i can't remember the percentage, but it was something like 1/4 of our prison population is inhabited with non violent drug offenders. Some real murderers there, eh?

my friends dad is getting out in 5 years. He got a 10 year sentences because of a DUI, a third heroin posession charge, and because he was poor and mexican.

Sweeping generalizations sure make you look like an asshole eh?

I think people forget that people in jail are humans too...kinda like they do the same with homeless people.....they turn their head, they look down at them, they prefer to brush them aside and act like they aint there, they behind bars, the same as injured army veterans, the blind, the deaf...its like a parrallel world to many people. the same way people are isolated from shit that dont happen in their communities sometimes....

But when it hits close to home with your friends going away to state, or even just your homies in county lockup for a unpaid fine for 30 days, shits real. people like to talk shit and no doubt theres some shitty people in prison but they forget there is a flip side to every story...you never know someones story or how they got where they are at you know?
 
I never want to go to jail. It would suck. That's why I won't ever commit a felony.

I have to agree with version. There is a difference between hardened criminals and petty criminals.

Lacey, I agree with your post and examples, there are some pretty lame reasons people get thrown in jail (drunk looking out for everyone sleeping in his turned-off car shouldn't go to jail).

But someone who commits a felony, such as murder or rape or armed robbery, I do consider less worthy than a normal human being. If you want to play God and take someones life or rape someone or deliberatly hurt someone, I think you are a piece of shit. I don't pity you. I smile when I hear you are gonna pay for what you did. You deserve it; hell in my opinion jail is getting off easy for raping another person.

You change someone's life forever when you commit a crime such as that.

I've always believed in an "eye for an eye" rule.

Example: If someone commits murder by slitting someones throat, then they should have their throat slit. How is that not fair?

Your username implies that you have, in fact, commited a felony and probably continue to do so.
 
When it comes down to it, you KNOW the consequenses of a crime if you get caught, you have no one to blame but your own stupid self. As for your friends dad, why didn't he learn the first 2 times that heroin will get him in trouble?

It doesn't mean he's a dickhead, he could be a really nice guy for all I know, but he still fucked up. His fault, not the police or jails or anyone else.

That is, if we take the state as just by assumption. When society is as unjust as it is, this sort of attitude can lead only to the reproduction of that injustice.

What is the justification for retribution? I ask and ask, but have yet found no justification.

We have to look at the social conditions that have led to the rise of incarceration and increasing ghettoization.

1. Trends in incarcaration have not correlated with trends in crime. Nor have racial trends in incarceration correlated with racial trends in crime. If this were the case, we would expect the majority of inmates to be white and would also expect rates of incarceration to be falling.

So what factors are pertinent?

2. During the mid twentieth century, low income inner city areas were centers of manufacturing. Leading up to today, there has been white flight from the inner city to the suburbs (made possible by racist real estate policies) along with the demise of these manufacturing jobs (some manufacting jobs actually moved to the suburbs along with the shift towards the tech industry while others have moved overseas).

The most plausible hypothesis, I think (and this is based on Loic Waquant's work), is that the contemporary ghetto and prison system is a means of social control for surplus labor. The lack of economic opportunity in the ghetto leads to crime as a matter of survival while cycles incarcertion ensure a lack of mobility out of the ghetto (try applying for a job with a felony conviction under your belt. Hell, try applying for a job while black. It's possible, but there are severe statistical trends working against you).

The funny thing is, this solution is completely irrational...it benefits no one. The capitalist elite would be elated if everyone in the ghettos were to disappear. Why does the process continue? I think that individual and cultural misattributions of crime in the ghetto (that is, racism) obscure the socio-structural causes of the problem, making the system of incarceration seem necessary.

In sum, the inmates are only subhuman because society has made them so.

Notice that I didn't blame any individuals for the problem. Rather, I gave an explanation in terms of social structure. This means that there is no conspiracy of domination, but rather that the problem of crime in the ghetto and racist incarcertation is emergent from the present system.

I am actually pro-Death Sentence.

Why? Because I would personally like to have the choice between being excecuted or going to jail, because I would definitely choose excecution.

Jail is one of the most disgusting creations that us pittiful humans managed to muster up. It fails in everything. I would choose a public whipping over even 3 days in jail.

You see NO correlation between heavier sentences and being a minority? None at all? You dont believe that people who are black and latino and poor are continually targeted more for arrest and given harsher punsihments for the same crimes that whites do?

read the fuckin news and youll see whats really goin on.

i know ya got banned ( i wonder why) but ima respon anyways.

Where did i say it was solely because of his race? obviously the other shit was the main reason, but to deny race doesn't play a factor in sentencing disparities among minorities vs. white is downright ignorant. sorry the truth is offensive bud, its def. not from the PC world your perspective seems to be comin from.
