when making a film, but also a byproduct of young, talented people getting caught up in classic ideologies of fame & worldly position.

Sample People; user comments

Didn't really enjoy Sample people, just lacked direction and not much of a storyline. That len guy (spaceboy) was one trippy character tho.

A Midsummer Night's Rave is a great film, about a group of people going to a rave (wouldn't u know!).
The actual rave isn't that crash hot but seeing all these people dropping mad pills, getting jaw grind and real messy, tis such a laugh!!!

I watched spun recently. Pretty shit film in my opinion. It lacked a good story line, the main character was fucking lame, and I don't think there is anything particularly interesting about people doing meth then driving around buying cold and flu tablets. One of the more lowly of the rec drug films.

I think the parody it assumes to play on the meth culture is quite funny actually :)

It's fairly accurate and makes you feel rather tense throughout the film (especially when the one guy is driving around while he leaves that girl bound and gagged in his apartment heh).

The Salton Sea with Val Kilmer is quite entertaining and has a reasonable plot to.

Ruski: yeah I can see how it is an interesting parody and captures the nature of meth abuse but it is still a boring and rather uneventful movie. I'll stick with fear and loathing and requiem for a dream

Dunno if it's already been mentioned. But i saw a shit hot movie last night on SBS. 'City of God'. Really good movie which is based on a true story. It's set in Brazil and is all about the the slums and its drug trade and 'gangsta' lifestyle.
