Japanese Anime & Manga

Spirited Away news - for those that are not aware, the video/DVD release of this film in Japan was dogged by a red tint in the film that left alot of fans pissed off - understandbly too.

Well the red tint problem has apparently been fixed on the Region 1 release of Spirited Away - there is a preview of it on my Vol 13 Kenshin DVD and it looks like it should, Ghibli perfection. Statements have also been released by Studio Ghibli and Disney that this problem has been rectified. We get Region 1 transfers for our discs, so its safe to assume that our release will not have the red tint either.

A must for DVD collections!

I'm not a big fan of the Kenshin OVA's, especially after reading the manga - too dark for my liking and not true to the original manga. The TV series followed the manga fairly closely - with the exception of the the thrid arc (Jinchuu) that was never animated.

Good to see Grave of the Fireflies in your list :)
 
I disagree with you (Haste) It's a tragedy like Shakespere, it has to be dark. But in fact it's for the better imho. Notice why he never wants to kill again after the revolution is over. It's a man who overcomes his struggles not gets bogged down. A+ for the Kenshin OVAs from me man!

project IG and gainax are ivolved with FLCL's production, any comments (haste?)?
 
ilbumy - I read the manga before seeing any of the animated series/OVA - in my opnion, the TV series (Tokyo and Kyoto arcs) is more true to the manga the first OVA's. The OVA's share none of the art style or comedy that the manga does. But its cool that you like the OVA's :)

Really, if I was to pick the better - I'd put the manga first - it blows them all away. GET THE MANGA ;)

FLCL - pronounced Furi Kuri - is one weird anime!! Its six episodes and its something you need to watch more than once to get the story line - I'm still confused lol. If you enjoyed Excel Saga (which I didn't), you'll enjoy this - although not as zany. Apparently there are some serious undertones to it, though I didn't get them. I must watch again.

Animation is top notch, as you would expect from the GAINAX crew. The soundtrack is also very very good - both music and voice acting. I suggest you get your hands on the fansubs before buying any of DVD's - this is one those that you either love or hate!
 
haste - is spirited away available on DVD now? I sense an Anime fest 2 soon...a new couch which is more comfortable is on the way!!!
 
Its tentaviely scheduled for a June release here in Australia - thats all I know at this stage.

I'm up for another animefest :)
 
Any one c metropolis? it was a remake by Osamu Tezuka (u know the guy who did Astro Boy)of one of the first sci fi movies done in Germany, i find i tend to like this kind anime were the animator creates his own world, some of these Japanese animators go pretty deep and just use there animation as a total creative outlet with no intention of appealing to the mainstream audience. In some aspects this is pretty self indulgent but the results can leave you with a great story and some amazing visual scenes, even if you can't understand the message its an experience in its self. Wings of Homenese and Akira would have to be some of my favorite anime’s and also tank police, cause its just plain crazy!
 
If you can, try and read the manga to Akira - I've always believed that Akira should have been a 6 part OVA instead of one movie - so many holes....

but nonetheless, a classic anime movie!
 
There is a GiTS series, and as Vurt has already mentioned its called Stand Alone Complex - it consists of 26 episodes :)

There is also another GiTS feature film in the making..
 
Stand Alone Complex is a pretty sweet series. I've seen 6 episodes so far.

Personally, so far, I still think Cowboy Bebop is the best sci-fi series but Ghost in the Shell stand alone complex has some neat stuff to it. The animation looks like it's done in vector graphics (basically computer art). The new characters are cool, they added a couple guys who work with *forgot her name. The major, main character, the chick* it also has that non-cyborg dude from the movie and her partner with the funky eyeimplants. Anyhow the series gots a lot of sweet gizmos and they go really technical when they talk about stuff which is either good or bad depending on who you are. Overall I'm enjoying it a lot and I can't wait for it to come to America.

Anyone got any info on Macross Zero? I loved Macross Plus...

This is one thing that I'd like to do.. just have to find the odd $350 to fund it. 8)

I've seen a few episodes of Stand Alone Complex and I found it to be really good. Its nicely lacking in the complex psychobabble a lot of anime is well known for :)

Macross Plus was great! Pity there were only 4 episodes to it.. I was really enjoying the flow of it.

Now, does anyone have a copy of My Neighbour Totoro?? Coz Oli and I are dying to see it! We're currently waiting for the Studio Ghibli Collection to be released in Aus (Haste, any info on a date? :)), but its taking too damn long! :p After finding a pile of soft toys of the characters in that movie I really wanna see it. I fell in love with the soot creatures in Spirited Away. :)

stacyrox - as far as I know, there are no plans of yet to release the Ghibli collection here in Australia at this stage. I would imagine that the problem would be Disney Studios - they own all rights to distribute Studio Ghibli films outside of Japan.

So, either Disney release it here in Australia, or Madman acquire the rights from Disney to distribute it here in Australia. Its not an impossible task though - Madman were the major driving force behind Spirited Away's theatrical release in Australia - they also have the rights to its DVD release here in Australia. So, its possible, I just don't see it happening any time soon :(

Disney can be a real stick in the mud when it comes to animation other than their own. Initially Disney copped alot of flack for its lack of support of Spirited Away with its theatrical release. At the same time it was up against Disney's own Treasure Island and some other thing I can't remember. The interesting thing now is, that since Spirited Away won the Oscar for best animated film, Disney has changed its attitude towards it. Disney plan to re-release Sprited Away through cinema's across the States as a major feature. Must be a good film now that it has potential of being a cash cow and elavating Disney's image. :X

I have My Neighbour Totoro as a fansub.

hehe not yet, its still airing on Japanese TV ;) Fansubs is the only way to see it atm.
