I fly back to NZ about 4 times a year, however I just had a look at the availability and prices to get back over Christmas and it looks like it'll cost about $850 minimum to fly to Wellington from Brisbane! And to top it off, most of the available tickets fly through other city's, making the trip about 12 hours. What a fucking joke! For that money I could go to Fiji, or Bali, or Thailand, or even stay in Queensland where I'd be much happier anyway...

Do you think if I wait till next month there will be more flights released? Anyone know any good tricks?

I purchased tickets a little while ago (around 6 weeks) and got return flights for two from Sydney to Christchurch for $950. This is flying on Christmas Eve and returning on New Years Eve, flight in Virgin (Pacific) Blue, flight back Air New Zealand.

Unfortunately I think you've missed the boat on the cheap fares. I searched all of the airlines and all of the days (as I was fairly flexible). It was also made cheaper as I paid for the return flight in Australian dollars but it was quoted in NZ dollars so I made a currency gain (I think that is really only possible with Air New Zealand).

Just to give you an idea, I did a quick search in December, and came up with airfares totalling over $1,000. Fuck, you guys get screwed flying into Wellington. Christchurch/Auckland is so much cheaper (as Jetstar/Pacific Blue fly there).

But perhaps flying from Brisbane is more expensive (although surely not that much more).

Try using www.hot.co.nz - it has the best/most innovative online booking engine in the world. So it will allow you to compare a number of airlines. The only disadvantage is that it only allows you to search flying out of NZ and back from Australia. But you can play with the dates to still get the best flights.

Cheers THR!, thats a great website. Still not looking good on price or the fact I'll be tiki touring around the country before I end up where I want to go but hey, it's a great search engine!

wellington - the hutt, its where everything is, hence my several years of living in the hutt than anywhere else in wellington. Though Te Aro valley is pretty cool.. Ive also lived in oz for a while back in the day, and about to head off to melburn (for a couple days - digweed/cup). My fav oz city, reminds me so much of wellington.

EDIT: L&P goes nicely with 1,4b but definately not GBL!! I miss rashuns when I go to oz, and also the cigarettes arent as good as the kiwi ones they seem to be more flulfy, unless times have changed..

Forgot to add, I miss cookie time cookies when I go OS in general. Especially the triple chocolate or the choc fix one (has huge chunks of chocolate in it and goes good with weed ha!).

For the record, I ended up paying $800 return to Wellington from Brisbane. And a heads up, probably don't use Flight Centre....

I thought I'd see what they could do and spent over an hour with them today. The best they said they could do was $1300 and I had to fly all over the place to get there. I asked about Pacific Blue and they said they had tried that too. So I went home and did my own search again and easily found the $800 fare on www.webjet.com.au I think it's a new site. I also confirmed a similar price on the virgin blue website.

When I rang Flight Centre again to use their "Price Beat Guarantee" they said that they couldn't beat it.... So, yeah....not only do they suck so does their "guarantee".

On the upside, roll on Rashuns, REAL fish and chips, REAL fishing, and PARTY PILLS!!!

chopped_chimp: the shop by the roundabout at Tannum Sands, south of Gladstone for the best fish and chips; cooked just like the NZ f&c I remember. Locally caught fresh fish is filleted as it's ordered. So, if you're driving past the turnoff and hungry it's well worth the extra 40 min to & from the highway. No paua fritters though...damn.

Can you still get Griffins and Gregs products in NZ? Griffins gingernuts were the BEST

person: In a thread a couple of years ago where you described the Hutt as the place to live, I mentioned how I remembered the windy weather of Petone. However, there's one or two other things that form a big part of how I remember the place.

Way back before many of the wipper snappers 'round here were born, once a year for three years I stayed on the Upper Hutt trunk line while I attended Petone Technical Institute (now called Weltec I believe). The adventures I had and things I witnessed are indelibly stamped on my memory, particularly those involving my stay at the Trentham Hostel in 1978 - extreme in every sense 8o. The hostel housed and provided facilities for fresh army recruits, police cadets and us; long haired crazy apprentices from all over the country.

As bad a reputation as the Trentham Hostel had, it was following my one and only stay there that the place was closed to apprentices. It was later said the staff had never before witnessed such acts. Despite being warned of the carryings on there, I'd never imagined it would be anything like it was.

I've often wondered what the straw was that broke the camel's back - banning apprentices. Was it the police cadettes smoking pot, or the missing gear from the army barracks? Most likely such a decision took into account the regularly hosed out dormitories, the pie cart set on fire, or the many other pranks and senseless acts of vandalism that occurred as soon as the sun went down.

A memorable stunt involved the carrying of a pissed police cadet (after he crashed) complete with bed across the parking lot and over the hill to the army training area, where he was left on the firing range. Of course one couldn't forget the older guys' bout of blow touching tires, or the setting up of and photographing of my roommate masterbating - that was really mean :(. Then there was the adulteration of hostel food with charcoal, and the major power cuts due to the placing of coins under light bulbs which caused a short when anyone hit the switch. But what capped it for us was the treasure trove of army stuff that mysteriously turned up and sat for days in the hallway of our dorm. Guy Fawkes came early for some that year...

Wild as they were, the guys I met that first year remained good mates for years following and I'm pleased to say those I continued to keep in touch with turned out to be good law abiding citizens.

So that was my first introduction to Wellington. My following stays along the Upper Hutt line were just as eventful - and scary, but they would take pages to detail, so another time perhaps.

^Cheers phase_dancer, next time I end up that way I'll make sure I stop in.

On a side note, I think Trentham was also the place that Phar Lap was killed. To me it was just place to play golf sometimes and steal empty rounds from the shooting range.

Flight Centre are fucking terrible. They were actually made to stop using the slogan/motto "Lowest prices guaranteed" by the ACCC - because they couldn't guarantee the lowest prices (and as you've found out, they can't even match them).

I also find Webjet terrible - your best bet is to do the search yourself IMO (except, I do find the site I referenced earlier flawless).

Yep! theyve still got the factory, just before heading to wainuiomata! its just short staffed now, alot of workers were laid off a couple years ago.

LOL Ive been to weltec myself for a year, didnt need to stay in the hostels, but as for trentham, there was always those dynamite/whatever its called sticks going missing all the time. Trentham is like a minature melburn cup, and where someone would go to retire nowadays. When I have the time ill drive around and take some pics then post them here.

Having just spent 6 weeks in NZ, I finally got to try UnSquare's suggestion re soda and L&P.

A nice mix I have to say. I got through a few bottles of each as well as copious amounts of beer. Kiwi beer drinkers sure have it good as almost all brands of the fine ale are much cheaper there. Most prices are ~30-35% cheaper and that's before converting Aus to NZ currency.

L&P + Bourbon would be a nice mix I reckon.

Just have to hunt down the L&P as I haven't found any for years. Any of you guys know where I'd find it in Melbourne?

I noticed that too.

I bought a crown lager from a bar in a casino and it was about $1.50 cheaper than it was in Australia.
