Movie Reviews Part 2 - The good, the bad and the ... rentals

I recently spent about 18 hours of my life watching the entire first season of "24" on DVD. I can honestly say it was pretty gripping...I watched it with 2 others and we were reluctant to go to sleep not knowing what happened in the next episode (we watched it over a few days). I know it might not be everyone's cup of tea, or you might have already seen it on tv last year..but if you haven't seen it yet and like a good action-thriller - and think you can stomach an average of 6 hrs a day suspense and plot twists (at the video store I rented it from it was $10 for 3 days), then I highly recommend it.

gangs of new york at the movies now. This movie is superbly done. great cinematography, great music to go with it, really great acting, specially from daniel day lewis. This is the whole package, and a must see. i learnt some american history too.

shitty crappy movies i do not recommend you see:
"The sweetest thing"
"Reign of Fire"
"Princess Diaries"
Thank god they were only rentals cause I would rather circumsize myself instead watch them in full!

JACKASS
Okay so its about people doing dangerous yet funny stunts but ill tell you what... it had me in tears the whole time... along with everyone else :)
big thumbs up from me

I saw The Hours the other day.
It was a brilliantly made film and the story was pretty good (although I did feel it dragged in certain points).
What made brilliant in my eyes was the way it was made, packed with symbolism and with the different era's mixed with brilliant cross overs. It wasn't the story which made it for me, although it was for my mum. I'd say this was because the film is based around issues that are affecting 3 middle aged women- an age group which I myself cannot relate to, but my mum obviously can.
Mum was enthralled by the story. I was enthralled by the detail and way it was made. altogether a really good movie.
**** (out of 5) :)

Just Married
It was corny, it was crap - rather get it on video ( when it comes out) if you've seen all the others and it's a pick between this and the "Princess Diaries"

lord of the rings: i'm glad i saw this & the 1st 1 in gold class, cos i would've become restless, but absolutely loved it ... apparently the next movie is 4 hours so gold class here i come again!!
Die another day: worst bond movie ever ... i enjoyed it but would've preferred 2 have seen it @ home ... not worth the $13 or whatever
catch me if u can: 5 stars ... SENSATIONAL!! great story line, actors ... A DEFINITE MUST SEE (wazza, me & emma said so) :)

Gangs of New York
As a movie that I really wasnt interested at all in seeing when we went to it, it turned out to be a rather impressive and enjoyable movie. It does got for quite a while (3hrs, which does suck when you need to go to the toilet an hour into the movie :\ ) but there is definately no major bits where the plot drags at all. Very intense, interesting story. You do kinda know where the story is going to go, its a pretty straightforward story, but how it gets you there is definately interesting! I think its definately worthwhile seeing if you like a bit of an epic tale.
Oh and yes, its set in the 1860's not present day New York. ;)
stace.

Hail Smoochy! Smooch hail, smooch hail! Completely brilliant movie that i could watch over and over! Bastard son of barny i luv you! Oh we'll get you of that smack oh yes we will, get that monkey right off your back oh yes we will! And smack can lead to crack oh yes it can!
Gangs of New York i found was alot better than it expected it to be. I have a personal interest in the subject matter as it will probably be the subject of my honours (if i get in) thesis and let me say that it was fairly historically accurate at least on face value, the gang names were correct and for the most part so were their nefarious activities. Although not all those gangs existed at the same time and i also think they over played the division between native and immigrant gangs- while both existed the most powerful gangs were those that over-arched such divides and also there was far more in-fighting between immigrant gangs, i think the plug-uglies and the dead rabbits hated each other. In in such conditions (which IMHO gangs portrayed brilliantly, the squaller and the mood of the film actually made you feel as if you were actually there). Also gang activity was not just confined to the five points, a point which the film only mentions in passing. Gotta love the violence in this movie, it counterpoints perfectly a violent and brutal period of history. Normally when i see a leo movie i come out of it wanting to slice his face off, but this didn't occur for gangs so it must be good.
Big ups for Donnie Darko as well, it tripped me out and provoked some of the most vivid and disturbing dreams i've ever had.
For those who like black american comedy one word- Pootie fucking Tang!

i've heard a lotta bad opinions on daredevil, but i quite enjoyed the movie despite some creative license with the story.

i suppose being a fan of the comic helped.

The latest round of the cinema titles has really dropped its arse hasnt it.

I remember putting up 5 reviews in a row of all completely brilliant film, and mentioning is was kinda worried we couldnt maintain the quality level.

The last month or so has been a real testament to that.

Anywayyyyyyyy

My Big Fat Greek Wedding

I havent bothered to pay any attention to this film and just watched it get world wide press and huge local publicity. That said I had written it off as I thought it was just another comedy attacking a strong cultural angle.

Not so. Not so at all. A beautiful movie, showing the true and honest fight of the human spirit for individuality even in the face of tremendous odds. An inspiring look at the social chasm between small, single child related families and huge european families with aeons of tradition.

A real positive for the film that the perspective given is totally unbiased and really highlights both sides of the family coin.

9 out of 10.

A triumph of the human spirit with a beautiful romantic undertone.

Avoid Johnny English like SARS.

Seriously one of the worst movies I've had the misfortune to see. The only film I can ever remember walking out of, a complete and total waste of time and money.

:X

Robin Williams - Live @ the Met

I highlight this not specifically because of the quality of the work As always its an excellent performance by Williams - I find that just about everything I've ever seen of his is of this grade, a true testament to the man. But because of the interesting links between his subject matter used in the late eighties, and the current state of world events.

Quite a few of his subject 'pieces' centre around things such as the state of firearm ownership within the country (America) and also the state of international affairs, and the countries outlook towards aggression on other soverign lands.

To sit and watch a true master of his chosen art, speak openly about what is obviously a very public concern, and then see the exact events he is talking about transpiring before our very eyes is quite interesting, and then kinda humourous in a very black sense.

Bowling for Columbine fans should quite easily pick up the very simliar concerns and quotes (15 years ago... go figure hey), and people that are even semi aware of the 'We'll bomb you' style consensus on America will see regular ground.

From a comedic point of view, pick the 'Of Mice and Men' reference :)

How to Loose a Guy in 10 days

Wandered all the way from the middle of the Western Suburbs over to Chadstone tonight - was a toss between this and Shanghai nights. Flipped a coin and it landed on tails for HowToLoose... kinda glad cus I would have got bored with Jackie Chan on a friday night - surprise find though ! HowToLoose a guy is an absolute gem.

For every word, flirt, trap, tactic or little thing youve done with a friend over the opposite sex is shown in this movie. And shown from both the male and female perspectives. It's got so many things anyone in a Relationship with laugh their asses of at - and also highlights the transition from a flirt to a lover.. a strong romance theme, kept alive with some really viscious and often hilarious interaction between the lead roles.

Definately an amazing 'chick flick' - but also a 'chick flick' that will leave every guy who's ever put a little thought into impressing a girl with a smile on his face.

8 / 10 (plus a bit more, im trying to bring down my average rating :p)

Some movies I have seen lately.

Boondock Saints - If you haven't seen this, DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR AND SEE IT NOW! It's all you should be told about how good this movie is, no need to know the plot, it kinda contains a lot in a really subliminal way. Check the message boardhere if you have seen it and need to learn any of the little things you may have missed... 9.5/10

Minority Report - I thought this was just going to be a movie with a lame plot but great special effects with Tom Cruise in it (I can't stand his acting) but the movie actually was very good to watch. Nothing spectacular but none the less, a good movie. 7/10

8mile - Not a bad movie, thought it was rather slow with a few highlights - namely Eminem's rapping contests (few and far between though). 7/10

Jay And silent bob strike back - A funny movie, once again, not a bad movie but just not great. Good way to have a laugh over a couple hours. 7.5/10

Dirty Deeds - Now this movie was weird. It had all the hallmarks of being a cool flick but the ending just totally made everyone here watching it go 'what the fuck? That was SHIIIIIIIT'. It's a watchable movie until *boom* the end...... 6/10 (8.5/10 until the end heh)

And last but not least, the 2 Eddie Murphey stand up shows - Raw + Delerious. HELL HELL HELL FUNNY, non stopped made everyone laugh during the shows and did we laugh! A somewhat timeless standup that can be watched over and over. Love both of them! 9/10

Fat Pizza

So unbelieveably bad! Funny for all of 2 minutes (if that) with jokes that just kept being repeated and repeated. One of the few movies i've considerded leaving halfway through (and only didn't cause it was raining and fricken cold outside). Absolute crap - and i liked the first series of the show.
2/10

24 hour party people - michael winterbottom (director) RULES!! the film depicts the rise of the punk scene in manchester and follows the music history through joy division (into new order), happy mondays and touches on the beginning of the rave scene.... during the final scenes of the film it struck me how incredible this film was - original and funny while staying faithful to musical history. was worth it just to see how they depicted sean ryder in all his drugged up glory....

i don't know if it is still showing anywhere but definitely grab it on video when it comes out....

next on the list - the magdalene sisters and the good girl
bk:)

Dreamcatcher was alright, albeit a bit wonky at the end.

but the highlight was the feature before Dreamcatcher - Final FLight of the Osiris. It's not bad, albeit too short but it did get me and my friends all excited for Matrix Reloaded.

And not to mention looking forward to a soundtrack by Juno Reactor.

I don't know, Genasauris... I just saw How to lose a guy in 10 days , and I thought it was kind of average. :\

Kate Hudson is simply GORGEOUS, not to mention *drool* Matthew McConaughey... but.... eh, the storyline was stupid, the plot predictable and the only really "funny" scene was the one where she crashed the boy's card night.

I think Kate's going to have a stellar comedy career like her mum, but this movie didn't do it for me. And I'm a HUGE fan of the chick flick. 5/10.

The tracker

I watched the tracker yesterday,
absolute crap!!!
didn't even watch it all, the slowest and most boringist movie i've ever seen!!!
DON'T HIRE IT!!!
