oh shit, heres another post.
really like space adventure cobra as well, simply because the soundtrack is by yello, gives it a real timeless feel. also cus cobra is such a cool dood. totally agree about the thing in the first thread about getting into the chracters.

i think im usually quite patient watching slow-moving films no matter which genre, and i watched Patlabor without reading the blurb on the cover carefully (and so didnt really have expectations that it was gonna be mecha)... i guess i didnt have a problem with the lack of robots-kicking-ass, it was just the overall arrangement of the scenes. i thought the script could have been better written in the sense that there didnt need to be big chunks of narration via dialogues (especially monologues). there might be better ways of presenting the same information, broken up into bits or by simple non-mecha/fighting events.
mmm... and one more thing which just struck me - i think the characters could have been fleshed out more.

Ok, I borrowed a fansub of Patlabor last nite and gave it a watch - let me just say that being a fansub I kept in mind that the translation might not be up to scratch.
The movie starts off promising but it quickly falls into a slow paced lull. I went into this movie not expecting much action at all and the movie delivered even less than my expectations. It's not until the end that you get any sort of action, and even that was tame. So off the bat, this is not an action anime!
How does the story hold up? Well there's a story there and the movie has a look at man's dependence on machines, their upside and their downside. I think this movie suffers from poor writing - the concept is there, but the execution is not. It's very boring for a movie - with a series you have the luxury of time, with a movie you don't. There a parts in the middle of the movie that I felt could have been left out and had no bearing on the end result.
I don't think you're an overly picky bitch Ghost ;) , I wasn't too impressed with it either - and I'm a huge fan of dialogue heavy anime. It's downfall isn't the lack of action, but for me it's the lack of engaging story.
Did you watch a fansub of this or a legit copy? I wouldn't mind seeing a proper translation.
 
My housemate just hired Ninja ressurection. I just groaned and repeated: Ninja Scroll, good, Ninja Ressurection, bad! Haven't seen any good anime for yonks, prolly since Spriggan, the last two i watched were piss poor- X and sum shiesty bollocks about vampires. I mean i'm just as forgiving and prone to suspension of disbelief as the next guy but those last two just blew dingleberries! I think i'm definately into oldskool shite- Akira, Wicked City (good ol demon pussy and who can forget spider pussy) Fist of the North Star and cyber-city OEDO 808! Suggestions on new viewing material?
 
The problem with X the movie is that it's not a stand alone movie - it's a continuation of the manga - therefore alot of people don't understand it and therefore hate it based on their misunderstanding. I dare hazard to guess you are in this catergory - unless you've read the manga? Anyway the produces assumed that viewers would've already read the manga and in Japan they would have - it's Westerners that have the problem. X the manga and movie were a success in Japan and lead to the production of a TV series - which I hear is very very good (I'm not sure if its an adaptation of the manga or a continuation of the movie).
You thought Wicked City was good? *cringes* ;)
As for suggestions, some of my favs at the momment are..
Excel Saga, Azamanga Daioh, RahXephon, Witch Hunter Robin, Scryed, .hack//SIGN, Noir, GitS Stand Alone Complex, Trigun, Spirited Away, Cowboy Bebob, Berserk... shit the list is endless. It all depends on what you're into??

hastey, i watched a proper one from the video store... we borrowed 10 videos for 8bux from a store in smith street. :) one more anime is Guyver, not watched yet. videos are due for return tomorrow, so i guess i'll watch it tonight.
going by Tabernacle's post, im guessing he didnt read the first thread. ;) how about Legend of the Overfiend (Orutsokidoji)?
 
I would have thought anyone who had watched Wicked City would have seen Legend of the Overfiend (Orutsokidoji) - dont they go hand in hand? ;)

I've heard about Guyver but yet to see it - I look forward to hearing what you think.

guyver was a manga and anime, i dont think there was a feature length version of the anime.

Has anyone seen the second of the Armitage III films around (Dual Matrix for memory)?
 
I own Dual Matrix and it rocks - one of my favs :) I wasn't all too impressed with Polymatrix.
Well I'm still up for the anime screening, but venue is a problem - my living room isn't really set up for more people than two - hmmmm maybe thats why no-one visits me hehe.

After reading this thread I went out and used two chrissy gift vouchers to get Lain 1 & 2. Plan to watch them this weekend, but now I have a question!
Is it really difficult to follow? Coz I'm thinking after a long week of work, may not have the patience on Friday? Might leave it 'till Saturday or Sunday ;P

Having said this, Lain is a series that comes together after watching it all - trust me, you'll be confused after watching the first two volumes, but don't let this discourage you.
Also, the series has also been written in a way that allows the viewer to develop their own theories for alot of things. Not all answers are provided. Your perception of Lain might not be mine, but neither of us are really wrong. This is the beauty of Lain and why I call it a thinking persons anime - you really have to pay attention to the images amd dialogue!
So maybe rest your brain first and then tackle it ;)
 
Haste-Dont want to burn me a copy of grave of the fireflies by any chance.? Been meaning to check that movie out for years but always a bitch to find.
Or just let me know where you downloaded it. Do you normally get your fansubs from irc anime channels or file sharing progs?

Daq - my copy of Grave... is a Region 1 DVD :) So unless you have a DVD burner (for back up pruposes ;) ) and a player that plays region 1's I can't help you with my copy.
I get all my digisubs using Direct Connect - there are couple of anime hubs that serve my needs ;)
But let me tell you - Grave of the Fireflies is not something you want to see as a poorly translated fansub. And whatever you do - DONT watch the dub *cringes*
 
ooo..I'm up for an anime screening session!!!
I have access to a projector which takes VGA output so if we have a blank wall, we could hook the projector to a PC and go from there...as for space...I have a whole empty apartment we can use (long story) but there's no furniture :( or fridge (neccessary for beer) :(
I also volunteer my apartment (where I live) for a DVD screening if needed - enuff room for about 10 ppl (a bit of a squeeze on the couch though). My multiregion DVD player is a bit iffy picture quality wise but passable if another cna't be found..
