Japanese Anime & Manga

rented Guyver and Patablor, viewing in the next few days...
:D

Calling all bluelight anime fans - well actually its Melbourne specific (you can't hold me too blame if you don't live in the right city ;) ) An idea has been suggested to me by Vurt and I think it's really good - so opnions and expressions of interest please!
How many of you would be interested in a Bluelight anime screening session? - and hopefully an ongoing one. If we pull our rescources together this can really work - I have enough titles to keep us busy, and it gets added to monthly :D
I haven't fully worked out the whole logistics to it ie, venue etc etc - but suggestions are welcome.

mmm... i'll think about it if the first screening is M.S. Nadesico!

Haste, do you know anything about the SE version of Transformers the Movie? I spent months trying to track down a copy from the US so now I'll be upset if I have to buy another copy!

I'm going to start a new thread and I'll answer your question there.
If any mods are around, you can close this thread - thanks :)
New thread here

just finished watching the first episode of hack/sign (thanx to haste!), interesting premise which reflects today's computer gaming culture.
animation looks quite simple (might be the quality of the video or just to reflect the storyline) but in quite a lush, painterly style.
im not sure how old hack/sigh is, but from first impressions, it seems to parrallel the basic storyline in tad williams - otherland series... granted i havent finished reading otherland either :D
but definitely interesting to see how the story developes (knowing these damn japanese! ;) ) and what issues it explores.

What took you so long? ;)
Be warned though, .hack is a dialogue intensive anime and low on action - people often critise it for being boring and slow, but they don't understand what it's about. It's an anime about the people playing the RPG game, not an anime about the RPG game - the world of the game plays a big part, but it's about people - their fears, emotions, expectations and lives. I love trying to figure out the real people behind the characters, and I think this is something we all do - we see a name on bluelight for instance, and try a construct a perception of what and who that person is.
.hack can be a very thought provoking anime if you allow it to be. It's another Lain - the thinking person's anime :) Go beyond the typical anime thinking mentality and I guarantee you'll enjoy it!
oh and Vurt, if you like the background animation then you'll love Noir - the attention to detail in the French landscape is sensational, and again done in a water colour effect. Also the same person who did the soundtrack to hack also did Noir, although not as good IMO.

hey yall
i watched Patlabor halfheartedly yesterday. was abit distracted because of visitors in the house talking. i'll watch it again later tonight...
but the first impression was that its alot of talking and narrating of the story instead of letting things unfold via actions and reactions. not sure if this is good story-telling because patlabor is action-based in the sense that its about the mobile police force and the robots known as labors. in the case of lain and .hack//sign, im sure this structure is essential but perhaps patlabor could have used a different format.
of course, we also have to consider the fact that it was made in 1989? ;)
and maybe because ive been spoilt with NGE?

I've yet to see it myself, but I understand what you're saying.
There are a few series/movies that have disapointed people due to expectations based on genre. One that comes to mind is Gasaraki - its a mecha based anime that is dialogue heavy and therefore slow paced - it's attraction is its deep political intrigue. Going into this series with the expectation of the mecha genre will disapoint. I personally love Gasaraki, but I know many that don't. If Patlabor is in this mould then I understand.
At the end of the day I guess it can also be the simple fact of poor writing? I really need to see this to have a full understanding.
I've heard good things about Patlabor so I'm a little suprised - do you know if its based off a manga? hmmm this needs further delving hehe.
Maybe you have been spoilt by NGE ;)

patlabor always struck me as an intrigue based anime (political or otherwise), despite the cool mecha designs :D

i used to watch jap toons heaps a few years back. my favorite ones were always the action packed type. just because western cartoons didnt pack enough punch.
favorites would be ninja scroll, cyber city, macross etc..
fist of the north star was sweet too, they did a movie based on it and it was quite lame however :(
whats that other one, urutsokidoji or something i cant really remember. now thats an interesting piece of work...
gona go read the first part of this thread

haha, yeah that was the name of it.
i dont think it gives jap anime a bad name. its all entertainment really...
