Just how bad is the "Ghetto" in your city.

The ghetto in "Southpark" is quite lame actually. No graphitti, no ho stroll, NOBODY serving on corners. I can go into bars that are 'said' to bee exclusive to a specific gang etc and I never get jacked or even threatened. I dont stay for very long cause I cant stand the rap or mariachi music but yeah I like to test boundaries and there aint none here.

There is 2 or 3 areas that are very common for drive by shootings at night and on the weekends, ghetto bird choppers circling over head and endless crack traffic in the complex/project parking lots. I've lived in 2 of them and never had any problems. Seems the only people that have problems are the ones that get into other's business. I definately wouldnt want to rent an apt on the lower level of any of these places but tame in comparison to Calif border ghettos.

Living in the ghetto areas in Southpark, are practically just as expensive as it is to live in much safer areas, so at least here, they really don't have any right to bitch or complain about conditions. The only thing I can think of is that they just enjoy/like/ or are genuinely content beeing where they are at.

Never been to the east coast but some of the worst areas I've seen have been in San Diego and Los Angeles.

The prostitutes around here seem MUCH more advanced then any other place Ive been. Nearly ALL have moved off the corners and onto the internet and yellow pages. Somebody swapped the cockroaches and graphitti for bibles and phone books.

Even the poorest people I know have a computer...stands to reason, people get more value from an auction site then they do a pawn shop. Hell, is there really even a need to leave the house anymore? lol

Well I live in the suburbs of Philadelphia, and my whole area is nice, although the one town close is turning into a shithole, nothing even remotely serious though.

But then comes good old Philadelphia... It has it's good parts, and it's bad parts. I've been there at night, I've walked around at night, and had no problems, however I wasn't in the worst area either. Generally if you stick to the places you know, you'll be fine. Although I did get lost once driving around with a couple of friends, and there was burning pieces of random stuff in the road, (no offense to this up and coming sentence) random black people that I assumed were holding lol, just basically a very ghetto part of Philly I do not want to go through again. A lot of murders, shootings, etc. on the news every night, but luckily no where near it ever so... I just go to Philly for the cheesesteaks (gotta love em') and Southstreet.

VANCOUVER, BC -- MAIN AND HASTINGS...

Before I moved here I heard all the rumours about this area being the drug capital of Canada. It has become kind of a "tourist attraction" for the curious. I've driven by it a few times (both night and day) and actually took a walk (during the day) and it truly redefines the word "ghetto". Maybe it is not ghetto in the sense of gangs etc. but the streets are littered with homeless people, garbage and those little plastic baggies and blue needle covers! I dare not wear sandels as you never know when you will step on a needle! At any given time of day there are people smoking their crack pipes or shooting up. People walk around like zombies, sketched out of their minds (sometimes it is hard to tell if they have some psychological illness or if they are just on an acid trip) and on every corner there is at least one crack whore.

There is a large nice looking old building that has turned itself into a seniors community centre for mostly asians (they play chess, read, have tango lessons, etc.). A few years ago I heard the front steps to that building was a haven for dealers. The stores all have bars on the windowns and walls are covered in graffitti. No matter what businesses are there, it looks dingy and shady. Not only is it a sore sight for the eyes but it is pretty sad. The people in the area are older and obviously have serious issues in their lives -- drugs seem to be a constant escape and part of their daily lives (these are people that don't just use drugs recreationally)!

Words cannot describe just how ghetto this area is!

That area of town has literally been described as a "ghetto" in the lonely planet- the guide for backpackers and travellers. I am from Aus and stayed in that area of town as it was the cheapest on my last holiday. I have never seen so many homeless people- it was horrible and pretty scary. But it only goes for a few blocks - turn one corner and you're back in a nice clean area. Weird.

Here in Perth we dont have a huge homelessness problem or a real "ghetto" per se- there are suburbs with government housing and a high crime rate but thats not really "ghetto". I think things are a bit different here because unemployment and welfare doesnt actually run out at a certain time.

I live outside of Trenton, NJ

And while I live in the "ghetto" of my town (ok, one of them...there's two, there's the one down by the Armory that's low-income housing and tends to be more of the 'ghetto' stereotype and then there's where I live which is nearly a project, cheap housing, and almost 4000 people in one square mile of condos and townhouses) we're nothing compared to Trenton...inner city there is...damn. Pretty damn depressing.

I've seen lots of bums and some thugs in downtown Atlanta. When I used to live in Houston, there was lots of gangs and drugs. Bad weed though lol.

shit, kc, mo is just one big ghetto with a tourism center and a uni. shit, i lived in stlouis all my life, but was never quite like living a street away from troost.

We dont have ghetto's in the netherlands thank god

there is one project and some neighbourhoods are shady at night (around railway stations0 but that just comes with the drugs , druing the day you see people of all classes and colors everywhere (not that there arent rich neighbourhoods or immigrant neighbourhoods but you get my point)

Hit me up next time you come to Southstreet, I live a block off. I've lived in Philly for two years and have never had a cheesesteak. They don't seem that appealing to me but I suppose peer pressure and influences could sway me :).

There are some rough spots in Philly, north in general is bad news. Its just kind of a dirty city, I stepped on a goddamn needle on Southstreet last year, went right through my sandal. My car has been broken into twice, stole everything in it down to my tampons, gas cap, and gas. Typical shit though.

Nah, that place just looks like a ghetto. I used to do shit down there way back. It's not a place you have to worry about your safety at all, unless you were looking for trouble. It's just a part of town where a lot of drug addicts/sellers and really poor people live. It was a great place to score dope any time of the night or day, pretty much hassle free if you knew your way around. Can you Americans imagine cops walking by people shooting up or smoking rock, and the offical policy was not to arrest people for simple posesion of coke or heroin-don't even imagine bothering people about pot.
Actually I've heard that lately they started arresting people who were shooting in the alleys, but that's just cuz they wanted them to start using the safe injection site.
Me definition af a ghetto is a place where you don't feel safe. I have yet to come across such a place in Canada, nor does Jane and Finch compare to US ghettos.
Wait, I did find myself in Whitehorse, Yukon one time, in a part of town with nothing but really hostile natives. THat's the only time I ever felt unsafe in Canada.

South St. turned to trash in the last 10 years. Especially in the summer. I used to hang out there, and the rest of center city(Rittenhouse, 3 Bears, Penn's Landing, Old City, Washington Square etc.) up until a year or so ago. I used to like South St. especially when I was in HS(I'm 22 now), but now it's just gets annoying. Too many people, especially tourists, and jerkoffs yelling. You remember how it was when loud car stereos were allowed?

In the last couple years I've hanged out in North Philly. Yeah it's bad, I can't even count the number of guns I've seen, gunshots I've heard, people that I know who have serious criminal records, police helicopter spotlight's that have been on me, etc. etc. etc. Yeah I get harassed by the cops that I'm white, but I know everyone there and they'll gladly flash them their ID and say I'm with them. The only white people there are the drivers that come in to buy h, and the cops. I guess I'm lucky that everyone there knows me and I don't get fucked with cause of that. In the past few years I've never met one other white person that just "hangs out" there like me. But shit, I love it there, and not just cause of the h.

P.S. about cheesesteaks : Don't bother going to Geno's or Pat's in South Philly. Jim's is pretty good at 4th and South St.(diagonally from Starbucks, if its still there?).

I think the main reason why Canadian ghettos, which don't really exist in comparison, are not so bad is the lack of guns. The laws are much stricter for gun use.

What about all those sharp hockey skates?

I can't think of any drug dealer that I know(n) that cared about gun laws. The only ccw permit I've seen in the hood was mine. But they all have guns, and there's plenty of brass on the ground.

I lived in Philly for two years, and I'm in the process of trying to move back right now. Jim's is still there...I have to agree with you, their cheesteakes are ALOT better than either Pat's or Geno's.
Haha yeah, South Street is pretty ghetto...I've scored weed there a few times from random guys walking by. The street is definetly not what it used to be.
I love North Philly too actually. The Puerto Rican neighborhoods in the north east in particular. They're just so lively and interesting...oh, and the dope is excellent. haha. but yeah, I've definetly just hung out there from time to time...you meet all sorts of interesting characters doing that. Gotta love the convenience of those el stops.

My town is one you would expect to be harmless, but it has it's own seedy underbelly. This town was big for drugs when I was too young really to know about that stuff. There are some slummy areas, some of the landlords here aren't exactly noble people. There aren't many murders, it's front-page news if it happens.

i live in mississippi , theres alot of projects and ghettos in my city , but the worst placein my city is Redline , my brother got his ride jacked and while he was runnin they shot him in the lower back , i used to go there alot cause i knew a couple ppl that lived there....but i havent been back since my bro got shot

I live in melton sth. australia its called the hood by everyone who doesnt live there are scared to cross the tracks i live across the road from where everyone meets to sell drugs and stolen shit.

Thats a load of fucking bullshit. Melton? Collingwood flats or somewhere like Altona, Sunshine and Broadmeadows is the bad western parts not melton. Melton is just a bunch of housing estates that are around shit suburbs.

But really, Australia has shit all ghetto's in my opinion. Of course there is some places you dont wanna walk at night, quite a bit of smack dealers around the place but nothing i'd be avoiding like the plague. Handguns and semi-auto type weapons are banned here to an extent so gun related violence is very low and subsequently makes this place alot safer than somewhere else.
