LeBron James VS Kobe Bryant

sorry Kobe fans, it looks like LeBron just schooled Kobe and Company on a vanglorious Christmas Day game. LeBron James bests Kobe Bryant today and has now won three of their last four meetings in Los Angeles.

want to know how it fares when Kobe plays LeBron, head-to-head?

James Bryant
Wins 7 - 5
PPG 26.8 - 25.1
FG pct 42.0 - 41.5
RPG 7.3 - 5.4
APG 6.9 - 5.2

statistically it's close, but LeBron is better. and at the end of his carreer, I believe LBJ will have more rings and less accusations of alleged rape.

So you're saying that you would be willing to wager that LeBron will have AT LEAST *FIVE* NBA titles (PLUS the ones that Kobe will inevitably win in his thirties, with this amazing supporting cast he has) by the time he's through, even though LeBron STILL hasn't won so much as one more Finals GAME than you have?

Name the stakes.

It's gonna get real comedic should Shaq be traded to the Cleve.

Cha-Ching.....

I don't have much of an opinion on this topic, and most of what I'd say falls to shit stirring, honestly. But I would be remiss to not point out that LA has typically had better supporting players for Kobe as well as better coaching for the players he has to work with. Do I think LeBron will win as many rings or MVPs? Probably not. And I sincerely believe while he *might* win a Championship this year (and perhaps an MVP in the process....since he'd be 'due' 8) in may people's eyes)....I only believe he's going to win multiple rings once he moves to a team with more talent (or an assload more talent comes to CLE....not likely). THEN you'll have people undercutting his credit saying it took all these good players to get him there :\ Um, hello....that's how Kobe got there! Not saying either is NOT a great player, but the point I'm making is that they are singular, and championships are won by teams. Kobe's had good to great teams (and he's been their star, making them better). LeBron has had okay teams (and he's been their star, making them better).

I know the point of the thread is 'who is the better player?' But people want to use rings as a standard, when those are won by teams. And MVPs as a standard, when those are given to players on good to great teams. LeBron has not had the opportunity to meet those standards like Kobe has, and why are you using team generated criteria to argue player strength?

The most comparable basis for 'player strength' that I could see are the year over year stats. And, you may have to compare Year1 to Year1 rather than 2009 to 2009, to understand player development and raw ability....but then people argue that the league was better/worse back then. If you compare 2009 to 2009 type of basis so they have equal opponents, then you are left with an established player (Kobe) versus someone whose role has continued to evolve* and he's still developing (LeBron).

*I know Kobe fans will say he picks up his role as the team needs him, being the defender, the scorer, etc. However he has always remained 'the guy' whereas in recent years LeBron, either by his own decision or by coaching (I don't know) has tried to take on the role of 'the scorer' when he hadn't been honing the 'killer instinct for years' like Kobe who came in with that role, or 'the leader' which Kobe was never really asked to play until recently...and I'm not sure his Laker team mates feels that way about him, or 'the assist guy making everyone else better' when LeBron has players who simply aren't up to speed for dealing with a guy that can dish it like that, and Kobe's team mates never had to think 'will I get the ball' because the answer was a big fat NO from the beginning. LeBron has been asked to wear a LOT of different hats over the years, and he's worn each of them poorly, IMO, until recently when he's started to get a good enough cast around him to allow him to blend the roles as needed and he's gained enough experience to play the roles as needed. Kobe? Brought in as an assassin, always been one = solid stats and not as well rounded in the other roles (always had other players that filled them).

So, who do you want? A killer that you KNOW will make the shot and has proven it over and over? Or a jack of all trades, who, when he has as many years under his belt as Kobe, can do it all - whatever you ask of him? My answer to the question of the thread is Kobe is the best player. Has been and is today; but the day is coming soon when LeBron's overall abilities start to mean more than Kobe's scoring ability, at which point my answer will change. That day may come sooner than Laker fans will admit.

LBJ won the MVP last year, just so ya know :)

and I think that the way the Cavaliers absolutely embarassed LA on their home court, that they actually have a chance of finally winning a Finals. the Cavs are finally spending money on getting James the players around him that he deserves. this could be his year.

you are right TLB; people are comparing rings. Kobe has more rings and MVPs because well, he's been around a lot longer and he has had a supporting cast that could probably win a couple rings without him.

however, one-on-one stats clearly demonstrate that LeBron James has gotten the best of Kobe Bryant. sorry Kobe fans, this is empirical evidence we are talking about.

can I say one more thing? I think that Kobe is pretty classless. case in point, his devasting Christmas Day loss (hate to bring it up again my left-coasters). but every time things don't go Kobe's way he instantly looks around for the nearest ref to start bitching him out. you can tell he is trying to lobby for a foul. good gods man, it's not like they give the superstars of the NBA the benefit of the doubt for fouls anyways.

as soon as Kobe's team starts shitting the bed, he starts yelling at his teammates. have you ever seen LeBron do anything of the matter? LBJ is a true player and he lives and dies with his team, which is why most sports fan respect him a little more than Kobe and his disrespectful antics.

think of the kids watching the game, you know? we should all be good role models.

Kobe had three rings by age 23.

LeBron hasn't won a single Finals GAME, and he turns 25 this week.

Keep using regular season statistics (like compiling a 66-16 record, putting up ridiculous individual stats, and then proceeding to get run off the court by the same exact team that the Lakers then proceeded to run off the court the very following series) as your main source of evaluating players, and you keep showing your lack of knowledge of what's important in this game.

This isn't football, where dozens of players and another dozen coaches all play significant roles regarding who has the best team.

In basketball, on the other hand, since there are so few players involved, and since a single superduperstar can decide to TAKE OVER IMPORTANT GAMES BY HIMSELF, YES, I think it's pretty fucking relevant to distinguish those who have made SIX (6) Finals appearances, and have won FOUR (4) titles from those who have made ONE (1) Finals appearance, in which his team got SWEPT.

I can't believe LeBron fans STILL delude themselves into thinking that the world is flat.

I don't believe the game of basketball is as individualistic as you believe it to be.

case in point, the Miami Heat. how did they go to Champions with D-Wade and Shaq to a team that barely makes the Eastern Conference playoffs? D-Wade has basically no help in his pitiful starting lineup.

honestly I don't even think Kobe is the best player in Lakers history. that award goes to Wilt Chamberlain, one of the all-time greats.

as soon as Kobe's team starts shitting the bed, he starts yelling at his teammates. have you ever seen LeBron do anything of the matter?

lmao your right lebrons jesus christ, he never wears NY hats when things get rough with the cavs, or walks off the court without shaking the opposing teams hands.

theres no way LBJ getting his first ring this year. I cant even see them winning the eastern conf let alone a ring. LA shot some fluke 30 something percent against the cavs in their last meeting, thats definetily not going to happen for 4 games.

yeah, I knew the shaking hands comment was coming up - but hey, with all the prima donnas in the NBA I will give him that one misstep.

and obviously, you are not in on your LBJ trivia. the reason he sports the NY Yankees hats is because they are his favorite team in baseball. his favorite team in basketball is the Chicago Bulls. and his favorite football team is the Dallas Cowboys. just like any dude who is 24 and grew up in the 90s when these teams were the creams of the crop.

he is a fairweather fan, but you're right he is Jesus Christ-like. we won't hold these facts against him, will we? at least he doesn't cut his own teammates down whenever they start losing, ala Kobe.

Kobe motivates the players around him to be the best they can, ala 4 rings

not that it matters but it doesn't look like Kobe's players are particularly having fun when he bitches them around as soon as he starts missing layups.

LeBron be dancing, man. dancing all over the place and dancing in commercials.

but now we are just arguing about silly things, like this thread seems to always degenerate into.

they sure looked like they were having fun when they were holding a championship trophy over their heads. ;)

id take kobe over lebron any day. im not discrediting king james, cause hes an absolute beast, but kobes proven time and time again hes clutch when it counts. 4 rings to 0 rings. Lebron has to win at least 2 'ships b4 being compared to kobe.

damn LeBron James just schooled Kobe and the Lakers for the second time this year. the Cavaliers always have the LA's number, besides last year when they lost both match-ups.

LBJ was the best player in the league last year, and I think that he will be the MVP this year (followed by Carmello Anthony).

one thing I noticed about LBJ/Kobe, when they were playing one another, is that LBJ and Kobe usually score the same amount of points. however, Kobe ends up shooting the balls about 10-15 times more than LeBron. it sucks that Kobe has to drop 35 attempts to get 35 points....

King James all the way fuck Kobe, Fuck the Lakers

but on a more rational note

at this point in both thier careers Kobe is prob a better shooter, at least a better clutch shooter (ie i wouldnt choose anyone else playing right now to take that last second shot to win the game)

but i believe Lebron is an overall better player.

he takes it to the hole like nobodys business
he shoots good
hustles like a mother fucker on D
good shot blocker n rebounder

all around better player IMHO

this year is Lebrons year also by the way, last year was Kobes it seems

not to mention supporting cast.

who's on the Cavs besides Lebron? Shaq? 8) hes not what he used to be.

kobe has a great team n they usually go into games thinkin they will win cuz "they're the shit" n then they get schooled every so often cuz there isnt enough heart on thier team

Pau Gasol, Bynum, n others for Kobe

lmao he only has a finger thats broken in TWO places on his right shooting hand8)

I can't believe this is STILL even a discussion!

Who's the NBA's SECOND BEST PLAYER - LeBron or Dwayne Fucking Wade - would provide for a much more even-matched debate.

LBJ already took D Wade and Kobe Bryant back to elementary school this season.

the evidence is empirical, my mang
