Japanese Anime & Manga

I agree Vurt!

It seems that people around the world have caught onto how profitable anime and/or idea's originating from anime can be. I'm not sure if I've mentioned this before or not...and well I'm too lazy to search...

Firstly, Warner Bros. will be teaming up Blade director Stephen Norrington for a live action re-make of Akira. Um... unless this is filmed in Japan with Japanese actors then it ain't even close to Akira - I smell a botched job coming to the screens!

But wait theres more......straight from the mouths of ADV Films...

ADV FILMS ANNOUNCES LIVE-ACTION THEATRICAL VERSION OF JAPANESE ANIMATED TITLE “NEON GENESIS EVANGELION;” VISUAL EFFECTS BY “LORD OF THE RINGS” STUDIO WETA WORKSHOP LTD.

THE MOST INFLUENTIAL JAPANESE ANIMATED SERIES IN MODERN TIMES TO COME TO LIFE AS A FEATURE FILM

CANNES, FRANCE, 19 May 2003—In an announcement sure to make waves in the entertainment industry, ADV Films President and CEO John Ledford today publicly confirmed industry rumors that the firm has acquired the rights to produce, and has already begun development of, a live-action feature-film based on the Japanese animated television series “Neon Genesis Evangelion,” a multi-million dollar worldwide franchise and perhaps the most influential anime title in the history of the art form. The project is a collaboration between ADV Films, Gainax and Weta Workshop, Ltd.

but wait there is more.......

PAWTUCKET, R.I.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 11, 2003--Hasbro, Inc. (NYSE:HAS) announced today that it entered into an agreement with the highly successful producers Tom DeSanto (X-Men and X2: X-Men United) and Don Murphy (currently producing 20th Century Fox's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) for a full length, live action movie based on Hasbro's enormously popular TRANSFORMERS brand.

my head hurts..... :(

Live action Eva is going to be a hoot. How they are going to condense that series into a 2-3 hour movie package that makes sense is beyond me. With pointless Judeo-Christian mythological references!

All is well.

I came back to this wonderthread because I was inspired to write this basic statement

MagicGirl; "And you don't seem to understand..."

Thankyou Mr Haste( I was wondering ,where may I obtain (apart from dodgyland) a copy of Lain Intro Theme Tune ),

and Tarsy(good 2 CU)
Always 4 that statement you said b4 last years ECore"No matter what I wear I always look good"
Classic.
Similar to what I say; "Once 1 has come to the realisation of being a raver, whatever one wears is Ravewear"

Am also going through CardCaptors.

Nice thread.

Insane Platypus - it will be a movie based on EVA, not a direct adaptation - at least I hope not...

Oceanboy - Cardcaptors is pure evil!! Its a heavily heavily edited American dubbed version of the original Card Captor Sakura. It is missing soooooooo many episodes and the dialogue and names have been changed so much its almost a different series.

Madman started releasing the Cardcaptor DVD's but pulled the plug after Vol 6 I think due to the atrocious sales. Alas the only way to get Card Captor Sakura is to import and watch it subbed (the only way to watch anime hehe). Or you can d/l fansub copys.

Of course, if ur not an anime purest like me =D it won't matter what you watch hehe

As far as the Lain OST (Original Sound Track), apart from downloading it, you can only get via import - ie, Amazon.com. Its not released locally unfortunately :(

Hi...my name is Haste and I'm an anime junkie ;)

Also, it seems that anime is hiting the music scene aswell....

Music and International Media Giant Ministry of Sound will be attending fanimeCon to research the energetic, expanding demographic that anime and music share. They are also providing Ministry of Sound resident DJ B-Roe as the headlining act for the Conventions Saturday Night Dance Party. - Source, Anime News Network

A live action Eva movie? *boggle* Well i hope they don't fuck it up...

Not sure if this series has been mentioned before, but i've just started watching Hellsing, and I'm waiting to see the next 3 episodes. I'm only 3 episodes into it, but its pretty cool so far.

Basic outline: Hellsing is a organization devoted to the extermination of vampires. And one of their best agents, Alakard (sp?) is a vampire himself.

Oh, also saw the first Excel Saga dvd. In-fucking-sane. Its like the main character injected a gram of meth through her eyeball. I can't keep up with what she's saying half the time... funny as hell though, i recommend it

Hellsing is a cools series and I think, but don't quote me, the correct spelling is Alucard :)

Excel Saga is certainly zany, but after watching 3 eps it annoyed the shit out of me - I thought it was trying so hard to be so funny that it became annoying for me. Having said this, I know a few people who love the whole series. I must admit I love the opening theme, very catchy ^_^

not japanese but still animation, melbourne is hosting the international animation festival at ACMI.

running over 6 days from tuesday 24th to sunday 29th.

i think i might try catching as many shows as i can, especially the last day, which feature the best shows from the festival.

program details

I watched Spriggan ages ago and from memory I enjoyed it - however its not in my DVD collection, so I can't say that it impressed me all that much

It was awhile ago...hmm maybe I should re-watch it again :\

Why does Lains nice teddy bear hat get lifted off her head on the bridge by the wind and the hat stays there?

Peace
O

We've got Spriggan on DVD.. I quite liked it.. tho its a bit ordinary, the storyline isnt anything *that* special. But it is entertaining nonetheless. I just find the whole children with strange psychic powers tilt to be a bit too bizarre for me.. they freak me out.

I have Lain DVD 3 too.. and I'm *STILL* yet to watch it *looka at twigz*. I really need to sit down and watch it.

Oh and I bought Spirited Away Special Ed DVD (sif I wouldnt ;)). Now I have to sit down and take a screen capture of the bit where the soot creatures are being fed the little star lollies. I want one. They are soooo cute! :)

stace.

Hey dear Tarsy ,in regards to your reply,I appreciate it.
Yet I see a hat!

Because there is no hat...Only remember, it is not the hat which hangs in mid air, but yourself...
OK, I can handle pure philosophy plese explainemente'

Hehe umm, it was just a reference to the 'there is no spoon' line in the Matrix...

But I think it's relevant anyway... The line between the real world and the wired became quite blurred, but there's nothing to say that the real world was anymore real than the wired... So it's possible that the real world didn't truely exist in any physical sense but was just a representation of one aspect of a larger existance...

In that case the hat might not physically exist, but is just your perception of something which you interpret as a hat...

And so the hat doesn't exist, only you do.

Tarsy: lucky that didn't make any sense to me, sounds like it could have spoiled something.

Stace: We'll watch it someday i'm sure... how long have you had that dvd anyway? And when are you buying more excel saga? I want to see if the show develops a plot at some point.

Oh, i got the 2nd hellsing dvd. Its dodgy as fuck :)

I just watched Princess Mononoke last nite after not seeing it for a few years..... Miyazaki is a GOD!

Damn I wish they would release a Ghibli Box DVD Set!!! *dream on hastey* :(

Excel Saga has a plot? hehe I couldn't get past episode 3.. :p

Agreed, the animation in Spirited Away is much better than Princess Mononoke and so it shoulod be considering its a newer release - despite this, they both share that special Ghibli feel. Take nothing away from PM though, for its time its animation was breathtaking and to exacting detail - colours are not as vibrant but this could be due to its era of production, or maybe to match the dark undertones of the movie.

Spirited Away is a journey through many emotions and therefore can be more endearing to the viewer, PM is a different feature altogether. It is by far Miyazaki's deepest, darkest and most serious work - apart from a few one liners it contains no comical relief. PM is simply a serious adult film and SA is to be enjoyed by all.
