Japanese Anime & Manga

Well, i've now seen all the Hellsing DVD's i have to say i quite liked them. They weren't fantastic but overall quite good. There were some parts that just made me cringe though, but i get that with almost everything i see that involves vampires :)

Speaking of which, i just picked up and watched Vampire Hunter D. I just found out that there a couple of Vampire Hunter D movies, but i think i've got the first one. The animation looks pretty damn old. The movie was alright, but i didn't think it was terribly flash though.

So does anyone have any info on the other Vamp hunter movies? I think one coming out soon is called Bloodlust, but i'm not sure.

Hmm, the last 5 dvd's i bought have been about vampires... oh well...

Vampire....

Blood: The Last Vampire 2000
Vampire Hunter D 1985
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust 2001
Vampire Hunter the Animated Series 1997
Vampire Princess Miyu OVA 1988
Vampire Princess Miyu TV 1997

And Hellsing you've seen :)

im catching kaidohmaru on sunday as part of the melbourne international film fest at acmi =D

The battle for the Capital City of Kyo rages as warring political factions vie for power against hereditary rulers. After the murder of her parents at the hands of her seditious uncle, a young girl named Kintoki flees to the mountains to lead a harsh life; she is named Kai Doh Maru by the local villagers. Rescued by Raiko, the Captain of "The Four Knights"-honorable defenders who protect the peace of the city, she is raised within their group as a boy. Living among the Knights, she learns the practices of martial arts and develops into a skillful samurai, becoming a permanent member of the team. Now, as a young woman of seventeen, she begins to discover new feelings of passion and love for Raiko...but she also discovers that these new emotions cause a storm of jealousy and rage in another woman linked to her past. Set in feudal Japan's Heian Era (794 to 1185 AD), the animation team created a unique color scheme reminiscent of Japanese artwork from the period focusing on the seasons, virtues, and elements of the Earth as they related to spirits of nature. Kai Doh Maru mysteriously opens in stark black & white, then resolves into a breathtaking and skillfully produced watercolor palate of luminous and soft pastel imagery. As the drama unfolds, deep, full colorization is used to highlight key scenes. If you play close attention, you can witness seasonal transformation of plants and trees as well as see how the film changes in appearance as time progresses through the tonality of the colors. Detailed 3D modeling of temples, gardens and landscapes take the viewer into another world, back in time, a distant past world of lavish luxury, political intrigue and bloody conflict. "The artistic look and feel of this film separates it from all other anime productions. Its unique creative approach takes anime into a whole new dimension that we know fans of Japanese animation and art films will certainly appreciate," says Marvin Gleicher, Manga CEO.

Grave of the Fireflies - you will not see an anime as powerful, moving and emmotional as this. It is without a doubt the best anime I've ever seen, nothing has moved me like it has.

Grave of the Fireflies info page

I encourage everyone, whether they like anime or not, to watch it!! Hopefully Madman will have it released soon, I'll keep ya's posted.

I'll shut up now ;)

Oh and to show you how much of a death grip BUENA VISTA/DISNEY have on Ghibli releases. Take a look at these, take note of the dates they were classified...

Princess Mononoke

Kiki's Delivery Service

My Neighbour Totoro

They've had these titles classified so long ago and still show no sign of ever releasing them. Madman were lucky to secure the liscence for Spirited Away as Disney wasn't quick enough to get their greasy mits on it. As for Grave, I don't think they see it as a possible threat to any of their own animated features.

Disney's supposed to be a land of fun,
where may there be apparent past corruption in distrib.dep.,
Disney's rides and basic ethos is about Super joy and wonder.Where is the disparity occurring from?

I read synopsis of Fireflies and there be tears upon my face.
May my heart really shine extra now.

there is a link to kaidohmaru review on the same page of this thread :p

whoops thanks, I must have missed it cause you had the title as one word, thats my excuse and I'm sticking to it. 8)

I heard that Gundam Seed got liscenced by Bandai recently...there only 7 episodes to go before it would have all been fansubbed...doh!

Kai Doh Maru is abit of a dark horse for Madman - they didn't even list it as an upcoming release so I was suprised to hear it be released myself.

I've yet to watch this myself, I have it on fansub so I'll give my analysis as soon as I get around to it. The reason I haven't rushed to watch it is probably due to the bad reviews this has received among the anime comminuty.

It's been produced by Production IG (GiTS and Blood the last Vampire) and apparently suffers from alot of the fault that made Blood the waste it was. Kai Doh Maru is apparently a comlex story that would have been better hadled in a multiple OVA release instead of just one.

Here are some reviews...

Anime Academy

DVD Angle

Its been a non event among the anime community and this is usually best told by the amount of groups willing to sub it - none of the main groups touched it. Only one smaller group took the time to sub it.

Again, I've yet to see it so I won't judge it until then :)

As for Gundam - I'll answer that later, must go to work now 8o
